Grocery deals in Geneva this week: every chain at a glance

In Geneva, Thursday counts twice. It is the day Migros, Coop and Denner launch their weekly deals, and it is also the only evening on which cantonal law lets Geneva shops stay open until 21:00. Which chains have stores in the city of Geneva?

You will often read that Geneva's discounters are banished to the outskirts. That is no longer true: Lidl runs three stores inside city postcodes, Denner has a string of neighbourhood shops, and the ALIGRO cash-and-carry sits in Les Acacias, inside the urban perimeter. When do the weekly deals start in Geneva?

Thursday is now the day that matters, across Switzerland and therefore in Geneva too. Coop moved its promotion start from Tuesday to Thursday in January 2025. Migros and Denner followed together on 5 February 2026: weekly deals now run Thursday through Wednesday, and the weekend specials, previously limited to Friday and Saturday, run Thursday through Sunday (sources: corporate.migros.ch, denner.ch).

One practical detail changes the routine: Migros Magazine and Denner's Hebdo are now delivered on Wednesday, the eve of the new promotion week. The Geneva Thursday: new deals and late opening on the same evening

This is the Geneva specificity. The cantonal law on shop opening hours sets staggered closing times, and Thursday is the only extended evening of the week (source: ge.ch, shop closing times).

In practice: on Thursday evening in Geneva the deals are new and the shelves are still full, whereas on Saturday afternoon you are buying from picked-over stock. For a working household that is the best window of the week, and it happens to be the one the canton gives you the most time for.

Migros Genève: a cooperative for Geneva and the Nyon district

Migros is not a centrally run chain but a federation of regional cooperatives. Geneva has its own: the Migros Genève cooperative has been rooted in the region since 1945, serves canton Geneva and the district of Nyon, has roughly 133,330 members and describes itself as the canton's second-largest employer (source: corporate.migros.ch).

Why this matters for your wallet: assortments and individual promotions can differ between cooperatives. A deal running in Zurich or Basel is not automatically identical in Geneva, and Nyon belongs to Geneva rather than to Migros Vaud. Driving into France or catching the Geneva deals?

Geneva is surrounded by French territory: Ferney-Voltaire is minutes away, Annemasse is served by the Léman Express, Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and Val Thoiry are a quarter of an hour out. Since 1 January 2025, however, the duty-free allowance is CHF 150 per person per day, down from CHF 300. Above that, Swiss VAT is due on the entire value of the goods, not just the excess. The allowance is granted once per day per person, children included, but it can be combined for people travelling together. Animal products may only be imported from the EU, Iceland, Northern Ireland and Norway (source: bazg.admin.ch).

So the border run no longer pays off across the board; it depends on your list. Swiss promotions of 20 to 50 percent on branded goods can shrink the gap sharply on individual items, and travel, parking and time come on top.
