Organic Food in Switzerland: Where is it Cheapest?

Organic food in Switzerland is pricier than in the rest of Europe. But the real surprise: organic at Migros and Coop costs 20–25% more than at Aldi and Lidl. The price watchdog investigated. Here are the numbers.

The numbers: what organic really costs

Saldo (March 2026): 40 organic products compared. Results:

RankSupermarket40 organic productsvs. Aldi
1 1stAldiCHF 123.48
2 2ndLidlCHF 125.61+1.7%
3 3rdCoopCHF 152.38+23.4%
4thMigrosCHF 155.05+25.6%

CHF 30 difference on the same organic basket. The Swiss price watchdog confirmed: in 80% of products examined, the absolute margin on organic is higher than on conventional goods. Organic buyers pay more — and retailers profit disproportionately.

Why Migros and Coop cost more

  1. Bio Suisse licence (Knospe) — adds 2–5% to the retail price. Aldi and Lidl don't use the Knospe and pay no licence fees.
  2. Widespread availability — more stores means more write-offs on perishables and higher storage costs. Discounters have a more concentrated organic range.
  3. Higher margins — FMS price monitor 2025: only 12% of the organic ham price reaches the farmer. The rest stays in the processing and retail chain.

The Bio Suisse paradox

Few people know: Knospe certification is not necessarily the strictest. Aldi's “Retour aux sources” exceeds Bio Suisse on some criteria — Aldi's organic vegetables are not fertilised with slaughterhouse waste, a practice still permitted in conventional Bio Suisse production. Lidl was the first Swiss retailer with STS animal welfare rating on all meat, organic and conventional (since 2021). Organic at Aldi/Lidl is not “lesser” organic. It is organic with different (sometimes higher) standards, without the Knospe logo and without licence fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does organic cost the same everywhere in Switzerland?

No. Saldo (March 2026): 40 organic products cost CHF 123.48 at Aldi and CHF 125.61 at Lidl — vs CHF 152.38 at Coop and CHF 155.05 at Migros. That's a 20–25% gap.

Why is organic pricier at Migros and Coop?

Three reasons: the Bio Suisse Knospe licence (+2–5%), widespread availability (more write-offs on perishables), and higher margins. The price watchdog confirmed that in 80% of products the organic margin is absolutely higher than the conventional one.

Is organic at Aldi and Lidl lower quality?

No. Aldi's 'Retour aux sources' exceeds Bio Suisse on some criteria. Lidl was the first Swiss retailer with STS animal welfare rating on all meat (since 2021). Best organic range is Coop (Naturaplan), but also the most expensive.
