Grocery Shopping in Basel: The Practical Guide

Switzerland's cross-border shopping capital: Tram 8 to Germany in 15 min. But also the Stadtmarkt (open 6 days!), the Markthalle (open Sundays!) and Basel SBB (365 days). The honest guide.

Grocery Shopping in Basel: The Practical Guide

Basel is a city of borders. Swiss-German border (Weil am Rhein, reachable by Tram 8 in 15 minutes). Swiss-French border (Saint-Louis, 10 minutes by car). Three countries, three currencies, three price levels. And Basel residents know it: 65% of customers at the Marktkauf in the Rhein Center in Weil am Rhein are Swiss.

But since January 2025 the duty-free allowance was halved to CHF 150. And price cuts from Migros and Lidl have narrowed the gap on basic products. In 2026, the question is no longer "is Germany worth it?" but "what's worth buying there and what's better bought here?"

Cross-border shopping: the definitive Basel guide

Destination 1: Weil am Rhein / Friedlingen (Tram 8, 15 min)

This is THE destination. Tram 8 from Basel goes directly to Friedlingen (terminus), where the Rhein Center and the new Dreiländergalerie are located.

StoreWhereComment for shoppers
Marktkauf (Rhein Center)Friedlingen, Tram 8 terminusHuge hypermarket. Basel residents' favourite. 65% Swiss customers. German meat at 1/3 of Swiss price. International cheese counter. Large free car park. Saturday is chaos: go early morning or mid-week.
DM Drugstore (Rhein Center)FriedlingenTHE reason for the trip for many. Cosmetics, nappies, detergent, vitamins, personal care: 40-60% cheaper than in Switzerland. Nothing comparable exists in Switzerland.
Aldi SüdFriedlingen, near Rhein CenterBasics and meat at German prices. Smaller than Marktkauf but faster.
LidlFriedlingenLike Aldi with a better bakery. Great fruit and veg prices.
Dreiländergalerie (new!)Tram 8 terminusNew shopping centre, opened 2022. More modern than the Rhein Center. Growing.

The Basel calculation: Tram 8 = approx. CHF 3-4 (TNW zone 10+13). 15 minutes from the centre. No car needed. Even a small purchase of CHF 100 (~CHF 30 savings) is net positive. Basel is the only Swiss city where cross-border shopping pays off even for small amounts.

Destination 2: Lörrach (S-Bahn S6, 20 min)

StoreComment for shoppers
Edeka / ReweFull-range supermarkets. Good butcher counter. Quieter than Friedlingen on Saturdays.
Aldi / LidlBoth present. Less crowded than Friedlingen.
DM / RossmannBoth drugstore chains on site.
Hieber (new, station area)German premium supermarket. High quality, fair prices by German standards.
Lörrach weekly marketThe most beautiful market in the region. Tue/Thu/Sat at Neuer Marktplatz. Under chestnut trees. Regional produce from the Markgräflerland.

The Lörrach trick: Saturday morning: weekly market + DM + Edeka = everything in one morning. Less chaotic than Weil am Rhein. Reachable by S6 from Basel SBB in 20 minutes.

Destination 3: Saint-Louis (France, 10 min car / Tram 3)

StoreComment for shoppers
LeclercFrench hypermarket. Excellent for French wine (30-50% cheaper than in Switzerland), French cheese, cosmetics. Less good for meat (French prices higher than German).
CarrefourAlternative to Leclerc. Wider international range.
PharmacieFrench pharmacies sell cosmetics (Avène, La Roche-Posay, Bioderma) at much lower prices than in Switzerland.

For wine: France beats Germany. A bottle of Bordeaux or Côtes du Rhône that costs CHF 15-20 in Switzerland can be found for EUR 5-8 in Saint-Louis.
