Expense tracking without a bank connection: how to do it with your receipts

Yes, you can track expenses in Switzerland without a bank connection: with a notebook or spreadsheet, a budgeting app with manual entry, or your grocery receipts. A receipt shows what you bought, even when you pay cash, which was still 30% of in-person payments in 2025 (Swiss National Bank, Payment Methods Survey, by number of transactions).

Rappn compares the current promotions of 7 Swiss retailers, updated daily: free, no subscription.

You can track your expenses without a bank connection: you record the spending yourself, and no budgeting app gets access to your bank account. Fixed costs go into a template once a month, groceries come from your receipts, everything else goes into one note: that gives you a complete budget, and it shows what you bought, not just where you paid. For comparison, a household in Switzerland spends on average about CHF 638 (Swiss francs) a month on food and non-alcoholic drinks, restaurants not included (Federal Statistical Office, FSO, 2023).

Can you keep a budget without connecting your bank?

Yes, in three ways. The first is a notebook or a spreadsheet: you write down income and spending yourself, ideally in a ready-made template. The second is a budgeting app with manual entry: you type each expense into your phone, the app adds it up and draws the charts, but it never sees your account. The third covers a line that comes back every week and keeps moving, groceries: you keep or photograph your receipts and add them up by category.

Rappn builds the grocery part of your budget from photographed receipts, sorted by category and month, without any access to your bank account.

Why do many people prefer not to link their bank account to an app?

For practical reasons, not out of fear. A bank statement reveals far more than your grocery shopping: salary, rent, health insurance, doctor’s bills, donations, transfers to family. If all you want to know is how much you spend at the supermarket, there is no need to show all that to an outside service.

  • Several banks. Your salary account at one bank, your credit card at another: an app connected to a single bank sees only part of your spending. Swiss law does not require banks to open their data interfaces to other apps: on 12 December 2025 the Federal Council, Switzerland’s government, stayed with its market-based approach and, for now, still imposes no such requirement.
  • Joint and separate accounts. With a joint household account plus a personal account each, a complete picture would mean connecting every account, including your partner’s. Our guide to splitting grocery costs as a couple shows how to share household costs without connecting your accounts.
  • Cash. What you pay in cash does not show up item by item on your statement: all you see there is the withdrawal.

If you wonder whether a budgeting app is safe, check its privacy policy: what data it reads, where it stores it and how you delete it.

What does the bank see, and what does the receipt show?

The bank sees where you paid and how much; the receipt shows what. Expense tracking without a bank connection means you record income and spending yourself, from receipts, bills and statements you read, without giving an app access to your account data. A line on your statement shows the store, the amount and the date, often without the time: it does not tell you whether you bought food, detergent or wine.

Cash is the blind spot of any budget built only on your bank account. In 2025, 30% of payments at checkouts, counters and machines in Switzerland were made in cash (Swiss National Bank, share of transactions). On your statement all that is left of them is the withdrawal, while the receipt records each purchase. To turn receipt lines into categories, follow our guide to analysing your grocery receipts.

Three methods without a bank, compared

None of the three needs your bank: they differ in effort, detail and how much of the budget they cover.

For fixed costs a spreadsheet is enough: our household budget template for Switzerland has separate sheets for income, fixed costs and groceries; Budgetberatung Schweiz, the Swiss budget counselling organisation, also offers free templates in Excel and PDF. For apps that read receipts, see the comparison of receipt-scanning budget apps.

A budget without a bank in 5 steps

  1. Fixed costs, once a month. Rent, health insurance, taxes, transport, phone, other insurance: copy the amounts from contracts and bills into the template. They rarely change, so the real work is in the first month.
  2. Groceries, from your receipts. Keep or photograph every receipt of the week. Two big Swiss supermarket chains print the paper receipt only on request, one since 2022 and the other since 2023 (SRF and Blick, Swiss media): ask for it at the checkout, or use the digital version, as the guide to digital receipts in Switzerland explains.
  3. Other variable spending, in one note. Pharmacy, restaurants, clothes, gifts: one line with date, amount and category. For cash, write down the amount and what it was for on the same day, even without a receipt.
  4. The month-end check. Add up each category and compare it with the previous month: that is where you see whether your grocery line is growing. The monthly spending review shows how to do it in half an hour.
  5. The comparison with a guideline. For food and non-alcoholic drinks, Budgetberatung Schweiz suggests budgeting CHF 370 to 500 a month for a single person, CHF 550 to 700 for a couple and CHF 850 to 1'100 for a family with two children, plus CHF 50 to 100 per child aged 12 or over, depending on net income (budget examples 2025/2026). The full table is in the guide to the grocery budget by household size.

For the whole budget, not just groceries, the 50/30/20 rule adapted to Switzerland splits net income into needs, wants and savings.

Automatic receipts: the part that comes from your loyalty account

Between photographing every receipt and linking your bank there is a middle route: your loyalty account, not your bank account. With Automatic receipts you link the loyalty account of one of three big Swiss supermarkets. You log in on the retailer’s own website inside the app and choose how many months to import: 1, 3, 6 or 12. For two of the three programmes the app then keeps that login session on your phone and fetches new receipts when you open it; for the third you log in again each time you update. Each receipt arrives with its items, prices, discounts, store, date and time. You can unlink the card in the app at any time, and imports stop. You need a Rappn account, and linking a loyalty card is for adults (18+).

Rappn is independent: no supermarket runs, sponsors or endorses it. The programme’s own terms still apply and may not allow access by third parties: the operator can block the link and, in some cases, suspend the loyalty account; an import can be delayed or incomplete; a photo, manual entry or a request for your data from the programme always remain possible.

How to track your groceries with Rappn, starting today

Rappn is a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview. It can take care of the grocery part of your budget. You can take the first step today: photograph this week’s receipts, upload them from your gallery or enter purchases without a receipt by hand. The app sorts your purchases into categories and shows your spending by month, next to your own monthly average; at the end of the month you export the receipts as PDF or CSV and copy the total into your template. Rappn does not connect to your bank account and does not cover rent, insurance or taxes: those stay in the template. There is no subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you keep a budget without connecting your bank account?

Yes, in three ways: a notebook or spreadsheet, a budgeting app where you enter spending yourself, or your receipts for groceries. None of them needs access to your bank account. Budgeting apps that read receipts are described in Rappn’s guide to receipt-scanning budget apps in Switzerland.

What do I lose if I do not connect my bank?

You give up having every card payment or transfer land in your budget on its own: you enter spending yourself, so you need to set aside a regular time each week. In return, no budgeting app sees your account data, and with receipts you know what you bought, not just where you paid.

How do I record cash spending?

Keep the receipt and record it like any other purchase; for small amounts without a receipt, write down the amount and what it was for on the same day. On your statement cash only shows up as a withdrawal, yet in 2025 it was still used for 30% of payments at Swiss checkouts, counters and machines, by number of transactions (Swiss National Bank, Payment Methods Survey of Private Individuals 2025).

Which loyalty cards can I link to Rappn?

With Automatic receipts you link the loyalty account of one of three big Swiss supermarkets: you log in on the retailer’s own website inside the app, choose 1, 3, 6 or 12 months of receipts and can unlink the card at any time; you need a Rappn account and must be an adult (18+).

Does a budget without a bank connection work for couples?

Yes: each of you keeps or photographs your own receipts, and at the end of the month you add them up by category, without connecting the joint account and your personal accounts to an app. How to split the costs fairly afterwards, for example in proportion to income, is explained in Rappn’s guide to splitting grocery costs as a couple in Switzerland.

How do I track groceries with Rappn without giving it bank access?

You photograph the receipt, upload it from your gallery or enter the purchase by hand: the free Rappn app sorts your purchases into categories and shows your spending by month next to your own monthly average, without connecting to your bank account. At the end of the month you export the receipts as PDF or CSV and copy the total into your budget.
