Organic Labels Switzerland 2026: Knospe, Demeter and EU-Organic – How Strict Is Each?

Not all organic is equally strict. From strictest to least strict: Demeter (biodynamic) is strictest, then the Bio Suisse Knospe, then EU-organic and the Swiss CH-organic as the legal minimum. The biggest difference: EU-organic lets a farm run only part of its land organically, whereas the Knospe requires the whole farm – plus biodiversity areas and an air-freight ban. Updated: July 2026.

"Organic" does not mean the same thing everywhere. Four tiers shape the Swiss shelf – explained here from strictest to least strict, so you know what you are paying for.

The four tiers compared

Knospe vs EU-organic: the decisive difference

EU-organic and Swiss CH-organic are the legal minimum: no synthetic pesticides, no mineral fertiliser, no genetic engineering – but a farm may run only part of its land organically. The Bio Suisse Knospe goes much further: the whole farm must be organic, at least 7% of the area is ecological-compensation (biodiversity) land, at least 12 targeted measures are mandatory, and air freight is banned (an organically grown but air-flown mango can never carry the Knospe). Processing is also more tightly regulated, and animals have year-round outdoor access with organic feed.

Demeter: the strictest tier

Demeter is biodynamic and builds on the Knospe: in Switzerland every Demeter farm is additionally Knospe-certified. On top come biodynamic rules such as a ban on dehorning and gentler milk processing (no homogenisation, no UHT heating).

Which chain carries which label?

Coop launched the first organic brand in Swiss retail in 1993 with Naturaplan (Knospe throughout). Migros Bio has carried the Knospe on Swiss goods since 2022, but EU-organic on imports. At the discounters, organic runs under own lines (Aldi "retour aux sources", Lidl "Bio Organic") and the EU-organic standard – Aldi additionally checks against the stricter "Prüf Nach!" standard. Denner offers a small EU-organic range under enerBiO.

Stricter does not automatically mean pricier on the shelf – the price depends on chain, origin and promotion. Rappn compares organic prices across all the big chains live and neutrally, so you can find the label you want at the best price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is stricter: the Knospe or EU-organic?

The Bio Suisse Knospe is markedly stricter than EU-organic. EU-organic lets a farm be only partly organic; the Knospe requires the whole farm, at least 7% biodiversity areas, 12 measures, and bans air freight.

What is the difference between Demeter and the Knospe?

Demeter is strictest and builds on the Knospe: in Switzerland every Demeter farm is additionally Knospe-certified and meets biodynamic rules such as the dehorning ban and no homogenisation/UHT.

Does Migros Bio carry the Knospe?

On Swiss goods, yes. On imported organic products, Migros has used the EU-organic standard instead of the Knospe since 2022. Coop Naturaplan applies the Knospe more consistently.

Why don't Aldi and Lidl carry the Knospe?

Aldi and Lidl offer organic under their own lines to the EU-organic standard; Aldi adds the stricter "Prüf Nach!" standard. They do not carry the Knospe.
