Where are the cheapest groceries in Lugano and Ticino?

In Lugano, Aldi and Lidl are usually cheapest on staples, with M-Budget and Prix Garantie now matching discounter prices. A K-Tipp test (100 everyday items, cheapest variant per store, published September 2025) found an Aldi basket of CHF 230.94 versus CHF 250.70 at Coop, a gap of about CHF 19.76 or 8.6 percent. Shopping across the border in Italy (Como, Varese) only pays off up to the duty-free limit of CHF 150 per person per day.

Price comparison of the cheapest supermarkets in Lugano and Ticino with Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl and Denner plus the CHF 150 Italy border limit

As of June 2026. Lugano has something no other Swiss city shares: an open border to Italy. Como and Varese are 15 to 30 minutes away, and many Ticino families and cross-border commuters combine their local weekly shop with targeted trips over the border. We are neutral and have no commercial agreement with any retailer: no store is always cheapest, it depends on the week and the category. This page names the winner per category, explains the Italy rules honestly, and shows how to check the current Lugano basket live.

Which supermarket is cheapest in Lugano?

On staples, discounters Aldi and Lidl usually lead independent tests. K-Tipp compared (published September 2025) a basket of 100 everyday items such as potatoes, milk and soap, taking the cheapest variant in each store. The result shows how tight the gap on basics has become, now that Migros and Coop have cut their budget lines M-Budget and Prix Garantie to discounter level.

Coop (with Prix Garantie)CHF 250.70 most expensive in test

Source: K-Tipp, price comparison of 100 everyday items, published September 2025. Coop came out about 8.6 percent more expensive than Aldi here. Important: this is a snapshot. As soon as weekly promotions enter the picture, the ranking flips. On brand products, meat deals or weekly-basket specials, Migros and Coop regularly win, and in Lugano each district has its own mix of branches. Denner often scores in Ticino on drinks, wine and individual promo prices.

The category winners in Ticino

There is no single "cheapest supermarket". It makes more sense to decide per category, which is exactly what we built Rappn for.

This is exactly where the app earns its keep: Price comparison shows you, per product and per week, who is currently cheapest in Lugano, instead of a one-size-fits-all rule.

Is it worth shopping in Italy (Como, Varese)?

The honest answer: it depends on how much you buy. Migros estimates that Ticino consumers spend over CHF 500 million a year in Italy, making cross-border retail a heavyweight player for the canton. Still, there are clear rules you need to know.

Since 1 January 2025 the value-free limit (VAT-free import) is CHF 150 per person per day, down from CHF 300. Exceed it, and Swiss VAT applies to the entire goods value, not just the part above the limit. On top of that come quantity allowances for sensitive foods:

GoodsFree quantity per person/dayCharge above
Meat and meat products1 kg freeCHF 17 per kg (up to 10 kg)
Butter and cream1 kg / 1 L freeCHF 16 per kg / L
Oils, fats, margarine5 kg / 5 L freeCHF 2 per kg / L

Source: BAZG (Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security), as of 2026. Importing animal products is only allowed from EU states, and Italy qualifies. Budget tip: Italian VAT (often 22 percent) is not refunded to Swiss residents on a normal till receipt. Tax-free refunds only kick in above a minimum amount per receipt. So calculate net, product by product. For many basics an advantage remains, but it has shrunk since the duty-free limit was halved.

How to actually save in Lugano

The biggest saving comes not from one favourite chain but from splitting the shop: basics and cleaning products at the discounter, fresh produce and meat via the weekly promotions at Migros and Coop, drinks at Denner, and targeted Italy trips only when the volume justifies the CHF 150 limit. For more levers see how to save on groceries and the head-to-head Migros vs Coop.

Which supermarket is cheapest in Lugano?

On staples usually Aldi and Lidl: K-Tipp (published September 2025, 100 items) measured an Aldi basket of CHF 230.94 versus CHF 250.70 at Coop. With promotions, Migros and Coop flip the ranking, so a weekly live comparison in Rappn pays off.

Is it worth shopping in Italy for Ticino residents?

For basics often yes, but only up to the value-free limit of CHF 150 per person per day (as of 2026, BAZG). Above that, Swiss VAT applies to the entire goods value. Italian VAT of usually 22 percent is not refunded on normal receipts, so calculate net.

How much meat can I bring into Switzerland from Italy?

Per person per day, 1 kg of meat is duty-free, above that CHF 17 per kg (up to 10 kg). Butter and cream are free up to 1 kg/L (then CHF 16), oils and fats up to 5 kg/L (then CHF 2). Animal products from Italy as an EU state are allowed (source: BAZG).

Are M-Budget and Prix Garantie as cheap as Aldi and Lidl?
