Which Swiss supermarket has the most stores?
A neutral, fully sourced 2026 ranking of the major Swiss grocery chains by number of stores, from Coop and Migros to Denner, Volg, Spar, Aldi and Lidl, plus what the coverage map means for towns versus villages.

By number of branches, Coop and Migros operate the largest grocery networks in Switzerland, but the single chain with the most individual food stores is actually the discounter Denner, with about 872 outlets including its independent Denner Partner shops. Coop runs roughly 982 supermarkets (and around 2,606 sales outlets in total across all its formats), while Migros has about 659 standalone supermarkets. After them come the village and convenience networks Volg (about 593 stores) and Spar (over 350), then the discounters Aldi Suisse (over 245) and Lidl Schweiz (over 190). The exact ranking depends on whether you count only classic supermarkets or every branded outlet a group operates, so the table below makes both views explicit, with each figure sourced.
Sources checked May 2026, all official or primary: Migros "Zahlen & Fakten 2025" (for Migros supermarkets, VOI, Migros-Partner, migrolino and Denner); the Denner "Fakten und Zahlen" page on denner.ch; Coop "Wichtige Kennzahlen" and report.coop.ch 2025; the Volg "Wer wir sind" page on volg.ch; the Spar Schweiz "Ueber uns" page on spar.ch. For the discounters, which publish rounded figures, we use their own "over 245" (Aldi) and "over 190" (Lidl) wording together with early-2026 press reporting (Blick, NZZ, foodaktuell). Store counts change as chains open and close branches, so figures are dated and approximate where a chain does not publish an exact number.
Rappn is the only neutral grocery price comparison app in Switzerland, with no commercial agreements with any retailer. We are not paid by Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl, Denner, Aligro, Volg or Otto's to rank them, and the size ranking below is a factual count, not an endorsement.
Swiss supermarkets ranked by number of stores (2026)
Two honest rankings exist, because the chains are structured differently. If you count classic, full supermarkets, Coop and Migros lead. If you count every branded food outlet a group runs (including small convenience and partner stores), the discounter Denner has the most single-brand stores, and Coop's group total is by far the largest. Here is the picture as of early to mid-2026, with the source for each figure.
| Chain | Stores (approx., 2026) | What is counted | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coop (group total) | ~2,606 outlets | All Coop retail formats together (supermarkets, restaurants, convenience and specialist formats) | Coop Wichtige Kennzahlen / report.coop.ch 2025 |
| Coop supermarkets | ~982 | Classic Coop supermarkets only (heading toward the 1,000th) | Coop 2025 figures |
| Denner | ~872 | Denner discounter stores incl. independent Denner Partner | denner.ch Fakten und Zahlen; Migros Zahlen & Fakten 2025 |
| Migros supermarkets | ~659 | Cooperative supermarkets M, MM, MMM (standalone) | Migros Zahlen & Fakten 2025 |
| Volg | ~593 | Volg-branded village stores (group serves ~907 small outlets in total) | volg.ch Wer wir sind |
| migrolino | ~384 | Convenience stores (Migros group, many at petrol stations) | Migros Zahlen & Fakten 2025 |
| Spar Schweiz | over 350 (~363) | Spar, Eurospar, Spar Express and TopCC, mostly franchised | spar.ch Ueber uns |
| Aldi Suisse | over 245 | Discounter stores (target ~260) | Aldi Suisse communications; Blick / NZZ 2026 |
| Lidl Schweiz | over 190 | Discounter stores (mid-term target ~250) | Lidl Schweiz; foodaktuell / swissinfo |
| VOI | ~81 | Small neighbourhood supermarkets (Migros-Partner format) | Migros Zahlen & Fakten 2025 |
Two notes on reading the table. First, the discounters Aldi and Lidl are still expanding fastest in percentage terms, so their numbers rise the quickest. Second, more stores does not mean cheaper or better; a discounter with a tight network can undercut a chain with twice the branches. Store count is about how near a shop is, not what it charges.
Which supermarket has the most stores in Switzerland?
It depends on what you mean by "store". If the question is which single brand has the most individual food shops, the answer is Denner, the Migros-owned hard discounter, at about 872 outlets including its Denner Partner shops, which are independently run but carry the Denner range. Denner describes itself as the third-largest food retailer in Switzerland and has announced plans to keep expanding toward roughly 1,000 stores. If the question is which retail group operates the most sales outlets of any kind, the answer is Coop, whose roughly 2,606 outlets span supermarkets, restaurants, convenience formats and specialist stores. And if you mean classic supermarkets specifically, Coop leads with about 982, closing in on its 1,000th, ahead of Migros at about 659 cooperative supermarkets.
Why Migros has a smaller supermarket count but huge reach
Migros often surprises people here, because it is usually thought of as the biggest retailer in Switzerland by sales, yet its standalone supermarket count (about 659 M, MM and MMM stores) is lower than Coop's. The reason is structure. The Migros group spreads its reach across several formats and brands rather than one supermarket fleet: alongside the cooperative supermarkets there are about 81 VOI neighbourhood shops, 54 Migros-Partner stores, around 384 migrolino convenience outlets, and the separately counted Denner discounter at about 872. Add those together and the Migros group's physical footprint is enormous, just distributed across brands. Coop, by contrast, carries more of its weight in the single Coop supermarket banner, which is why its supermarket number is higher.
Geographic coverage: who reaches the villages
Raw store counts hide an important difference in where the stores are. The big two, Coop and Migros, cluster in towns, cities and shopping centres, with full-range supermarkets sized for a weekly shop. Reaching small and rural communities is a different game, and here the village networks dominate. Volg, owned by the fenaco cooperative, is built specifically for villages, with about 593 small stores plus around 193 independent retailers and 121 AGROLA TopShop forecourt shops that it supplies, for roughly 907 small outlets served in all. Spar Schweiz, with over 350 mostly franchised outlets, plays a similar local role, often in locations too small for a Coop or Migros. So if the question is really "which supermarket is nearest in a Swiss village", the answer is frequently Volg or Spar, not the big two. Our Volg, Landi and Spar village shops guide goes deeper on rural coverage.
The discounters: fewer stores, fast growth
The two foreign-owned hard discounters have the smallest classic networks of the major chains, but they are the fastest growing. Aldi Suisse, which marked its 20th year in Switzerland in 2025, runs over 245 stores and has signalled a target around 260. Lidl Schweiz runs over 190 and has spoken of roughly 250 in the medium term and as many as 300 by 2035. Because they are still opening branches across the country, any precise figure dates quickly, which is exactly why this page gives their own "over 245" and "over 190" wording rather than a fixed number. For how their prices compare rather than their store counts, see Lidl vs Aldi in Switzerland.
More stores does not mean cheaper: check live prices
It is tempting to assume the chain with the most branches is the safe default, but store count and price are different things. A discounter such as Aldi, Lidl or Denner can be cheaper on a given basket than a chain with three times as many stores, and on any given week the cheapest option for your trolley depends on who is running promotions. Since 5 February 2026, Migros, Coop and Denner share the same Thursday to Wednesday promotion cycle, so their offers refresh together, while Aldi and Lidl run their own. A coverage map cannot tell you who is cheapest today; only live prices can.
That is the gap Rappn fills. You search a product, for example coffee or chicken, and see every active offer across Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl, Denner, Otto's and Aligro at once, with the price, the discount and the store, all filtered to your canton so you only see what is actually near you. You can set an alert so you are told the moment a product you buy regularly drops in price. It is free, and it has no commercial deal with any retailer. To see how the chains stack up on price rather than store count, start with the cheapest supermarket in Switzerland.
So which Swiss supermarket has the most stores?
The neutral, sourced answer in three parts. For the most individual stores under one brand, it is Denner at about 872. For the most classic supermarkets, it is Coop at about 982, nearing its 1,000th. For the most sales outlets of any kind, it is the Coop group at roughly 2,606. Migros has fewer standalone supermarkets (about 659) but a vast multi-brand footprint once you add VOI, Migros-Partner, migrolino and Denner. And for sheer village reach, Volg and Spar punch far above their size. Whichever is nearest you, remember that the most branches is not the same as the lowest price, so check this week's real prices in Rappn before you shop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which supermarket has the most stores in Switzerland?
It depends on what you count. The single brand with the most individual food stores is Denner, the Migros-owned discounter, at about 872 outlets including its Denner Partner shops. By classic supermarkets, Coop leads with about 982 (nearing its 1,000th), ahead of Migros at about 659. By total sales outlets of every format, the Coop group is largest with roughly 2,606. All figures are from official 2025 / 2026 company sources and are approximate where a chain does not publish an exact number.
Does Migros or Coop have more stores?
By classic supermarkets, Coop has more: about 982 Coop supermarkets versus about 659 standalone Migros supermarkets (M, MM and MMM), according to Coop's 2025 figures and Migros Zahlen & Fakten 2025. However, the Migros group spreads its reach across more brands, adding around 81 VOI shops, 54 Migros-Partner stores, about 384 migrolino convenience outlets and the separately counted Denner discounter (about 872), so its total physical footprint is very large.
Which supermarket has the best coverage in Swiss villages?
In small and rural communities, the village networks usually have the closest store rather than the big two. Volg, owned by fenaco, runs about 593 village stores and supplies a wider network of roughly 907 small outlets in total. Spar Schweiz adds over 350 mostly franchised outlets in similar local roles. Coop and Migros tend to cluster in towns, cities and shopping centres, so in a small village the nearest shop is often a Volg or a Spar.
Does the supermarket with the most stores have the lowest prices?
No. Store count and price are unrelated. A discounter such as Aldi, Lidl or Denner can be cheaper on a given basket than a chain with far more branches, and the cheapest option for your specific trolley changes weekly with promotions. To compare actual prices rather than store counts, use Rappn, which shows every current offer across Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl, Denner, Otto's and Aligro, filtered to your canton, for free.
