What does a coffee capsule actually cost in Switzerland?

With capsule coffee, the system you own drives the price. If you have an original Nespresso machine you can either buy genuine Nespresso capsules or switch to the supermarkets' Nespresso-compatible own-brands, which fit the same machine. That is where the savings sit: the coffee itself is a small share of each capsule, while packaging, brand and distribution make up the bulk. Denner has told Swiss media that the coffee share per capsule is small, while packaging costs weigh disproportionately on the final price.

There is also the Delizio system (made by Migros subsidiary Delica) with its own machines and capsules. Discounters copy this capsule too: Lidl sells Delizio-compatible Bellarom capsules, with the cheapest variety under 18 centimes per piece and an organic version around 29 centimes, while genuine Delizio capsules cost about 41 centimes (source: Blick, Lidl press release 2020). Migros offers an M-Budget Delizio-compatible capsule from around 18 centimes.

Which capsule is cheapest: Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl or Denner?

No single retailer is the cheapest every week and in every category. On the absolute price per capsule, in summer 2025 the discounters Aldi and Lidl led, followed by Coop Prix Garantie. Denner regularly counters with 30-percent coffee promotions, which can push its effective per-capsule price well down during a promo week. Those promo weeks are exactly why a weekly price check pays off.

Aluminium or plastic: which capsule can you recycle?

Aluminium capsules are the more sustainable choice because aluminium is 100 percent recyclable and protects the aroma well. In the dedicated collection, the aluminium and the coffee grounds are separated: the aluminium stays in the materials cycle, and the grounds become biogas (source: Swiss Recycle, IGORA). Plastic or composite capsules do not belong in the aluminium-capsule collection because they disrupt the recycling process, and they normally end up in household waste.

You can return aluminium capsules at many Migros branches and via public collection points and Nespresso collection bags (picked up by Swiss Post). Migros says its goal is to lift the Swiss recycling rate for aluminium capsules from about 58 percent to 75 percent (source: corporate.migros.ch, Swiss Recycle). If you want to minimise the footprint, buy aluminium capsules and put them consistently into aluminium recycling. If price is your only metric, the discounters' own-brand capsules are the cheapest.

Rules of thumb for capsule coffee savings

First: own-brand instead of original on Nespresso-compatible capsules can save up to 80 percent per cup. Second: large packs (50 to 100 pieces) lower the per-unit price versus small packs. Third: if you also enjoy filter coffee or beans, the per-cup cost is almost always lower than with capsules, but that is a different category and worth its own comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the cheapest coffee capsules in Switzerland?

The cheapest Nespresso-compatible capsules are the discounters own-brands: Lidl cut to 9.98 centimes per capsule at the end of May 2025 (source: Lidl Schweiz), Aldi Barissimo sits around 9 centimes, and Coop Prix Garantie starts at about 10 centimes (source: 20 Minuten, June 2025).

How much does a genuine Nespresso Original capsule cost?

A genuine Nespresso Original capsule averages 50 to 57 centimes. The supermarkets Nespresso-compatible own-brands fit the same machine and are far cheaper, at roughly 9 to 18 centimes per capsule.

Are cheap capsules also lower quality?

Not necessarily. The coffee is a small share of each capsule, and much of the price is packaging and brand. We name no single winner across all categories: taste is subjective, and the best value depends on the variety and the promo week.

Aluminium or plastic capsules: which is more sustainable?

Aluminium capsules are 100 percent recyclable and can be returned at many Migros branches and at public collection points. Plastic or composite capsules do not belong in the aluminium collection and usually end up in household waste (source: Swiss Recycle, IGORA).

Is a weekly price check worth it for capsules?

Yes. Denner regularly runs 30-percent coffee promotions, and the discounters keep undercutting each other. The Rappn app shows in real time which capsule is cheapest in your region this week.
