Grocery Shopping in Lucerne: the practical guide

Lucerne has the oldest shopping centre in Switzerland (Schönbühl with Migros+Coop+Aldi+Denner), the Mall of Switzerland in Ebikon (the largest in Central Switzerland), a market in one of the most beautiful squares in Switzerland, and a fish market on Fridays. The border? Forget it. Here, you optimise within Switzerland.

Grocery Shopping in Lucerne: the practical guide

Lucerne is in the heart of Switzerland. No nearby borders, no practical cross-border shopping. The question here is simple: where do I get the best value among Swiss supermarkets?

The good news is that Lucerne has an excellent offer. Schönbühl Center (the oldest in Switzerland!) has Migros, Coop, Denner and Aldi under one roof. The Mall of Switzerland in Ebikon is the biggest shopping centre in Central Switzerland with 65,000 m². Emmen Center has 80+ shops. And the market at Rathausquai, with its Friday fish market under the medieval arcades, is a unique experience.

The Lozärner Wuchemarit (the most picturesque market in Switzerland)

Lucerne's weekly market takes place in one of the most beautiful settings in all of Switzerland: Rathausquai, Unter der Egg and Jesuitenplatz, along the Reuss, with views of Chapel Bridge and the mountains.

TypeDaysHoursWhereCharacter
Weekly marketTue, Sat07:00–12:00Rathausquai, Unter der Egg, JesuitenplatzFruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, fresh pasta, eggs, bread, fish, meat, cheese, dairy products, Mediterranean specialties, flowers. Regional produce from small producers.
Fish marketFriday08:00–12:00Unter der EggUnique in Lucerne. Fresh fish under medieval arcades. A local institution.
Helvetiaplatz marketSaturday07:00–12:00HelvetiaplatzAlternative neighbourhood market, more relaxed.

Note: Because of the Bahnhofstrasse renovation (Oct 2024 – Dec 2026), there is no additional space for new stalls. The current market remains unchanged, but the available space is tighter.

Tip: The Friday fish market under the arcades of Unter der Egg is something no other Swiss city has. Fish from Lake Lucerne, prepared by vendors who have been there for generations.

Lucerne's 5 shopping hubs

1. Schönbühl Center ★☆☆☆☆ (the oldest and most complete)

Supermarkets: Migros, Coop, Denner, Aldi. All 4!
Why it is special: The oldest shopping centre in Switzerland (open since the 1960s). 20 shops across 6,700 m². All 4 main supermarkets under one roof. Langensandstrasse 23, 6005 Luzern.
Parking: Available.
How to get there: Bus from the station. On foot from the centre (~15 min).
Tip: Like Shoppyland for Bern, this is THE place to compare Migros vs Coop vs Aldi vs Denner in 10 minutes.

2. Mall of Switzerland ★☆☆☆☆ (the largest in Central Switzerland)

Supermarkets: Manor Food (large)
Why it is special: 65,000 m², 100+ shops, IMAX cinema, indoor surf (!), fitness/wellness. The biggest shopping centre in Central Switzerland, opened in 2017.
Parking: Large, open 24h.
How to get there: Bus 1/23/111 (stop "Fildern"). S-Bahn S1 from Lucerne (stop "Buchrain", <10 min). By car: A14, Buchrain exit.
Hours: Mon–Wed 9:00–18:30, Thu–Fri 9:00–21:00, Sat 8:00–16:00.
Minus: Only Manor Food for groceries (not Migros/Coop). In Ebikon, not in central Lucerne.

3. Emmen Center (Emmen)

Supermarkets: Migros, Coop, and others
Why it is special: 80+ shops, 41,500 m². The second biggest shopping centre in Central Switzerland. Open since 1975.
How to get there: Emmen, on the border with Lucerne. Bus from the city.
Parking: Large.

4. Pilatusmarkt (Kriens)

Supermarkets: Migros (large), Coop, Denner
Why it is special: 21,500 m², 1,320 covered parking spaces. Open since 2006. In Kriens, just outside Lucerne.

5. Bahnhof Luzern

Supermarkets: Migros (basement level), Coop Pronto
Why it is special: Main station. Migros and Coop Pronto are also open on Sundays (railway regulation). The basement Migros is larger than a typical station store.
Minus: Crowded. Coop Pronto is small and 10–20% more expensive.
Note: The Migros Daily on Zentralstrasse has been temporarily closed.

Neighbourhood by neighbourhood

Altstadt (Old Town): The Rathausquai/Jesuitenplatz market (Tue/Sat 7–12) is the centre of market life. Migros Schweizerhof in the centre. Coop in the centre. Denner in several locations. Globus for gourmet shopping.

Neustadt / Bahnhof: Migros in the station (basement level). Coop Pronto. The main shopping zone for commuters. Note: Bahnhofstrasse works until Dec 2026.

Schönbühl / Tribschen (south-west): Schönbühl Center with Migros+Coop+Aldi+Denner. For anyone living in the south-west, this is the definitive hub.

Littau / Reussbühl (west): Residential area. Neighbourhood Migros and Coop. Fewer options, but normal prices.

Emmen / Emmenbrücke (north): Emmen Center (80+ shops). Multicultural area with ethnic grocery stores (Turkish, Balkan, Eritrean, Tamil) offering low prices on spices, pulses and rice. The most diverse district in the region.

Ebikon / Buchrain (south-east): Mall of Switzerland. For anyone with a car or using the S1, it is the place for complete shopping – but not for everyday groceries.

Kriens (south): Pilatusmarkt with Migros, Coop, Denner. 1,320 parking spaces. At the foot of Mount Pilatus.

Cross-border shopping from Lucerne: forget it

Lucerne is in the heart of Switzerland. The nearest border is more than 1 hour away by car.

DestinationDistanceTimeTravel cost (TCS)
Jestetten / Lottstetten (DE)~120 km1h20~CHF 180 return
Waldshut-Tiengen (DE)~100 km1h10~CHF 150 return
Weil am Rhein (DE, via Basel)~110 km1h15~CHF 165 return

The honest answer: It is not worth it. CHF 150–180 in travel cost means that to come out net positive, you need to buy at least CHF 500+ worth of goods, with 2–3 people. Maybe once or twice a year for a very large run (meat + DM), but no more than that.

Tip for Lucerne residents: Optimise in Switzerland. Schönbühl Center with 4 supermarkets under one roof is your weapon. Compare with Rappn, use Thursday promotions, and the budget lines (M-Budget, Prix Garantie). Over a year, the savings are greater than anything you would get from a border trip.
