Digital receipts in Switzerland: where to find them, how to export them and how to keep them in one place

The big Swiss supermarkets keep your digital receipt in the loyalty programme, in its app and sometimes the online account, once you scan your card. Retention and export depend on the programme. The two biggest chains print paper receipts only on request, since 2022 and 2023 (SRF, Blick). Download digital receipts and photograph paper ones to keep everything together.

Digital receipts in Switzerland start at the till. When you scan your loyalty card, the supermarket saves an electronic copy of the receipt. You find it in the programme’s app and, where there is one, in the online account. How long a receipt stays and how you export it vary by programme: one states about a year. You add paper receipts with a photo.

Updated October 2026. Sources: help pages and terms of the loyalty programmes of three big Swiss supermarkets; SRF (public broadcaster, 2022 and 2024); Blick (daily newspaper, 2023); Beobachter (consumer magazine, 2024 and 2026); FDPIC; Swiss Code of Obligations (viewed on 8 October 2026).

What is a digital receipt and when do you get one?

A digital receipt, or e-receipt, is the electronic copy of your till receipt that the supermarket stores in your loyalty programme when you scan the programme’s card or app at a staffed till or self-checkout: items, prices, discounts, total, store, date and time. To decode its lines, abbreviations and VAT codes, see how to read a Swiss receipt. Without a scanned card, nothing arrives, as one programme states in its help pages. In the German-speaking part of Switzerland it is a Kassenzettel or Kassenbon, in the French-speaking part a ticket de caisse, in Ticino a scontrino.

The two biggest Swiss supermarket chains print paper receipts only on request, one since March 2022 (SRF, 1 March 2022), the other since autumn 2023 (Blick, 26 October 2023). In the three programmes we checked you can also choose digital-only receipts. You are still entitled to a receipt when you pay (art. 88 of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO). If yours has a mistake, see the guide to receipt errors and your rights. To keep your card on your phone, see the guide to the loyalty card wallet.

This is Rappn’s spending view: photographed receipts are recorded and sorted by category and month, ready to check or export.

Where do you find the digital receipts of the big supermarkets?

You find them in the receipts or purchases section of the loyalty programme’s app and, for some programmes, in the supermarket’s online account.

How do you download or export receipts (PDF and CSV)?

One at a time as a PDF; in bulk only where the programme offers an export by period. The steps to download supermarket receipts work for any programme:

  1. Open the receipts section in the app or, on a computer, in the online account.
  2. Pick the month and check that every purchase where you scanned the card is there.
  3. Save the PDF with download or share, on your phone or in a cloud folder.
  4. Export in bulk where you can: one programme offers a CSV table of purchases or a PDF of all receipts for a period, and any spreadsheet opens the CSV.
  5. Give files sortable names, such as YYYY-MM-DD_store.pdf, with one folder per year.

Three things to know:

  • The window closes. Where a period is stated, it is about a year, so download anything you need for longer. One programme’s terms say that keeping receipts remains your job.
  • A programme’s PDF may not count for VAT. One programme states that its PDF does not entitle you to deduct input tax, the VAT a business can reclaim on its purchases. If you are self-employed, ask for the printed receipt or an invoice (VAT Act, art. 26).
  • The warranty lasts longer. For a blender or an iron, save the PDF straight away; how long to keep it is in the guide to keeping receipts for the warranty.

What about supermarkets that do not give digital receipts?

At those shops you only get the paper slip, as with any purchase without the card. Photograph it the same day: thermal paper reacts to light and plasticisers, and Beobachter (30 April 2026) advises keeping the originals in a paper envelope, away from light. For a readable photo, see the guide on how to scan receipts. For the paper itself, see the guide on receipts, BPA and thermal paper. Some self-checkouts print the receipt anyway, because its barcode opens the exit gate (Beobachter, 3 September 2024).

How do you keep your receipts in one place?

Pick one place for downloaded receipts, photos and online-shop e-mails. Which one depends on the goal: a warranty archive, or knowing how much you spend and on what.
MethodHow receipts get inWhat you seeLimits

For warranties the folder is enough; to know what you really spend you need totals by month and category. See how to analyse grocery receipts. If you prefer not to connect your bank to any app, read the guide to expense tracking without a bank connection.

Importing receipts automatically: how it works

With Automatic receipts you link the loyalty account of one of three big Swiss supermarkets. You log in on the retailer’s own website inside the app and choose how many months to import: 1, 3, 6 or 12. For two of the three programmes the app then keeps that login session on your phone and fetches new receipts when you open it; for the third you log in again each time you update. Each receipt arrives with its items, prices, discounts, store, date and time. You can unlink the card in the app at any time, and imports stop. You need a Rappn account, and linking a loyalty card is for adults (18+).

Rappn is independent: no supermarket runs, sponsors or endorses it. The programme’s own terms still apply and may not allow access by third parties: the operator can block the link and, in some cases, suspend the loyalty account; an import can be delayed or incomplete; a photo, manual entry or a request for your data from the programme always remain possible.

That request is your right of access under art. 25 of the Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), in force since 1 September 2023. It covers your purchases too, is generally free and must be answered within 30 days, according to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).

Before you link a card to an app: 5 questions

They apply to any app that reads the receipts of a loyalty programme:

  1. Who runs it? The company, its registered office and its privacy notice should be easy to find.
  2. Are you asked for the programme’s password? Where do you type it, and what do the programme’s terms say about access by third parties?
  3. What does the app read? Items, prices, store and date are enough to analyse your shopping. Check what else is transferred and how many months you can choose.
  4. How do you disconnect? And do the receipts already read stay, or can you delete them?
  5. Is there an age limit? Linking a loyalty account means accepting the terms of two services; some apps keep it for adults only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download a digital receipt?

Open the receipts section in the loyalty programme’s app or in the online account on the supermarket’s website, pick the receipt and save it as a PDF with the download or share function. For many receipts at once, one programme offers a CSV table or a PDF of all receipts for a period you choose in its online account (October 2026).

Can you print a digital receipt?

Yes: download the receipt as a PDF from the app or the online account and print it like any other document. If you need paper on the spot, ask at the till: at the big Swiss supermarkets a printed receipt is still available on request.

How long do digital receipts stay available?

It depends on the programme: one of the big Swiss supermarkets states about a year for in-store purchases and two years for warranty slips, and for the others we found no published period (as of October 2026). Download the receipts you need for longer, such as those for a warranty claim, as PDFs and keep them yourself.

Does a digital receipt count as proof of purchase for the warranty?

In general yes: according to the SRF consumer programme Kassensturz Espresso (1 February 2024), a digital receipt proves the purchase, and so supports a warranty claim, as do a debit on your card or bank account and the records in your loyalty account. The item and the purchase date must be clearly shown; claims for defects expire two years after delivery (art. 210 of the Swiss Code of Obligations), but the seller can limit the warranty in its terms (art. 199).

Can I still get a paper receipt?

Yes. The two biggest Swiss supermarket chains now print receipts only on request, one since 2022 and the other since 2023, so just ask at the till; you are also entitled to a receipt when you pay (art. 88 of the Swiss Code of Obligations). One programme states that you can still ask for a printed copy if you chose digital-only receipts.

Which loyalty cards can I link to Rappn?

The loyalty programmes of three big Swiss supermarkets: with Automatic receipts you log in on the retailer’s own website inside the app, choose 1, 3, 6 or 12 months of history and can unlink the card at any time; you need a Rappn account and must be 18 or over. Rappn is independent: no supermarket runs, sponsors or endorses it. The programme’s own terms still apply and may not allow access by third parties: the operator can block the link and, in some cases, suspend the loyalty account, and an import can be delayed or incomplete. A photo, manual entry or a request for your data from the programme always remain possible.
