The Ten Migros Cooperatives: What Actually Differs by Region

Migros is a federation of ten regional cooperatives: Aare, Basel, Genève, Luzern, Neuchâtel-Fribourg, Ostschweiz, Ticino, Vaud, Valais and Zürich (corporate.migros.ch, September 2026). Each runs the stores in its own territory and gets its own edition of the weekly flyer, identified by a regional code. The promotion start is national, Thursday since 5 February 2026; what goes into the flyer is decided regionally. Which offers apply in your canton today you can see live in Rappn.

Rappn compares prices across all 7 chains live: free, no account.

Map of Switzerland showing the territories of the ten Migros cooperatives with a weekly flyer beside it

Migros is not one company but a federation of ten regional cooperatives: Migros Aare, Migros Basel, Migros Genève, Migros Luzern, Migros Neuchâtel-Fribourg, Migros Ostschweiz, Migros Ticino, Migros Vaud, Migros Valais and Migros Zürich (corporate.migros.ch, retrieved September 2026). Each one runs the stores in its own territory, gets its own edition of the weekly flyer, and decides for itself what counts as a regional product in its area. The promotion week starts on the same day nationwide; the range on the shelf does not. That is why a deal you saw online, or that a friend told you about, can simply not exist one region away.

What a Migros cooperative is, and why there are ten

The division of labour takes three sentences on the "Organisation" page of corporate.migros.ch. The Federation of Migros Cooperatives coordinates the group's activities, sets the overall strategy and represents Migros as a brand to the outside world. The cooperatives ensure the operation of the branches, stay close to their customers, secure the procurement of regional products and provide a strong regional anchoring. Between the two sits Migros Supermarkt AG, the service provider to the cooperatives' supermarkets wherever standardisation, scale and cost efficiency are decisive.

Translated into everyday shopping: strategy and brand are national, the shop on your street is regional. The cooperatives are owned by their members, not by shareholders. At the end of 2025, per the group's annual report, Migros belonged to more than 2.3 million cooperative members, on group revenue of around CHF 31.9 billion in the same year. Migros sums the structure up on its own cooperatives page: organised in ten cooperatives, it says, they achieve more together for everyone.

The ten cooperatives: territory, head office and their own flyer edition

The table below collects what each cooperative writes on its own page about its territory and its seat, plus the code its weekly flyer is published under. Where a page names no head office, the table says so. None of these figures carries a cut-off date on the page itself: they are the position as of September 2026.

Migros ZürichMost of the canton of Zurich, all of Glarus, plus neighbouring localities in St. Gallen and Schwyz on the upper Lake Zurich, over 100 supermarkets, over 6,000 staffnot stated on the pageZH

One detail surprises most people: cooperative borders do not follow canton borders. The canton of Zurich is split between Migros Zürich and Migros Ostschweiz, Migros Genève reaches across into the Vaud district of Nyon, Migros Basel runs branches in Solothurn, and Migros Ostschweiz is also present in Liechtenstein.

Which cooperative does my Migros store belong to?

Three routes to the answer, none of them requiring an account. The first is the flyer code. On issuu.com/m-magazin the magazine and the weekly flyer appear with an issue number, a language and a regional code; for issue 36 of 2 September 2026 those are the ten variants AA, BL, GE, LU, NE, OS, TI, VD, VS and ZH. The code printed on your flyer names your cooperative. The second route is the table above: in most cantons the assignment is unambiguous. The third is your store selection in the Migros app or on migros.ch, since that is what decides which regional range you are shown.

If you live near a boundary, on the upper Lake Zurich, in Nyon or in the Solothurn Schwarzbubenland, you often have two cooperatives within driving distance, and therefore two different flyers in the same week. That is not a glitch in the system; that is the system.

National or regional: where the line runs

The rhythm is set nationally. Since 5 February 2026, Migros promotions start on Thursday and run to the Wednesday of the following week; before that the start day was Tuesday. Denner, also part of the Migros Group, switched on the same date, while Coop had already moved in the week of 21 January 2025. What ends up in Thursday's flyer, by contrast, is a regional matter.

"Aus der Region. Für die Region.": the cooperative defines the region

Nowhere is the regional logic clearer than in Migros's best known regional label. The national umbrella regulation W7.6.1, edition 15, released on 14 December 2021, sets out two points that explain everything. First: the sourcing region is defined by the respective Migros cooperative, and that region is set down in writing as a list of postcodes. Second: the owner of the regional brand is the respective Migros cooperative, and each cooperative is responsible for implementing the regulation.

The product requirements are strict. Non-composite products, milk, vegetables or meat for example, must come 100 percent from the defined sourcing region. For composite products such as a fruit yoghurt or a sausage, all agricultural ingredients must come from that region; where that is not possible, the main ingredient must be 100 percent regional and 80 percent of the agricultural ingredients in total. Because each cooperative keeps its own postcode list, the same article is a regional product in one region and not in the next. That is why you find things on holiday in Switzerland that do not exist at home.

In Ticino the regional line carries its own name: Migros Ticino runs "Nostrani del Ticino" (migrosticino.ch). How that cooperative works in detail is covered in our profile of Migros Ticino.

Flyer, restaurants and size: what each cooperative does itself

There is no single nationwide Migros flyer. On issuu the magazine and the weekly flyer appear per region and per language: in issue 36 of 2 September 2026 in German, in French and, for Ticino, in Italian. Where to find it and how it is built is covered in our guide to the Migros flyer online.

Catering also sits with the cooperatives. Migros Ostschweiz states over 120 supermarkets and 50 catering outlets on its page, Migros Vaud 72 stores and 12 catering outlets. There is therefore no national menu plan, only one per cooperative, which is why menus and prices in the Migros restaurant differ from region to region. What a menu costs is in our guide to Migros restaurant prices.

Size comparisons between the cooperatives deserve caution. The official pages give 9,000 staff and over 120 supermarkets for Ostschweiz, over 6,000 staff and over 100 daily supplied supermarkets for Zürich, around 8,000 staff for Aare, around 3,300 for Vaud and 1,221 for Valais. None of those figures carries a cut-off date, so they are snapshots rather than a clean ranking. Migros Zürich does give one dated result: 76,242,942 customer contacts in 2025, 2.2 percent more customers than the year before. Which chain runs the most stores overall is covered in our overview of the supermarket with the most stores.

Which cooperative is the cheapest? It depends on the week

As a ranking, there is no serious answer. Migros runs its core range nationally, but promotions, availability and regional articles differ, and a weekly basket always contains both. And there is the real point: the comparison that saves you money is not between two Migros cooperatives, it is between the chains standing side by side in your canton. That is exactly why this guide carries no price table, because every figure would be wrong by the following Thursday.

Prices change every Thursday and Rappn shows the ones in force right now: all current offers from the seven chains Migros, Coop, Aldi Suisse, Lidl Schweiz, Denner, Aligro and Otto's, in four languages, across all 26 cantons, with the unit price next to the pack price. No account is needed, and no chain pays for its placement.

Next step: open the current offers, filter to your canton and put your region's Migros promotion next to the other chains. Then set a price alert on something you buy anyway: Rappn tells you on Thursday instead of you working through ten regional flyers. Rappn is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Migros cooperatives are there, and what are they called?

Ten. On corporate.migros.ch (retrieved September 2026): Migros Aare, Migros Basel, Migros Genève, Migros Luzern, Migros Neuchâtel-Fribourg, Migros Ostschweiz, Migros Ticino, Migros Vaud, Migros Valais and Migros Zürich. Migros itself frames the structure as being organised in ten cooperatives that achieve more together for everyone. At the end of 2025 the group belonged to more than 2.3 million cooperative members, per its annual report.

Which cooperative does my Migros store belong to?

The fastest answer is the regional code on the weekly flyer. On issuu.com/m-magazin the flyer is published per region: for issue 36 of 2 September 2026 in the ten variants AA, BL, GE, LU, NE, OS, TI, VD, VS and ZH. Otherwise the territory table in this guide answers it for most cantons, and in the Migros app your selected store decides which regional range you see. Note that cooperative boundaries do not follow canton borders: the canton of Zurich, for instance, is split between Migros Zürich and Migros Ostschweiz.

Are Migros promotions the same across Switzerland?

The start day is; the content is not necessarily. Since 5 February 2026 Migros promotions begin on Thursday and run to Wednesday; Denner switched on the same date, Coop already in the week of 21 January 2025. The weekly flyer, however, is published per cooperative and per language, as the ten regional editions of issue 36 of 2 September 2026 on issuu.com/m-magazin show. What applies in your store therefore depends on your region.

Why do some regional products exist only in one region?

Because the region is defined by the cooperative. The national umbrella regulation W7.6.1 for the label "Aus der Region. Für die Region." (edition 15, released 14 December 2021) states that the sourcing region is set by the respective Migros cooperative and defined in writing as a postcode list. Non-composite products such as milk, vegetables or meat must come 100 percent from that region. The same article can therefore be a regional product here and not in the next region.

Which Migros cooperative is the biggest?

There is no clean ranking: the cooperatives publish different metrics and no cut-off dates. On their own pages (September 2026), Migros Ostschweiz states 9,000 staff and over 120 supermarkets, Migros Zürich over 6,000 staff and over 100 supermarkets, Migros Aare around 8,000 staff, Migros Vaud around 3,300 and Migros Valais 1,221. Those are snapshots, not directly comparable figures.
