Festive Roast Prices in Switzerland: What the Cost per Person Really Depends On

What a festive roast costs per person in Switzerland is decided by the species and the cut, not by the discount. Between pork fillet in pastry, a veal roast and a beef fillet the gap is not measured in percent but in multiples, and it starts long before the shelf: Proviande weekly producer prices valid from Monday 7 September 2026 put class T3 calves at CHF 17.30 per kilo of slaughter weight against CHF 3.20 for slaughter pigs (valid from Friday 4 September 2026). This guide sets out what actually drives the price of a festive roast, when it can be on Aktion at all, and why the whole Christmas turkey is almost always imported. What does a festive roast cost per person in Switzerland?

There is no single figure, for two solid reasons. First, the festive roast is not one product. Coop lists pork fillet in pastry at 800 g and pork fillet in pastry with forcemeat at 1000 g in its online range (coop.ch, product pages, September 2026), and at the meat counter the same idea exists with beef fillet, with veal, or without the forcemeat. That is four price brackets under one name. Second, the price moves with the promotion weeks between October and December.

The comparison only becomes honest per kilo. Federal rules require the base price: for measurable goods whose retail price is calculated according to the quantity sold, the base price per litre, kilogram or metre must be shown (kmu.admin.ch, "Kennzeichnung der Preise"). The francs-per-kilo figure is therefore already on the shelf label, just printed smaller than the pack price. Comparing an 800 g piece with a one-kilo piece otherwise means comparing two different quantities and reading the gap as a price difference.

Why veal costs a multiple of pork

The gap opens long before the shelf. Proviande surveys slaughter livestock prices every week; the values below are valid per proviande.ch from Monday 7 September 2026, and from Friday 4 September 2026 for slaughter pigs. These are producer prices per kilo of slaughter weight, not shelf prices: processing, butchery, margin and VAT come on top. The ranking holds all the same, and it explains why veal and pork never land in the same bracket.

A kilo of veal therefore costs the processor a good five times a kilo of pork, and beef roughly three and a half times. If you want to bring a festive menu down, the strongest lever is the species and the cut rather than the discount: pork fillet in pastry instead of beef fillet in pastry moves the bill more than any December promotion does. When are festive roasts on offer?

On the same weekday as everything else. Migros, Coop and Denner start their weekly Aktionen on Thursday: Coop since the week of 21 January 2025, when the chain moved its price promotions from Tuesday to Thursday (press release via foodaktuell.ch), Migros and Denner since 5 February 2026. Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz run two rounds a week, on Monday and Thursday (aldi-suisse.ch, lidl.ch). Advent changes nothing about that rhythm, it only puts more roasts into the same leaflet.

A crossed-out price deserves a second look. Since 1 January 2025, a comparison price may appear next to the price actually payable only if the goods were offered at that price for at least 30 days beforehand (Art. 16 para. 1 PBV, via kmu.admin.ch). A "was" price is therefore not an invented number. It says nothing, however, about what the same kilo costs this week at another chain, and for a festive roast that is the more expensive question. Christmas turkey in Switzerland: why it is almost always imported

Because almost nobody produces it here. Turkey meat is a niche in Switzerland: 2'145 tonnes of slaughter weight were produced in 2024, 1.8 percent more than in 2023, which is 5.3 percent of the poultry market against 5.6 percent the year before. The domestic share stays under 20 percent, with around 81 percent of the turkey meat consumed being imported (lid.ch, 26 November 2025). More than 90 percent of Swiss turkeys are processed by a single company, Frifag Märwil AG, which stopped producing festive turkeys years ago.

For your shopping that means the whole bird is strictly a seasonal item. Per the same report, Coop sells the vast majority of its whole turkeys in November and December, and Migros describes them as available exclusively for festive occasions such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. If you want a whole turkey, order it ahead rather than hoping for one on 23 December. The rest of the demand sits on breast products: schnitzel, diced meat and steaks.

Why more imported meat sits on the shelf over the festive weeks

Switzerland covers around 80 percent of its meat market from domestic production per proviande.ch; what gets imported is mainly what is missing here, meaning prime cuts, processing beef and poultry products (proviande.ch, retrieved September 2026). The volume is not free: the tariff quota for red meat covers 23'700 tonnes gross per year, the one for white meat 54'500 tonnes gross per year. For beef, 50 percent of the quota shares are auctioned, 40 percent are allocated on slaughter performance and 10 percent on market performance.

In total, the Swiss meat supply came to 469'408 tonnes in 2025, 3.5 percent more than in 2024, again per Proviande. For the festive weeks the mechanism matters more than the total volume: in December a fixed quota meets the highest demand of the year, and it does so on exactly the prime cuts that end up on the festive table. Staying flexible about the cut therefore buys you more room than fixing on one piece.

Pre-order or buy on the day?

Both work, but not equally well. Migros runs an online counter (theke.migros.ch) for pre-ordering meat specialities, Coop keeps its festive pieces in the traiteur range, and the neighbourhood butcher takes orders anyway. If you want a specific piece in a specific size, a beef fillet for six people on 24 December for instance, a pre-order is hard to avoid.

Buying on the day makes sense where the range is broad and the promotion decides: pork roast, chicken, ready-to-bake fillet in pastry from the chilled shelf.
