Knospe or EU-organic? The decisive difference
This is the question that causes the most confusion in 2026. On Swiss organic products, Migros Bio still carries the Bio Suisse Knospe: the strictest widely-used organic standard in the country. On imported organic products, Migros switched in August 2024 from the Knospe to the EU-organic standard. In practice: a Swiss organic carrot from Migros is Knospe-certified, while an imported organic banana now only meets the EU-organic minimum. Coop Naturaplan applies the Knospe more consistently, that is the main gap between the two.
What about Alnatura?
A common misconception is that Alnatura is a Migros-only brand. It is not, Alnatura is also sold at Volg, migrolino, Müller, Rossmann and Farmy. The standalone Alnatura stores, on the other hand, are gone: Migros Zurich did not renew the franchise agreement and all 25 Alnatura Bio Super Märkte closed by 31 December 2025. Müller took over ten of the sites and Migros kept four as ordinary Migros supermarkets. On Migros shelves the range stays available: up to 380 Alnatura products in around 720 Migros stores and on Migros Online (as of December 2025).
What does Migros Bio cost?
Organic costs more, and how much more depends on the benchmark: versus conventional standard goods the premium is clear; versus budget lines (M-Budget, Prix Garantie) it is larger still. Among the chains, Migros Bio sits mid-field, similar to Coop, but pricier than the discounters: at Aldi and Lidl, organic is up to about 25% cheaper (source: Tagesanzeiger). One reason: the Knospe carries licence fees that the discounters partly avoid.
