AI Shopping Agents: What Can They Do in Switzerland Today?

An AI shopping agent does more than answer: it opens websites and fills carts for you. In October 2026 the pages of the AI vendors we read describe paying directly in the chat mainly for the United States or for selected merchants, and none names Switzerland; Gemini’s “tasks” are not available here. According to a University of St. Gallen study presented on 19 May 2026, which surveyed almost 3'000 people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, AI applications such as ChatGPT are used in about 5% of all omnichannel purchases.

An AI shopping agent is an assistant that does more than answer: it uses tools, such as a browser, to carry out a task for you. In the vendor pages we read in October 2026, a grocery shop done entirely by an AI in Switzerland is not documented: an agent can prepare your list and, on a paid plan, fill a cart, but the final say on payment stays with you.

What is an AI shopping agent?

An AI agent is a system in which a language model directs its own steps and its use of tools, typically in a loop (Anthropic’s definition, 19 December 2024). A chatbot answers with text; an agent acts: it opens a page, compares, fills in a form. In shopping there are three levels, each with more power over your money:

  • It prepares. It writes the list or compares two products; you do the shopping.
  • It acts in the browser. It opens a shop and fills the cart; you check and confirm.
  • It pays. It completes the order with a payment method you have authorised.

Many assistants use the open standard MCP to connect to outside services.

Prepare your own list first and compare any cart an agent proposes against it: in Rappn each item has a starting price, the list an estimated price, and you tick off what you have bought.

What can AI agents do in Switzerland today?

It depends on the level: preparing a list is simple, acting in a browser is documented for some paid tools, and paying directly in the chat is described only for other countries or for selected merchants.
TaskPossible today (vendor pages, 13 October 2026)Limits
Open a website and fill a cartChatGPT Work: cloud browser, in all regions on paid plans other than Free and Go (OpenAI). Claude in Chrome: Chrome extension on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, no country limits listed (Anthropic).ChatGPT asks for confirmation before paying, and some websites block automated agents (OpenAI). Claude in Chrome cannot make purchases (Anthropic). Gemini’s “tasks” are not available in Switzerland (Google).
Pay directly in the chatGoogle: purchases in AI Mode for signed-in adults in the US, in English (one Google Pay page also names Australia). Microsoft: Copilot Checkout, announced for the US on 8 January 2026. OpenAI: Instant Checkout, launched in the US on 29 September 2025 and now offered for some eligible products and merchants, with no country named.None of these pages names Switzerland. The merchant stays the seller; with Google it also handles payment, shipping, returns and customer support.

Features change often: check the vendor’s page before you rely on one.

What are the risks before you let an agent buy?

Four: the payment, the wrong product, hidden instructions and the data the agent sees.

  • The payment. In OpenAI’s protocol the payment request is single-use, with a maximum amount and an expiry. Anthropic rules out purchases for Claude in Chrome whatever permissions you grant (permissions guide, 12 August 2026) but writes that you remain responsible for every action Claude takes in the browser on your behalf; under the Copilot terms (Microsoft), you are solely responsible for the actions you ask Copilot to take.
  • The wrong product. A grocery cart is many small choices: brand, pack size, substitute. Google has you confirm the payment details and shipping address first: read every request and check the items and quantities.
  • Hidden instructions. Anthropic calls instructions hidden in a page (“prompt injection”) the biggest risk of browser-based AI tools and says the risk is not zero; OpenAI warns that page instructions can be misleading or malicious.
  • The data the agent sees. What is visible in the tabs Claude works in becomes part of the conversation (Anthropic). Google and OpenAI ask you not to type passwords or payment details into the chat; more in is ChatGPT safe for personal information.

Checklist: 7 questions before you connect an agent

  1. Does it exist for your country and plan? Some agent features exclude Switzerland: check the vendor’s availability page.
  2. Does it stop before paying? Check that it shows the cart, address and total, then waits for you.
  3. Which payment method, which limit? Set a spending limit if your bank offers one; keep card details and passwords out of the chat.
  4. Who is the seller? Payment, delivery and returns follow its terms, and respecting its rules on automated access stays your responsibility (Anthropic).
  5. What does it see? Close sensitive tabs and use a separate browser profile without access to banking, health or government accounts (Anthropic’s advice).
  6. How do you stop it? Do you know how to revoke permissions? Here is how to set up and remove a connector.
  7. How do you check the result? Compare the cart with your list; keep the order confirmation and the receipt; check your card statement.

Grocery shopping with AI agents: how to get ready

Start at the first level: plan the weekly shop, keep a shared shopping list with your household and keep control of the payment. Rappn, a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview, helps with exactly this task: the list shows an estimated price and, for each item, products with prices by store (prices are indicative); promotions are updated daily as the chains publish them. Rappn covers groceries only, not rent, insurance or taxes. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries: you can join the waitlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a system in which a language model directs its own steps and its use of tools, typically in a loop (Anthropic, 19 December 2024). A chatbot answers with text; an agent acts: it opens pages, compares, and fills in forms or carts.

Can an AI do my grocery shopping in Switzerland?

Partly. An assistant can prepare the list, and on a paid plan ChatGPT Work and Claude in Chrome can work in a browser, but ChatGPT asks before paying and Claude in Chrome cannot make purchases (vendor pages, 13 October 2026). Paying directly in the chat is described mainly for the United States or for selected merchants, and none of these pages names Switzerland.

Is it safe to give an AI agent my card?

Not without precautions: Anthropic writes that the risk of instructions hidden in web pages is not zero, and OpenAI advises treating page content as untrusted. Check that the agent stops before paying, that the amount is capped and that the merchant remains the seller; card details and passwords never belong in the chat.
