Migros Genève: the Geneva cooperative, its stores and its opening hours

Migros Genève runs the stores in the canton of Geneva and the Vaud district of Nyon: at 31 December 2025 that meant 33 supermarkets (3 MMM, 9 MM, 21 M), 25 specialist shops and 9 restaurants and take-aways, with 2,664 staff and 133,330 cooperative members (activity report 2025). In Geneva, shops close at 19:00, on Friday at 19:30 and on Saturday at 18:00, with one late evening a week until 21:00 (LHOM and ge.ch). The Thursday promotion start is national, the range on the shelf is not. Which offers apply in Geneva today you can see live in Rappn.

Shopping trolley in front of a supermarket shelf in Geneva, with weekly promotion labels in the background

Migros Genève is one of the ten regional Migros cooperatives, and it is the one that runs the stores in the canton of Geneva and the Vaud district of Nyon. It was founded in 1945. At 31 December 2025 its network counted 33 supermarkets, of which 3 MMM, 9 MM and 21 M, plus 25 specialist shops and 9 restaurants and take-aways, with 2'664 staff and 133'330 cooperative members, per its own activity report for 2025. What the cooperative decides locally is the store network and the regional products. The promotion calendar, by contrast, is national.

What is Migros Genève, and how far does its territory reach?

The cooperative was founded in 1945, and its first shop opened on rue du Port in the middle of Geneva; it celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2025 (activity report 2025). Its seat is in Carouge, as the auditor's report inside the same document states. According to its page on corporate.migros.ch it operates "à Genève et dans le district de Nyon", that is in the canton of Geneva and the Vaud district of Nyon, and it describes itself there as the canton's second largest employer. In the report's key figures the territory is drawn wider still: canton of Geneva, district of Nyon and neighbouring France.

In practice, the cooperative border is not the canton border. Shopping in Nyon means shopping in Migros Genève territory, even though Nyon is in Vaud. How the ten cooperatives are organised, and why each gets its own edition of the weekly flyer, is covered by our guide to the Migros regional cooperatives. This page is only about Geneva.

How many Migros stores are there in Geneva, and in which formats?

The 2025 activity report lists the sales network at 31 December 2025 format by format. Total sales area is 96,113 m2, and 36.3 million customers were served in 2025. One caveat before reading the table: these figures cover the whole cooperative, Geneva and Nyon together, not the canton alone.

Source for every row: Migros Genève activity report 2025, key figures at 31.12.2025. The format letters tell you how wide the range is: M is the neighbourhood Migros, MM the mid-sized supermarket, MMM the large one with the broadest choice. For a full weekly shop with fresh counters aim for an MMM; for a top-up an M will do.

How late are shops open in Geneva?

Geneva regulates shop opening at cantonal level, in its shop opening hours act (LHOM, rsGE I 1 05). Article 9 sets ordinary closing at 19:00, Friday at 19:30 and Saturday at 18:00. Article 14 allows one evening a week until 21:00, and the cantonal page "Horaires de fermeture des magasins" on ge.ch puts that evening on Thursday. From 10 December to 3 January, article 14A adds one further evening until 21:30.

Sundays are closed. Article 16 LHOM requires shops to close on Sundays and legal public holidays, while article 18 allows opening to the public until 17:00 on 31 December and on two Sundays a year. Kiosks and traveller-service businesses, like petrol stations, fall outside the act under article 4, which is why a shop at a transport hub keeps different hours from your neighbourhood Migros. The binding times are always the ones shown on your own store's page.

The two public holidays only Geneva has

Geneva has two public holidays of its own: the Jeûne genevois and the Restauration de la République on 31 December. Both appear on the official cantonal list (ge.ch) alongside 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday, 1 August and 25 December. For 2026 the same list puts the Jeûne genevois on Thursday 10 September 2026 and the Restauration de la République on Thursday 31 December 2026.

The combination is worth knowing before you plan a shop. Both Geneva holidays fall on a Thursday in 2026, and Thursday is exactly the day Migros and Denner start their weekly Aktionen, since 5 February 2026, with Coop doing so since January 2025. The new promotion week therefore begins while the shop is shut. On 31 December, article 18 LHOM at least permits opening until 17:00. For how public holidays shift Migros hours generally, see our guide to Migros opening hours on public holidays.

What the cooperative decides, and what is national

The cooperative decides its own sales network and its regional products. In 2025 Migros Genève renovated its Fusterie and Vésenaz stores, opened a new Change Migros office on the Pont-Rouge esplanade in Lancy, and on 29 September opened its eighth mprint-shop, in Meyrin. Looking ahead, the report says it will keep renovating and expanding the network, notably by acquiring convenience stores. In the other direction, the OBI group took over the two Do it + Garden stores at MParc La Praille and Porte de Nyon in 2025.

National, by contrast, are the promotion start and the low-price strategy. The report describes a new supermarket strategy with more than 1,000 articles at low prices and puts its 2025 effect at an index of minus 1.3 percent. The cooperative's supermarket turnover was CHF 765 million in 2025, down 1.4 percent, and the report attributes the fall mainly to renovation closures: on a constant sales area, turnover rose 0.7 percent and customer frequency 3 percent. Since 1 July 2025 the four Romandie cooperatives have pooled their logistics in Migros Logistique Romande at Ecublens (VD), with regional centres in Geneva and Martigny, and since 1 October 2025 their marketing in Migros Marketing Romand, with the stated aim of a range better suited to Romandie. The same report notes that Migros Logistique Romande was subsequently taken over by Migros Verteilbetrieb AG, the Migros group's national logistics entity.

That is why what appears in the Geneva flyer on Thursday is not what appears in the Zurich one: the flyer is published per region, and the Geneva edition carries the code GE. Prices change every week, and Rappn shows the ones that apply today. Where to find the flyer online is covered in our guide to the Migros flyer online; what starts the following week is in Migros deals next week.

GRTA and "De la région. Pour la région.": the regional products

Geneva farming has its own cantonal label: "Genève Région Terre Avenir", GRTA for short. In its 2025 activity report, Migros Genève writes that it continues to offer its customers a generous range of articles labelled "Genève Région Terre Avenir (GRTA)" or "De la région. Pour la région.", in close collaboration with local producers.

For a shopper these are two different promises. GRTA is a cantonal provenance label and is not owned by Migros; "De la région. Pour la région." is the Migros regional label in French-speaking Switzerland. Both speak about origin, not price: depending on the week, a regional product can cost more or less than a standard article, and you only see that by comparing.

Geneva and neighbouring France: three stores now under the U banner

The Migros Genève group network also reaches into neighbouring France. At 31 December 2025 the report counts 2 hypermarkets, 1 supermarket, 1 petrol station, 1 hotel and 1 retail and leisure centre there. In 2025, as part of its tie-up with Coopérative U, Migros France converted its three French stores into U stores: Thoiry opened on 16 January, Étrembières on Thursday 23 January and Neydens on Thursday 30 January.

For anyone crossing the border from Geneva that means U shelves, on which, per the report, customers still find the Migros products they are used to; the best sellers there are ready-to-eat fondue and Swiss chocolate. A cross-border basket calculation, though, is not something Rappn can do for you: the comparison covers the Swiss chains, namely Migros, Coop, Aldi Suisse, Lidl Schweiz, Denner, Aligro and Otto's, not French stores.

So where is the cheapest place to shop in Geneva? It depends

It depends on the week, the category and your store. An MMM stocks articles a neighbourhood Migros simply does not carry, and whether an item costs less at Migros, at Coop or at a discounter is settled afresh every Thursday. That is why this guide carries no price table: every figure would be wrong within seven days. What is here is the network, the opening rule and the rhythm.

Rappn shows you all the current offers of the seven chains side by side, in four languages, filterable by canton, with the unit price per kilo or litre next to the pack price, and with no account to create. You can keep your shopping list there, store your loyalty cards and set a price alert on a product, instead of opening several flyers every Thursday.

Next step: open the current Migros offers, filter to Geneva and compare them with the other chains before you set off. Rappn is free and is paid by no retailer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which territory does Migros Genève cover?

The canton of Geneva and the Vaud district of Nyon. On corporate.migros.ch the cooperative, founded in 1945, describes itself as active "à Genève et dans le district de Nyon" and as the canton's second largest employer. In the key figures of its 2025 activity report the territory also includes neighbouring France. The cooperative border is therefore not the canton border.

How many Migros stores does the Geneva cooperative run?

At 31 December 2025: 33 supermarkets, of which 3 MMM, 9 MM and 21 M, plus 25 specialist shops (including 13 Change Migros bureaux, 8 MPrint-Shops, 3 Outlets and 1 Locaski), 9 restaurants and take-aways and 4 VOI franchises. Total sales area is 96,113 m2 (activity report 2025). These figures cover Geneva and Nyon together, not the canton alone.

How late are shops open in Geneva?

The Geneva LHOM sets ordinary closing at 19:00 in article 9, Friday at 19:30 and Saturday at 18:00. Article 14 allows one evening a week until 21:00, which the cantonal ge.ch page places on Thursday. From 10 December to 3 January one further evening until 21:30 is possible. The binding times are always those published on your own store page.

Do shops open on Sundays in Geneva?

As a rule, no. Article 16 LHOM requires closure on Sundays and legal public holidays, while article 18 allows opening to the public until 17:00 on 31 December and on two Sundays a year. Kiosks and traveller-service businesses, as well as petrol stations, fall outside the act under article 4 and may therefore keep different hours.

Which public holidays exist only in Geneva?

The Jeûne genevois and the Restauration de la République on 31 December. Both appear on the official cantonal list (ge.ch), which for 2026 puts the Jeûne genevois on Thursday 10 September 2026 and the Restauration de la République on Thursday 31 December 2026. In 2026 they therefore fall on the very day Migros and Denner start their weekly Aktionen.

Are Migros offers the same in Geneva as in Zurich?

The start day is the same, the content not necessarily. Migros and Denner start their weekly Aktionen on Thursday since 5 February 2026, Coop since January 2025. The flyer, however, is published per region, and the Geneva edition carries the code GE. Which offers apply in your canton today you can see live in Rappn: free, with no account, and filterable by canton.
