Grocery Shopping in Winterthur: The Practical Guide

Winterthur lives in Zurich's shadow, but when it comes to grocery shopping it has some real advantages. With 115,000 inhabitants, it is the canton's second-largest city and has a full range of supermarkets and discounters. The industrial Grüze area has turned into a genuine retail strip, with Coop Grüzemarkt, Migros Grüzepark, Aldi and Lidl all within walking distance of each other.

And there is one advantage many people do not know about: Jestetten and Lottstetten (Germany), the cross-border shopping destinations popular with people from Zurich, are closer from Winterthur than from central Zurich. By car, it is 20–25 minutes versus 30–35.

Winterthur's market is smaller than Zurich's, but more authentic and less touristy. Cheeses from the Tösstal and the Zurich Weinland are regional specialties worth seeking out. Saturday is the best day.

Winterthur's 4 shopping hubs

1. Rosenberg ★☆☆☆☆ (the main shopping centre)

Winterthur's main shopping centre. Large Migros (under renovation until autumn 2026, stays open during the works) + Denner (large wine selection). 300 parking spaces, 400 covered bike spaces. Free Kinderparadies for children aged 3–7. Migros Restaurant with hot food all day. Free Wi-Fi. Bus 3 from the centre (~15 min). Downside: Only Migros + Denner; no Coop, no Aldi/Lidl.

2. Grüze area ★☆☆☆☆ (the retail strip)

A real retail strip in the former industrial zone between Oberwinterthur and Seen. Coop Grüzemarkt (5,600 m² + DIY section), Migros Grüzepark, Aldi, Lidl – all in the same area! Coop since 2003, Migros since 2006. 582 parking spaces (Coop) + 260 (Migros). Buses 5 and 14; Winterthur-Grüze station (S-Bahn). This is THE place to compare prices in person – loop Aldi, Lidl, Migros and Coop in 20 minutes.

3. Marktgasse / Old Town

Marktgasse is Winterthur's shopping street: colourful buildings, fountains, old-town atmosphere. Migros Neuwiesen (near the centre), Coop in the centre, Denner. Downside: Small neighbourhood supermarkets; not for a full weekly shop.

4. Winterthur station

Migros and Coop Pronto. Open on Sundays. Major rail hub (S-Bahn to Zurich, trains to St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Frauenfeld). Downside: Small; Coop Pronto is 10–20% more expensive.
