Coop vs Migros: Why Coop is Winning (Even Though Migros is Cheaper)

Migros is on average 3–5% cheaper on basic products. Yet Coop is growing, gaining market share and closing the revenue gap. What's going on — and what does it mean for your shopping?

Coop vs Migros Price Comparison – Cover

There is a paradox in Swiss retail that has become impossible to ignore in 2025–2026.

Migros is cheaper. That's what K-Tipp tests say, what bonus.ch data shows, and what RTS comparisons confirm. On basic products, M-Budget beats Coop's Prix Garantie by 3–5%. Migros invested a staggering CHF 500 million in price cuts in 2025 — the biggest move in its 100-year history.

And yet, Coop is winning.

According to the Nielsen Retail Monitor, Coop has reached a 43% market share in food and near-food, while Migros sits at 37.4%. In supermarket revenues, the gap has narrowed to just a few hundred million (CHF 12.4 billion Coop vs CHF 12.7 billion Migros in 2025). And Migros CEO Mario Irminger told NZZ in March 2026: "Whether Coop overtakes us is completely irrelevant."

How is this possible? Why are Swiss consumers choosing the more expensive supermarket? The answer: the base price is not everything. And that's exactly what this article explains.

Where Coop Beats Migros

Meat: Prix Garantie wins clearly

If there's one category where Coop has a clear and measurable advantage, it's budget meat. Prix Garantie cut meat prices by up to 27% in 2025. Chicken breast Prix Garantie costs CHF 11.50 per kilo — the lowest price of any Swiss supermarket, cheaper even than Aldi and Lidl.

According to Nielsen, Coop has gained significant market share in meat and fish, while Migros lost 1.1%. For a family that buys meat regularly, this difference alone can add up to CHF 30–50 per month.

Weekly Promotions: The most aggressive in Switzerland

Coop doesn't compete with Migros on base price. Coop competes on promotions. And it does so with full force. Real examples:

  • Ariel detergent 80 washes: CHF 25.90 instead of CHF 51.80 (50% off)
  • Cheese: weeks with 30–40% off entire categories
  • Coffee: 30–40% off Nespresso, Chicco d'Oro, Lavazza

In March 2026, Coop permanently cut over 100 branded products by up to 17%. Since early 2026, over 500 products have become cheaper. Anyone who systematically uses these promotions easily offsets Migros's 3–5% base price advantage.

Online Shopping: coop.ch wins clearly

K-Tipp found that Migros Online is around 20% more expensive than coop.ch for a basket of 40 products. In 2025, coop.ch overtook Migros Online as the largest online supermarket in Switzerland (CHF 375M vs CHF 365M). Anyone shopping online is clearly better off with Coop.

Alcohol: Everything under one roof

Coop sells wine, beer, prosecco and spirits directly in the store. Migros does not. Anyone who regularly buys alcohol saves an extra trip to Denner by shopping at Coop.

Organic: Naturaplan is the broadest range

Coop has the most comprehensive organic range in Swiss retail with Naturaplan. The selection is larger than Migros, and Coop is also growing in this category.

Store Network: The densest in Switzerland

Coop has around 965 supermarkets (target: 1,000 in 2026), Migros around 790. The Coop Pronto format recorded a 16% revenue increase in 2024. In many residential areas, Coop is simply the nearest shop.

Where Migros Stays Ahead

Basic products with M-Budget. On everyday products, M-Budget is on average 3–5% cheaper than Prix Garantie. Anyone making a purely price-driven basic shop and ignoring promotions does better at Migros.

Cumulus. Over 2 million members — the personalised vouchers can be worth it.

Fresh produce. Despite Coop's catch-up, Migros has a traditional quality advantage in fruit and vegetables. The 2025 low-price programme made fruit and vegetables on average 3.6% cheaper.

How Coop Caught Up

While Migros got distracted with expensive acquisitions (Hotelplan, Mibelle, SportX, Melectronics, Do it + Garden, Tegut in Germany), Coop focused on its core business. Coop centralised its organisation 25 years ago, invested in the Pronto format, expanded coop.ch and pushed hard on promotions.

The result: in the Nielsen Retail Monitor 2025, Coop is growing in almost all food categories, while Migros is losing in almost all.

So, Coop or Migros?

Choose Coop if you use the weekly promotions, shop online, need alcohol, care about organic, or Coop is simply your nearest store.

Choose Migros if you mainly buy M-Budget, make heavy use of Cumulus, or always shop at the same store without checking promotions.

The best strategy? Buy basics at whichever store is closest. Buy stock only on promotion — sometimes Coop, sometimes Migros, depending on who has the better deal that week.

Why is Coop growing even though it's more expensive?

Who is better for online shopping?
