How do you add Claude connectors, and what can Claude see?

To add a connector in Claude, open Customize > Connectors, pick a service in the directory, select “Connect” and sign in to the service; then, in each chat, you decide from “+” and “Connectors” whether Claude can use it (Anthropic’s guides, viewed on 14 October 2026). Claude inherits your account’s permissions in the connected service; Anthropic documents custom connectors to remote MCP servers for the Free (one connector only), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. On the Free, Pro and Max plans, Anthropic’s Privacy Center says raw connector content is not part of the data used to improve the models, unless you copy it into the conversation.

With a connector, Claude can reach another service, such as a calendar or a set of documents, to look up information there and, where allowed, act for you. You find it under Customize > Connectors and decide chat by chat whether Claude can use it; Claude inherits your account’s permissions in the service. Custom connectors (remote MCP servers) are available on the Free (one connector only), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (Anthropic, October 2026).

Updated October 2026. Sources: Anthropic, Claude Help Center (connectors, custom connectors, local servers), Claude Docs (getting started, verification), Privacy Center (model training, settings) and Privacy Policy (effective 10 September 2026), all viewed on 14 October 2026.

What are Claude connectors?

A Claude connector is a bridge between Claude and an app or service outside it: through it, Claude searches for information and, where allowed, acts for you. According to Anthropic (October 2026), web connectors are available to all users on the web, in Claude Desktop and in the mobile apps. Each connector in the directory has a page with use cases and read and write capabilities. Once you have connected an app, Claude can suggest it on its own when it fits. For ChatGPT see the guide to ChatGPT connectors.

How do you add a connector, step by step?

As of October 2026, according to Anthropic; menu names vary, so look for the entry “Connectors”.

  1. Open Customize > Connectors on the web or in Claude Desktop.
  2. Browse the directory with the “+” button next to Connectors (the documentation calls it “Discover”) and pick a connector.
  3. Select “Connect” (or “Install”), sign in to the service and check the access it asks for before you approve.
  4. Switch it on in a chat: “+” at the lower left, then “Connectors” and the toggle.
  5. Approve tools: Claude may ask for confirmation before it uses one. You can approve just that once (“Allow once” in the documentation) or choose “Always allow”.

On mobile, installing is in beta; what you connect elsewhere appears in the app at your next login.

Custom connectors and local servers

As of October 2026, you add a custom connector yourself, with the URL of a remote MCP server that is not in the directory (what an MCP server is). On Free, Pro and Max: Customize > Connectors, “+ Add”, “Add custom connector”, then the URL. Claude connects from Anthropic’s cloud, not from your device: the server must be reachable over the public internet from Anthropic’s IP addresses. A local connector is a desktop extension (.mcpb package) that you install in Claude Desktop under Settings > Extensions.
RouteWhere and for whomWhat Anthropic says (October 2026)
DirectoryWeb, desktop and mobile, all usersVerified: tested for quality and compatibility, not a security audit. Community: screened, not reviewed in depth.
Custom (URL)Free (one connector only), Pro, Max, Team, EnterpriseNot reviewed by Anthropic: connect only to servers you trust.
Desktop extension (local server)Claude Desktop and Claude Code onlyRuns on your computer with your permissions: it can access only what you can access.

The protocol’s website warns that an untrusted local server can run commands with the app’s privileges (modelcontextprotocol.io).

Permissions and privacy: what does Claude see?

According to Anthropic, Claude inherits your permissions in the connected service, so a file or channel you cannot open there stays out of the connector’s reach as well. The exception is a custom connector with a shared credential: it reaches everything that credential can open. When you open a connector under Customize > Connectors, you choose, for a group of tools or a single tool, “Always allow”, “Needs approval” or “Blocked”.

When it uses a connector, Claude may send the service your messages, its replies and the instructions for the action; the service handles them under its own privacy policy, and the content retrieved becomes part of your messages, which Anthropic collects. Anthropic writes that it does not control the data practices of third-party services and advises reading their privacy policy (Privacy Policy, 10 September 2026). For people in Switzerland it names Anthropic Ireland, Limited as the data controller.

On the Free, Pro and Max plans, the same policy says your chats may be used to train the models unless you switch off “Help Improve our AI models” under Settings > Privacy (Privacy Center, 3 August 2026); chats flagged for a safety review or sent as feedback can still be used. According to the Privacy Center (16 March 2026), raw connector content, including remote and local MCP servers, is not part of that data unless you copy it into the conversation (guide to personal data).

How do you disconnect and keep control?

As of October 2026, according to Anthropic.

  1. For one conversation: “+”, “Connectors”, toggle off.
  2. To limit tools: under Customize > Connectors, open the connector and set “Blocked” or “Needs approval”.
  3. To sign Claude out of the service: on the connector’s page, choose to disconnect it (in the documentation: Disconnect); it stays in the list.
  4. To take it off: three-dot menu, then “Remove”.

You can also revoke the permissions in the security settings of the connected service.

Groceries and connectors: what is coming

For everyday shopping you often do not need to connect anything: you can paste a short list into the conversation yourself, and the guide to ChatGPT and grocery deals explains how an assistant handles promotions. To see them today there is Rappn, a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview: the promotions are updated daily as the chains publish them, and you can get an alert when a product you follow goes on offer. Rappn covers groceries only, not rent, insurance or taxes. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries: you can join the waitlist. A Rappn connector for AI assistants is in development.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a connector in Claude?

Open Customize > Connectors, browse the directory with the “+” button, pick the connector and select “Connect” or “Install”, then sign in to the service and approve the access it asks for. To use it in a chat, open “+” at the lower left, choose “Connectors” and switch the toggle on. This is the route Anthropic describes (viewed on 14 October 2026); menu names can change.

Which plans include custom connectors?

According to Anthropic’s Help Center (14 October 2026), custom connectors to remote MCP servers are available on the Free (one connector only), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. On Team the owners add them; on Enterprise, so do people with a custom role that includes managing the libraries. Connectors from the directory are open to all users.

Do Claude connectors read all my data?

Not beyond what your account can already open in the connected service: according to Anthropic, Claude inherits each person’s permissions and can only sync content that person is allowed to view. Within that limit, what counts is which tools you allow and whether the connector is switched on in the conversation (14 October 2026).

How do I disconnect a connector?

Open Customize > Connectors, select the connector and choose to disconnect it: Claude signs out of the service and the connector stays in the list. To take it off completely, use the three-dot menu and “Remove”. You can also revoke access in the security settings of the connected service (Anthropic, 14 October 2026).

Will Rappn have a connector?

A Rappn connector for AI assistants is in development. Rappn is also building an AI assistant for groceries: the waitlist is in the section “Groceries and connectors: what is coming”.
