Grocery Shopping in Geneva: The Practical Guide

Geneva is the Swiss city where France is 5 minutes by car. The Leclerc in Ferney-Voltaire is Geneva residents' favourite supermarket. Plainpalais has one of Switzerland's largest flea markets. And the Léman Express takes you to Annemasse by train. The complete guide.

Grocery Shopping in Geneva: The Practical Guide

Geneva is the Swiss city closest to France. Not "close" the way Basel is close to Germany (15 min tram). No: Geneva is literally surrounded by French territory. Ferney-Voltaire is 5 minutes by car. Annemasse is reachable by Léman Express (cross-border train). Saint-Julien is 15 minutes away. Val Thoiry, where there's even a French Migros, is 20 minutes away.

For Geneva residents, shopping in France isn't a "trip": it's routine. Migros Geneva lost 10% of revenue over 10 years due to cross-border shopping, and the margins of Migros (42%) and Coop (30%) are the highest in Europe. Everyone knows it, everyone takes advantage.

But Geneva also has extraordinary market life. Plainpalais hosts one of Switzerland's largest flea markets (300 vendors!), and the food market on Tuesday/Friday/Sunday is superb. And with Balexert (140+ shops, the region's largest Migros MMM), shopping in Switzerland is far from bad.

Shopping in France: the guide for Geneva residents

Destination 1: Ferney-Voltaire (5-10 min, nearest)

StoreComment for shoppers
Leclerc (Route de Meyrin)THE Geneva favourite. Large hypermarket, great prices, excellent fish counter. ~5 min from Mategnin border. Saturday car park often full, exit chaotic. Go early or mid-week.
Carrefour (Chemin de Brunette)Large hypermarket. Wider international range than Leclerc. Good cheese section. Near the border.
Carrefour Market (Ferney centre)Smaller, handy for quick shops. In the village centre.
Lidl (Ferney)Good prices on basics, fresh bread, fruit/veg.
Grand FraisFrench chain specialising in fresh produce (fruit, veg, fish, meat, cheese). Does NOT exist in Switzerland. Excellent quality, low prices on fresh goods. THE place for fruit and veg.

The Geneva calculation (Ferney): 5-10 min by car. Travel costs negligible (2-3 km). Even a small EUR 50-80 purchase is net positive. French TVA (5.5% food, 20% non-food) is already included in prices; no refund procedure like in Germany needed.

Destination 2: Annemasse (Léman Express, ~20 min from Cornavin)

The only cross-border destination reachable by urban rail!

StoreComment
Géant CasinoHuge hypermarket. Good prices, big selection. Less convenient than Ferney but larger.
Super U (Étrembiéres/Ambilly)Large store, just across the border.
PharmaciesCosmetics (Avène, La Roche-Posay, Bioderma) much cheaper than in Switzerland.

Destination 3: Saint-Julien-en-Genevois (15 min)

Intermarché (large, good prices, open 1 August since it's not a French holiday!). Leclerc Drive for online orders with pickup.

Destination 4: Val Thoiry / Vitam Neydens (15-20 min)

StoreComment

Geneva-specific tips

1. Ferney-Voltaire is 5 min away. For wine, fruit/veg, French cheese, cosmetics: always worth it. Leclerc = favourite.

6. Tobacco is more expensive in France (+30%). One of the rare cases where Switzerland is cheaper.

7. Pâquis = ethnic quarter. Spices, pulses, rice, Asian/African products: 30-50% cheaper.

8. No Aldi/Lidl in central Geneva. Only in peripheral areas (Meyrin, Vernier, Plan-les-Ouates).
