Are Online Grocery Prices the Same as In-Store in Switzerland?

At the Swiss chains that run their own delivery shop, the online product price is officially the same as the shelf price — with exceptions the retailers spell out themselves. Migros states on support.migros.ch (retrieved 3 August 2026) that you get all Migros products online at the same prices as in your Migros store, «except for Aktionen and special offers, which differ from region to region». ALDI now advertises the «usual ALDI price» but adds a footnote that the price shown in the online shop «applies at the time of your order and may differ from the price in the store on the day of delivery» (aldi-now.ch, retrieved 3 August 2026). What actually moves the final bill, therefore, is rarely the product prices: it is the fees stacked on top, and an assortment that is smaller online.

Are online grocery prices the same as in-store prices in Switzerland?

The retailers' official answer is yes — and each time a subordinate clause follows. Migros states the parity and the exception in one breath: the same prices for all Migros products, except for Aktionen and special offers that differ regionally. On a second help page Migros is blunter still: product prices can differ «in particular for regional products, Aktionen and special offers» from region to region, both in the stores and when ordering online.

Coop is most explicit in the FAQ of its Mondovino wine club. There it writes that retail prices are identical in the online shop and in the store. And immediately after, the qualifier: for regional articles, price deviations between the online shop and a Coop store are possible, «because individual stores run a multitude of regional Aktionen every week and these can differ from the Aktionen in the online shop». In the general supermarket FAQ, Coop adds that regional products can only be ordered in areas served by the corresponding logistics centre.

ALDI now describes the underlying mechanism most precisely: the price that counts is the one at the moment of ordering, not the one on the delivery day. That is not small-print trickery, it is a consequence of the process. You order today, delivery arrives tomorrow or the day after, and an Aktion week can end in between. Since 5 February 2026, weekly Aktionen start on Thursday at Migros, Coop and Denner; Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz release offers on Monday and on Thursday. Ordering on a Wednesday for a Friday delivery therefore means ordering straight across a promotion changeover.

What did published Swiss price tests actually find?

The test that asks exactly this question comes from Bon à Savoir. In issue 03-2022 the editorial team compared a basket of food, drinks, cosmetics and stationery at Coop and at Migros, in store and online. The standfirst sums it up: «A Migros, on s'en sort mieux en magasin. Chez Coop, c'était le contraire, lors de notre relevé» — at Migros you did better in store, at Coop it was the other way round at the time of the survey. The freely visible part of the article gives CHF 138.19 for the Migros in-store basket. In other words, the direction of the gap depended on the chain, not on the channel; the remaining figures sit behind the paywall and are not reproduced here.

The second relevant test is the K-Tipp sample of 26 March 2024. In early March 2024 the magazine priced a 40-product basket at Alfies.ch, Aldi-now.ch, Coop.ch and Migros.ch. Headline and standfirst record two things: among the online supermarkets, Coop and Aldi were cheapest, and «what makes shopping in these shops more expensive, though: the cheapest products are often only available in large packs». The article also notes that customers cannot shop online at Denner or Lidl.

Two weeks later, Bon à Savoir (10 April 2024) compared the ordering conditions. At the time: Aldi-now.ch had a CHF 50 minimum and delivery fees of CHF 11.90, then CHF 9.90 from CHF 80 and CHF 6.90 from CHF 100; Coop.ch and Migros.ch had a CHF 99 minimum, a CHF 7.90 fee and CHF 4.90 from CHF 160, and from CHF 200 it was free at Coop against CHF 2.90 at Migros. That last figure shows how fast such data ages: on 3 August 2026, support.migros.ch shows «Gratis» from CHF 200 for Migros Online.

Which fees change what you really pay?

This is where the question is decided in practice. Product prices can be identical and the online order still cost noticeably more — or the reverse, if you would have driven to the store anyway. At ALDI now the point is stated in black and white on the «Einkauf & Lieferung» page: the prices shown exclude the delivery flat rate, the picking fee, the transport-material fee and the floor-delivery fee.

A worked example using the table: on a CHF 100.00 ALDI now basket, the delivery fee (CHF 6.90), the picking fee (2.5%, so CHF 2.50) and the transport material (CHF 1.50) come to CHF 10.90 together — before any floor delivery or same-day slot. And if you are considering a subscription to escape the Migros surcharges, know saldo's arithmetic: per saldo 14/2021 (14 September 2021) the Lieferpass cost CHF 11.90 a month or CHF 118.80 a year, applies only above the minimum order value and renews automatically — which the magazine called a bad deal for anyone who rarely orders large baskets.

Why is the online assortment smaller — and why does that cost money?

Because an identical price is worthless if the product is not there online. Migros writes that the online assortment «is not quite as large as the offering in the stores», while branded goods and alcohol are added. ALDI now offers «a reduced selection of our permanent assortment». Coop explains its quantity limits on soft drinks, beer, milk and cat litter with the payload of its refrigerated vehicles.

That is where the most expensive side effect comes from, the one K-Tipp named in 2024: online, the cheapest products are often only available in large packs. If you want a small pack and only find the big one, you may pay less per kilo but more per shop — and are likelier to throw some away. Bon à Savoir noted in April 2024 that Aldi-now.ch was then delivering the most products in small quantities too. At ALDI now there is one further detail that shifts the maths: for fresh meat, fresh fish and cheese the online listing shows the maximum price, while billing is to the gram based on the weight actually delivered.

Whether online or in-store ends up cheaper for your basket cannot be answered in the abstract — it depends on the chain, on your basket size and on which Aktionen are running this week. What you can know in advance is the promotions: Rappn shows more than 10,000 live offers from seven chains (Migros, Coop, Aldi Suisse, Lidl, Denner, Aligro, Otto's) side by side, with the unit price per kilo or litre so the large-pack trap becomes visible. How can I check this myself in two minutes?

First: take five products you will definitely buy and compare the online price with the shelf price for the same pack size. Look at the unit price per kilo or litre, not the pack price — otherwise you are comparing a 500 g pack with a one-kilo pack.

Second: apply the fees from the table above to a realistic basket. At ALDI now with CHF 100.00 that is roughly CHF 10.90; at coop.ch or Migros Online above CHF 200 both provider pages state zero delivery fee, with a possible load surcharge at Migros Online.

Third: check whether collection is an option. Coop's Pick-up carries no delivery fee per coop.ch, with an order cut-off at 13:30 the day before. That removes the largest cost block without giving up online ordering.

Fourth: mind the promotion changeover. Weekly Aktionen start on Thursday at Migros, Coop and Denner since 5 February 2026, and on Monday and Thursday at Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz. So what does this mean for you? It depends

It depends on the chain. In 2022 Bon à Savoir found two different answers to the same question at two large retailers — the most honest finding available on this topic, and no newer, freely accessible Swiss test has replaced it since.

It depends on basket size. Below CHF 100 a weekly online shop at the two big chains is not even possible because of the minimum order value; between CHF 100 and CHF 200 you pay a delivery fee that weighs heavily in percentage terms on a small basket. And it depends on your life: without a car, with heavy drinks, or shopping with small children, a delivery fee can save you more than it costs.
