What does a dog or a cat cost per month in Switzerland? Dog tax, registration, insurance and food

According to the Schweizer Tierschutz STS (Swiss animal protection; pages modified in 2026), a dog has estimated running costs of CHF 1'500 to 3'000 a year, depending on its size, and a cat CHF 700 to 2'000; divided by 12 (our calculation), that is CHF 125 to 250 a month for a dog and about CHF 58 to 167 for a cat. These are estimates, not Swiss averages, and dog tax is set by the commune or the canton. Here you find the fixed costs with four official examples, the variable costs and a method for your own monthly figure.

No single figure fits everyone: the cost depends on the animal, its size and your location.

What does a dog or a cat cost per month?

These are STS ranges, not Swiss averages: they cover the running costs of one year, without the purchase, the initial equipment and extraordinary vet bills.

  • Dog: CHF 1'500 to 3'000 a year, or CHF 125 to 250 a month (our calculation): food, accessories, dog tax, liability insurance, routine vaccines and parasite treatments, boarding during holidays.
  • Cat: CHF 700 to 2'000 a year, or about CHF 58 to 167 a month (our calculation): food, vaccines, deworming, parasite treatments, litter.

The dog estimate already contains the tax and the insurance: do not add them again.

Fixed costs: dog tax, registration, insurance

Dog tax is set by the commune (municipality) or the canton (Swiss state) and differs from place to place; registration and insurance depend on the Confederation and the cantons.

Variable costs: food, litter, vet

Start from your invoices of the last year.

  • Food: it depends on the product and the portions; prices are in the guide to pet food prices.
  • Litter: the FSVO requires one litter tray per cat; the running cost is the litter itself, bags a month × price per bag.
  • Vet: the STS counts routine care (vaccines, parasite treatments) in its estimate; extraordinary costs (illness, accident) stay outside and, it warns for dogs, can far exceed the purchase price.

How to work out your own monthly figure

Add up the whole year and divide by 12.

  1. Fixed costs of the year (F): dog tax + liability insurance (+ health insurance, if you have it), from your invoices.
  2. Variable costs of the year (V): food + litter + routine vet + boarding. For food: grams a day on the pack ÷ 1'000 × price per kilo × 365.
  3. Reserve and initial costs (R): the amount you set aside each year for unplanned vet bills + (purchase + initial equipment) ÷ years you expect to keep the animal.
  4. Result: monthly cost = (F + V + R) ÷ 12.

To compare with the STS, use F + V only. Put the fixed items in your fixed costs, for example in the calculator.

Before you take an animal in

According to the STS, a dog costs CHF 600 to 3'000 to buy (origin, breed) and needs CHF 700 to 2'000 in initial costs (accessories, vet costs, courses); a cat CHF 0 to 3'000 to buy and CHF 500 to 600 in initial costs.

For cats the FSVO requires, among other things, raised resting places, hiding places and options for climbing and scratching. For dogs the compulsory national course was abolished on 1 January 2017; some cantons require one: Zurich from 1 June 2025, Ticino from 1 September 2026 (paid by the person who attends).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the dog tax?

It depends on the canton or commune. According to the official pages viewed on 21 October 2026: Basel-Stadt CHF 160 a year in the city of Basel (150 in Riehen, 120 in Bettingen), city of Bern CHF 150, Geneva CHF 50 for the first dog plus the commune’s surcharge and fixed fees (CHF 4 and CHF 1), Ticino CHF 75 to 125, set by the commune.

Is liability insurance compulsory for dogs?

It depends on the canton. According to the canton of Zurich’s page it is compulsory for all dogs, with a minimum cover of CHF 1 million; in Ticino art. 5 of the dog law requires it and the cantonal government sets the minimum amount. For other cantons, ask the cantonal veterinary service.

How much does food for a cat cost?

No official page consulted states a price: it depends on the product and the portions. The STS includes food in its estimate of CHF 700 to 2'000 a year for a cat, together with vaccines, deworming, parasite treatments and litter. For your cat, grams a day on the pack ÷ 1'000 × price per kilo × 365 ÷ 12 gives the francs per month (see the guide to pet food prices).

Is the microchip compulsory?

For dogs yes: they need a microchip implanted by a vet and must be registered in the AMICUS database (FSVO, October 2026). For cats no: the FSVO recommends a microchip and registration, and registration in Anis is voluntary. The pages consulted state no fee.
