Migros Opening Hours on Swiss Public Holidays: The Rule, the Exceptions and Your Canton

On Swiss public holidays Migros follows one simple rule: ordinary neighbourhood and shopping-centre supermarkets stay shut, while branches inside railway stations, airports and motorway service areas stay open. Which days are holidays at all is almost entirely a cantonal matter — per SECO, 1 August is the only federal public holiday, and Art. 20a of the Labour Act lets each canton put a maximum of eight further holidays on the same footing as Sundays. A single Switzerland-wide Migros holiday list therefore cannot exist. What applies to your branch is decided by the combination of canton, municipality and location — and the binding time is always the one on your branch's page in the Migros store finder.

Is Migros open on 1 August?

1 August is the one day where the answer is the same across the whole country, precisely because SECO names it as the only federal public holiday. In practice: the supermarket on your street and the one in the mall close, while the outlets exempted from cantonal opening-hour rules stay open.

In 2026 the national day fell on a Saturday. On 30 July 2026 watson noted that at large railway stations and airports numerous shops are open on public holidays too. The same round-up named, for 1 August 2026, the Migros at Geneva-Cornavin station from 06.00 to 22.00, the Coop in the Shopville at Zurich main station from 08.00 to 22.30 and the Coop Pronto at Visp station from 05.00 to midnight. Those are examples from a dated piece of reporting, not a guarantee for the next 1 August and certainly not for your branch.

A second, official example: SBB lists the ShopVille at Zurich main station as open 09.00–20.00 on 1 August 2026, against a standard of 09.00–21.00 Monday to Friday and 09.00–20.00 at weekends. At a station, a public holiday usually means «shorter», not «closed».

Which public holidays apply in which canton?

This is where every generic list falls apart. The Canton of Solothurn states on its official page that the national day is a paid holiday equated with Sundays and that cantons may equate a maximum of eight further holidays with Sundays. Comparing three cantons shows how far the lists diverge:

The Bucheggberg district is the key lesson in that table: holidays can differ within a single canton. Anyone reading «Migros is closed on Corpus Christi in Canton Solothurn» is wrong for part of that canton. A second illustration comes from watson on 23 May 2026: Whit Monday is a statutory holiday or rest day in most cantons, with Valais the only exception.

Why are station Migros branches open on holidays?

Because two legal layers overlap. The first is opening-hour law: per SECO, whether a shop may open on a Sunday is governed by the cantonal shop-opening acts. The Canton of Zurich states that retail shops must in principle stay closed on public rest days, with explicit exceptions for public-transport hubs, pharmacies, dairies, bakeries, florists, kiosks and small shops.

The second layer is the station privilege. The Canton of Zurich points to Art. 39 of the Railways Act and states that these rules do not apply to businesses defined by the railway companies as ancillary operations on station premises. A shop on station premises is therefore not bound by cantonal rest days at all. On top of that sits labour law: per SECO, employing staff between Saturday 23:00 and Sunday 23:00 is prohibited in principle, with exceptions under Art. 25–27 of Ordinance 2 to the Labour Act for outlets at stations, at airports and at petrol-station shops on major traffic routes.

One caveat: centre hours are not branch hours. For the ShopVille at Zurich main station SBB gives a standard of 09.00–21.00 Monday to Friday and 09.00–20.00 at weekends, while the SBB shop page for the Migros in that same location gives 06.30–22.00 Monday to Friday and 08.00–22.00 at weekends. That is exactly why no list replaces the branch page.

Migros opening hours at Christmas and New Year

Over the festive period the retailer's own decision matters more than the law. On 17 October 2025, 20 Minuten asked the big chains; the figures below relate to the 2025 festive season and show the pattern, not the 2026 hours.

For 25 December the base rule plus the station exception applies again. SBB gives the ShopVille at Zurich main station as 09.00–18.00 on 25 December 2026, 09.00–20.00 on 26 December and 10.00–20.00 on 1 January. Whether 26 December is a holiday where you live depends on the canton: in Ticino St Stephen's Day is on the 2026 list per tio.ch, while it does not appear on the Geneva list published on ge.ch.

Easter, Ascension and Whitsun: what is open?

Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension and Whit Monday are the days where the cantonal border is felt most. Geneva lists all four; Solothurn names Good Friday and Ascension but not Easter Monday. And for Whit Monday 2026, watson wrote on 23 May 2026 that it is a statutory holiday or rest day in most cantons, with Valais the sole exception.

The same pattern repeated there: watson listed Sihlcity Zurich, Glattzentrum Zurich, Shoppi Tivoli Spreitenbach, St. Jakob-Park Shopping Center in Basel and Shoppyland in Schönbühl BE as closed, while the Mall of Switzerland in Ebikon LU and the Emmen Center in Emmen LU were open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. — and noted that, per SBB, the shops in the Shopville at Zurich main station and at all other large Swiss stations stay open on Whit Monday.

Why are there no uniform Migros holiday hours?

Because Migros is not one company with one timetable. Per corporate.migros.ch it is organised into ten cooperatives: Migros Aare, Basel, Genève, Luzern, Neuenburg-Freiburg, Ostschweiz, Tessin, Vaud, Wallis and Zürich. On 17 October 2025, 20 Minuten reported exactly that as Migros's answer: the cooperatives set festive-season hours individually.

Then comes the municipal layer. The Canton of Zurich writes that municipalities may designate four public rest days or Sundays on which shops may open, and that they must apply that rule uniformly across their whole territory. Three levels — federal, cantonal or municipal, cooperative — plus the special status of station premises: that is the entire reason «Migros opening hours holidays» has no single answer.

What does this mean for your shopping?

In practice it comes down to three steps. First: check whether the day is a holiday in your canton at all — for Corpus Christi, Assumption, All Saints, Immaculate Conception and St Stephen's Day that is half the work done. Second: if it is, shop the day before; the weekly promotions at Migros, Coop and Denner have started on Thursday since 5 February 2026, while Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz publish on Monday and Thursday. Third: if you still need something, the station is the most reliable address — with shorter hours than usual and usually at normal prices.
