Does AI understand Swiss German, spoken and written?
It depends on the tool and the dialect: the vendor pages read on 21 October 2026 list languages and regional variants, not Swiss German, while Swiss research studies it with recording collections such as STT4SG-350, 343 hours of speech from seven dialect regions with Standard German text (FHNW, ZHAW and University of Zurich, 2023 preprint). According to the SDS-200 (2022) and STT4SG-350 papers, the target text for spoken dialect is usually Standard German, because without a spelling standard, dialect text is hard to process. Apertus, the open model from ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS released on 2 September 2025, names Swiss German among its languages.

The vendor pages cited in the sources list languages and regional variants, such as Apple’s “German (Switzerland)”, but none names Swiss German or dialects. Swiss institutions, by contrast, publish collections of dialect recordings (FHNW, ZHAW and University of Zurich, 2022 and 2023) and an open model that includes it among its languages (ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS, 2025).

Does AI understand Swiss German?
Swiss German is a group of dialects: it is mainly spoken and mostly written in informal messages, while formal letters, laws and newspapers use Standard German, also called High German (FHNW, ZHAW and University of Zurich, 2023). Among the hurdles for an AI system, researchers point out that the dialects differ from one another and that there is no standard spelling, so the same word is written in many ways. The honest answer is therefore “it depends”: try one short sentence and always check the result.

Speaking: speech recognition and dialects
According to the SDS-200 (2022) and STT4SG-350 (preprint, 2023) papers, speech recognition for Swiss German usually aims at Standard German text, not dialect text. The three vendors below document languages and settings, not dialects (pages viewed on 21 October 2026, in alphabetical order):
- Apple. Lists Siri for Switzerland in French, German and Italian, and dictation as “French (Switzerland)”, “German (Switzerland)” and “Italian (Switzerland)” (iOS 27).
- Google. For the Gemini app on Android the page names German, French and Italian, without regional variants, and lists Switzerland among the countries.
- OpenAI. Writes that the language you speak may not be detected accurately and advises choosing your preferred language in the voice settings; voice transcripts are not verbatim.
To dictate a list in the different assistants see the voice shopping list guide; for the recordings, ChatGPT and personal data and data promises.
Writing: chatbots and Swiss German
A chatbot works on text, and dialect text has no fixed spelling: the authors of STT4SG-350 (2023) note that without a spelling standard each word has many written variants and automatic processing gets harder. So results can differ from one tool to another and from one dialect to another; we report no tests of our own.
What the vendors document (alphabetical order): Anthropic writes that performance varies by language, advises testing the languages you need and stating the input and response languages; the page does not mention dialects. On its language-setting page, OpenAI lists German, French and Italian among ChatGPT’s languages, not Swiss German, and does not say how the model handles dialects.
Swiss research and models
| Project | Who | What it is | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apertus | ETH Zurich, EPFL, CSCS (Swiss AI Initiative) | Open language model (8 and 70 billion parameters) trained on more than 1'000 languages; names Swiss German and Romansh | 2 September 2025 (release) |
| Apertus 1.5 | ETH Zurich, EPFL, CSCS (Swiss AI Initiative) | Version under the Apache 2.0 licence that also understands images and audio; the pages name no languages | 24 July 2026 (release) |
| SDS-200 | FHNW, ZHAW, SpinningBytes AG | 200 hours of dialect speech from about 4'000 people, with Standard German text | June 2022 (paper) |
| STT4SG-350 | FHNW, ZHAW, University of Zurich | 343 hours of speech from all 7 dialect regions, 316 people, with Standard German text | 30 May 2023 (preprint) |

For groceries: practical tips
Five steps for dictating or writing the list with an assistant:
- Pick the languages. Set the language you speak most often in the assistant, as OpenAI suggests, and state the language of the reply, as Anthropic advises.
- Dictate item by item. Clear product names, one at a time, somewhere quiet: according to OpenAI, overlapping voices, background noise and microphone settings can affect what ChatGPT hears.
- Re-read before you save. OpenAI notes that voice transcripts are not verbatim; with ChatGPT dictation you can edit the text before sending it.
- Check brands and quantities. A mangled brand or a wrong number leads to the wrong product.
- Write the prices. A general assistant cannot see your store’s prices (AI grocery list): compare them with this week’s promotions.
Groceries and dialect: what to do today
The first step: dictate or write the list, then read it back in writing and correct it before you leave.
For the prices a dictated list does not contain, you can use Rappn, a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview. You write the items into the app’s list: it shows an estimated price for the whole list and, for each item, products with prices by store; prices are indicative. The promotions are updated daily as the chains publish them. Rappn covers groceries only, not rent, insurance or taxes. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries: you can join the waitlist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT understand Swiss German?
On its language-setting page, OpenAI lists German, French and Italian among ChatGPT’s languages and does not name Swiss German (page viewed on 21 October 2026). The page does not say how the model handles dialects, and OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can make mistakes: re-read the text; in the voice settings you can choose the language you speak.
Does Siri understand Swiss German?
Apple lists Siri for Switzerland in French, German and Italian and dictation as “German (Switzerland)” (iOS 27, page viewed on 21 October 2026). The list names neither Swiss German nor dialects and does not say whether “German (Switzerland)” covers dialect: try one short sentence and check the text.
Is there a Swiss artificial intelligence?
There is Apertus, an open language model from ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS, released on 2 September 2025 and followed by version 1.5 on 24 July 2026 (the institutions’ pages). The first version names Swiss German among its training languages; the pages for 1.5 name no languages.
Can I dictate my shopping list in dialect?
You can try, but the vendor pages we read do not document dialect support: set the language, dictate short items and re-read the text before saving it. How it works in the different assistants is in the voice shopping list guide.
Will Rappn understand Swiss German?
That is not announced. Rappn is building an AI assistant for groceries; the waitlist is in the section “Groceries and dialect: what to do today”.
