Swiss grocery prices in 2027: what the official forecasts actually say

For 2027, the Federal Government Expert Group (18 June 2026), the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich (17 June 2026) and the Swiss National Bank (18 June 2026) all put inflation at 0.6%. No official forecast exists for food alone. This page brings together the sourced figures, the scenario range from 0.2% to 1.4%, and the world markets for coffee, cocoa, butter and sugar, each with its source and month.

For 2027, all three official Swiss forecasts point the same way: headline inflation of 0.6%. The Federal Government Expert Group on Business Cycles (SECO) published 0.6% for 2026 and 0.6% for 2027 on 18 June 2026, the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich published the same two figures on 17 June 2026, and the Swiss National Bank's conditional inflation forecast of 18 June 2026 stands at 0.6% for 2026, 0.6% for 2027 and 0.7% for 2028. The part that matters for shoppers: none of these institutions publishes a separate forecast for food alone. What follows is therefore the sourced headline numbers plus the world commodity markets that actually reach your trolley.

Will grocery prices go down in Switzerland in 2027?

The honest answer is that nobody forecasts that, because nobody publishes an official forecast for food alone. What does exist is the forecast for the Swiss consumer price index, meaning the whole basket. For 2027 it stands at 0.6% (Federal Government Expert Group on Business Cycles, 18 June 2026). That is a rise, not a fall, but a very small one.

For context, from the annex table of that same forecast, sourced to the Federal Statistical Office and SECO: the index rose 1.1% in 2024 and 0.2% in 2025. The 2027 forecast therefore sits between two very quiet years. Anyone promising you a specific price per kilo for 2027 has made it up.

What do SECO, KOF and the SNB forecast for 2027?

InstitutionInflation 2026Inflation 2027Published
Federal Government Expert Group on Business Cycles (SECO)0.6%0.6%18 June 2026 (March 2026 forecast: 0.4% and 0.5%)
KOF Swiss Economic Institute, ETH Zurich0.6% (previously 0.3%)0.6% (unchanged)17 June 2026
Swiss National Bank, conditional inflation forecast0.6%0.6% (2028: 0.7%)18 June 2026

The movement between two forecast rounds is worth noting. In March 2026 the Expert Group still had 0.4% for 2026 and 0.5% for 2027; in June both were raised to 0.6%. SECO's stated reason: the crisis in the Middle East pushed oil prices sharply higher, so the Expert Group raised its technical oil price assumption substantially. The SNB left its policy rate at 0% on 18 June 2026 and describes its forecast as within the range of price stability across the whole forecast horizon.

How reliable is an inflation forecast for 2027?

That is exactly why SECO publishes two alternative scenarios alongside the June forecast. They show the possible spread more clearly than any commentary could.

Scenario (SECO, June 2026)Oil 2027, Brent in USD per barrelSwiss inflation 2027Swiss GDP 2027
June 2026 forecast810.6%1.6%
Positive scenario670.2%2.0%
Negative scenario1101.4%1.0%

The range for 2027 therefore runs from 0.2% to 1.4%. The negative scenario assumes a prolonged disruption of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, the positive one a faster fall in oil prices. A forecast is a calculation under assumptions, not a promise.

Coffee shows how fast one of these markets can turn. Per the ICO, the indicator fell to 231.96 US cents on 9 June 2026, its lowest level in nearly two years, then rebounded 17.4% to 272.39 cents. Two announcements drove it: the Japan Meteorological Agency on 10 June and the US agency NOAA on 11 June put the confidence of a "Super El Niño" at 67%, and heavy rainfall slowed the Brazilian harvest. Pulling the other way, on 1 June the USDA forecast a record Brazilian 2026/27 crop, 14% above the previous season. Combined ICE-certified stocks stood at 1.09 million bags on 30 June, the lowest since February 2024.

On freight, the ICO report gives concrete 2026 numbers: the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed from 28 February, adding 10 to 14 days to Asia-Europe routes; from mid to late February, bunker fuel prices rose 68%, container spot rates roughly doubled and fertilizer prices rose 25%. Following the US-Iran agreement of 17 June, the passage reopened gradually on 22 and 23 June. Costs like these reach the shelf with a lag, and no source quantifies how much of it lands in Swiss retail prices in 2027.

Whether your own basket costs more in 2027 depends on what is in it and where you fill it. A forecast for the overall index tells you nothing about your coffee, your butter or your carrots. That cannot be predicted, only checked: in Rappn you see over 10,000 live offers across seven chains plus the unit price per kilo or litre, so the current state rather than an estimate.

Why does an energy price shock hit Switzerland less hard?

SECO gives three reasons with figures in "Konjunkturtendenzen Sommer 2026". First, the weight of energy in the consumer price basket is low by international standards: energy including fuels accounts for 5.1% in Switzerland, 9.0% in the euro area and 6.3% in the United States; for petroleum products alone it is 2.1% against 4.0% and 3.0%. Second, the Swiss economy is less energy intensive. Third, the franc tends to appreciate in uncertain periods, which cushions oil prices quoted in US dollars.

The effect is already measurable: between February and May 2026 inflation rose 0.5 percentage points in Switzerland according to SECO, against 1.3 percentage points in the euro area. For 2027 SECO expects 2.0% in the euro area and 2.2% in the United States, against 0.6% in Switzerland. How large the overall price gap to neighbouring countries is, we cover separately in our price level comparison.

What can you actually control in 2027?

Not world markets, but the weekly rhythm. Since 5 February 2026, Migros, Coop and Denner start their weekly promotions on Thursday; Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz release new offers on Monday and on Thursday.

ChainWeekly promotions startSince
MigrosThursday5 February 2026
CoopThursday5 February 2026
DennerThursday5 February 2026
Aldi SuisseMonday and Thursdayongoing
Lidl SchweizMonday and Thursdayongoing

In practice: Thursday is the day with the most fresh offers, Monday the second entry point at the two discounters. On top of that come the levers that work regardless of any forecast: compare the unit price per kilo or litre rather than the pack price, set price alerts on the products you buy every week anyway, share the household shopping list, keep loyalty cards in one wallet, and scan receipts to see where your money actually goes. Rappn covers seven chains, is available in four languages and is free. The full method is in our guide on saving money on groceries in Switzerland, and how prices actually moved in 2026 is in grocery inflation Switzerland 2026.

How often is this page updated?

Whenever a new forecast round is published. The Federal Government Expert Group publishes several times a year, KOF likewise, and the SNB assesses the situation quarterly. We then replace the figures in the tables and re-date the page. We add no forecasts of our own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will grocery prices go down in Switzerland in 2027?

No official Swiss body forecasts that, because none publishes a forecast for food alone. For the whole consumer price index, the Federal Government Expert Group on Business Cycles forecast 0.6% for 2027 on 18 June 2026. For comparison, the same annex table, sourced to the Federal Statistical Office and SECO, shows 1.1% for 2024 and 0.2% for 2025. A very small rise is expected, not a fall.

What is the inflation forecast for Switzerland in 2027?

Three institutions give the same figure. The Federal Government Expert Group on Business Cycles expects 0.6% for 2026 and 0.6% for 2027, published 18 June 2026. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich also gives 0.6% and 0.6%, published 17 June 2026. The Swiss National Bank conditional inflation forecast of 18 June 2026 stands at 0.6% for 2026, 0.6% for 2027 and 0.7% for 2028.

How wrong can a 2027 forecast be?

SECO quantifies that itself. In the scenarios published in "Konjunkturtendenzen Sommer 2026", 2027 inflation is 0.2% in the positive scenario with Brent at USD 67 per barrel and 1.4% in the negative scenario with Brent at USD 110, against 0.6% in the baseline forecast. The range therefore runs from 0.2% to 1.4%.

Will coffee get cheaper in 2027?

There is no reliable forecast for that, only the current market. Per the International Coffee Organization, the ICO Composite Indicator averaged 248.90 US cents per pound in June 2026, down 2.8% from May 2026. Within the month it fell to 231.96 cents on 9 June and then rebounded 17.4% to 272.39 cents, after the Japanese and US weather agencies put the confidence of a "Super El Niño" at 67% on 10 and 11 June.

Why is there no forecast specifically for food prices?

The official forecasts from the Federal Government Expert Group, KOF and the SNB cover the whole consumer price index, not individual product groups. None of them publishes a forecast for carrots, butter or retail coffee. Rappn does not produce one either. What can be checked is current prices and promotions in the app, not 2027 prices.

What can a household do despite the uncertainty?

Watch the weekly rhythm and the unit price. Since 5 February 2026, Migros, Coop and Denner start their weekly promotions on Thursday, while Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz release new offers on Monday and Thursday. Add price alerts on the products you buy weekly anyway, a shared shopping list, loyalty cards kept in one wallet, and receipt scanning to see where the money actually goes.
