How do you find forgotten subscriptions, and what do they cost in a year?

Forgotten subscriptions turn up in six places: your card statement, e-banking, eBill, your phone’s app store, the receipts in your e-mail and your phone bill. For each charge, what counts is the yearly cost: monthly amount × 12, quarterly × 4, yearly as it is. Whether a subscription renews automatically depends on the contract; a free trial, for example, can turn into a paid plan if you do not cancel it (Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz, 2026).

Rappn compares the current promotions of 7 Swiss retailers, updated daily: free, no subscription.

Track your groceries in Rappn, free

To find forgotten subscriptions, compare what leaves your account with what you really use: the statements of the last twelve months are enough to start, and five more places complete the picture. Write every charge in a list, work out its yearly cost, and only then decide whether to keep it, pause it or cancel it. The guide promises no amounts: it gives a method.

How do you find forgotten subscriptions?

A forgotten subscription is a recurring charge for a service you no longer use or no longer remember signing up for. Take your statements for the last twelve months, so that the yearly subscription, which shows up only once, appears too, and mark the charges that come back with the same name or amount.

Then make a list, one row per subscription: service, where you pay, amount, how often, yearly cost, next charge, notice period. A spreadsheet or the household budget template is enough: you can track expenses without a bank connection.

Where to look: six places to check

A subscription can come through any channel, so check all six places.

  1. Card statement. Look for charges that come back and for names you do not recognise.
  2. E-banking. Check the standing orders and the direct debit authorisations, under which the issuer of the bill debits your account directly (ebill.ch); where you find them depends on your bank.
  3. eBill. In the portal, check which invoice issuers you are registered with and whether you set up a standing approval, which approves bills automatically under your criteria.
  4. Your phone’s app store. On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions; on Android, open your subscriptions in Google Play. If a subscription is missing, it may be linked to another account.
  5. E-mail. Search your inbox for “receipt”, “invoice”, “renewal” and “free trial”.
  6. Phone bill. The added-value services section can list charges from other providers, for example for SMS/MMS services.

What do they really cost in a year?

The yearly cost is the amount of each charge times the number of times you pay it in a year; divided by 12, it gives the monthly equivalent.
How it is chargedYearly costEquivalent per month
Every weekamount × 52amount × 52 ÷ 12
Every monthamount × 12amount
Every 3 monthsamount × 4amount ÷ 3
Every 6 monthsamount × 2amount ÷ 6
Every yearamountamount ÷ 12

Add up the yearly costs of all your subscriptions: the total divided by 12 is your monthly figure.

Cancel, pause or change plan

Where you cancel depends on where you pay. With a Google Play subscription you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for (Google, October 2026); otherwise the provider’s terms apply.

Phone billYour operator: dispute SMS/MMS services you did not order, in writing and at once, and pay the rest on timeOFCOM, 23 September 2026

On Android some apps let you pause payments for one week to three months from the end of the current period, and a switch between weekly, monthly and yearly plans depends on the developer (Google). Some providers offer family plans: ask who can use and cancel them, because with Apple only the person whose account is on the receipt can cancel a family member’s subscription. Cancel a free trial at least 24 hours before it ends (Apple).

How do you avoid forgetting new ones?

Add every new subscription to the list as soon as you sign up, and go through the list once a year.

  • When you sign up: take a screenshot of the offer, especially if it says “free” (Konsumentenschutz, 9 October 2026).
  • Free trials: put the end date in your calendar with two days to spare.
  • Automatic renewal: search the terms for “cancellation” and “renewed”; if a contract renews by itself, Konsumentenschutz advises cancelling it right at the start for the end of the term, with written confirmation (4 February 2026).
  • Phone: you can ask your operator to block commercial SMS offers (Konsumentenschutz, 9 October 2026).
  • Every year: go through the list with your other fixed costs (reduce fixed costs).

Subscriptions and groceries in your budget

Enter the monthly figure in the subscriptions line of your fixed costs (whole budget: how to make a budget). As a reference, the FSO puts communications (phone, internet, post) at CHF 162 a month per household on average in 2023: an average, not a limit.

For groceries only, you can keep track in Rappn, a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview: you photograph a receipt, upload it from your gallery or enter a purchase by hand, and the app sorts your purchases into categories and shows your spending by month, next to your own monthly average. Rappn does not cover subscriptions, rent, insurance or taxes. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries: you can join the waitlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see all my subscriptions?

Check six places, because a subscription can come through any channel: your card statement, e-banking (standing orders and direct debits), eBill, the subscriptions page of your phone’s app store, the receipts in your e-mail and your phone bill. Then write down each one’s yearly cost: monthly amount × 12, quarterly × 4, yearly as it is.

How do I cancel a subscription I bought in an app?

On an iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, the subscription, Cancel Subscription (Apple help page, 29 September 2026). On Android: your subscriptions in Google Play, the subscription, Cancel subscription; uninstalling the app does not cancel it (Google, October 2026). If you cannot find it, it may be linked to another account or billed by another company: check the receipt or your statements.

Does a subscription renew by itself?

It can, but it depends on the contract: check the term, the notice period and the renewal clause in the terms. According to the Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC), if a contract renews automatically and you miss the date, you can only cancel for the next one, and the amount for the current period is still due (5 June 2025); the Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz considers an automatic renewal acceptable only if the provider informs you explicitly and in good time, before signing and before the renewal (4 February 2026).

Is an annual plan worth it?

It depends on how many months you use the service. Formula: break-even months = yearly price ÷ monthly price; if the result is lower than the number of months you will use the service in the year, the annual plan costs less in total, otherwise the monthly plan does. Also check whether the annual plan renews by itself and what happens if you cancel mid-year.

Does Rappn keep track of my subscriptions?

No: Rappn covers groceries only, not subscriptions, rent, insurance or taxes. You can photograph a receipt, upload it from your gallery or enter a purchase by hand, and the app sorts your purchases into categories and by month. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries: you can join the waitlist.
