Switzerland vs US and UK Grocery Prices: What the Official Numbers Actually Show
Eurostat puts Switzerland at 155.9 for food and non-alcoholic beverages in 2025, with the EU average at 100. There is no equally official figure for the United States or the United Kingdom, because that survey covers only the EU, EFTA and candidate countries. This page gives the index, the categories with the biggest Swiss premium, and item prices from the BLS and the ONS, with no currency-conversion sleight of hand.

Switzerland has the highest food price level in Eurostat's price level survey, but only just. For food and non-alcoholic beverages in reference year 2025 Switzerland sits at 155.9 against an EU average of 100 — essentially level with Iceland (155.8), clearly above Norway (133.1), above Luxembourg (122.4) as the priciest EU country, and well above Germany (102.4). What does not exist is an equally official Switzerland-versus-United-States number: the Eurostat survey covers the EU, EFTA and candidate countries, so neither the US nor the UK is in it. That means the honest comparison has to be assembled from two different things — the exchange-rate-free index above, and item prices published separately by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the UK Office for National Statistics.

How expensive is Switzerland compared to the US and the UK?
Start with the measure that does not depend on the exchange rate on the day you look. Eurostat's price level index compares what the same basket costs across countries using purchasing power parities, with the EU average fixed at 100. For food and non-alcoholic beverages in 2025 the picture looks like this.
| Country | Food and non-alcoholic beverages, price level index (EU27 = 100), 2025 |
|---|---|
| Switzerland | 155.9 |
| Iceland | 155.8 |
| Norway | 133.1 |
| Luxembourg | 122.4 |
| Austria | 109.5 |
| France | 106.8 |
| Germany | 102.4 |
| Italy | 101.1 |
| EU average | 100 |
| Romania | 79.8 |
| United States / United Kingdom | not covered by this survey |
The last row is the one most articles skip. Eurostat runs this survey with the EU Member States, the EFTA countries and the candidate countries — 36 in total, per its own Statistics Explained pages of 17 June 2026. The United States and the United Kingdom are not among them, so no institution publishes a "Switzerland is X percent more expensive than the US for groceries" figure on this method. Anyone who quotes one is either converting currencies on a single day or using a crowdsourced index.
Which groceries carry the biggest Swiss premium?
The average hides enormous spread, and this is the part that actually changes your shopping. Within the same Eurostat pull for 2025, Switzerland's food categories sit anywhere from just over the EU line to more than double it.
| Category | Switzerland, price level index (EU27 = 100), 2025 | What it means for a newcomer |
|---|---|---|
| Live animals, meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals | 219.0 | The single biggest gap. Meat is where a US or UK shopping habit gets expensive fastest. |
| Cereals and cereal products | 159.8 | Bread, pasta, flour and breakfast cereals sit near the overall food average. |
| Milk, other dairy products and eggs | 144.0 | High, but noticeably below meat — worth knowing before you cut dairy from the list. |
| Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses | 137.9 | The gap narrows. |
| Fruits and nuts | 122.2 | The mildest of the big food groups. |
| Food and non-alcoholic beverages, total | 155.9 | The headline number. |
Read together, those rows say something practical: the "Switzerland is expensive" shock is concentrated in the meat counter far more than in the produce aisle. A household that moves from a meat-heavy US weekly shop to a Swiss one feels a much bigger jump than a household that mostly buys fruit, vegetables and pantry staples.
What do milk, eggs, bread and butter cost in the US and the UK?
For the countries Eurostat does not cover, the closest thing to an official answer is each country's own statistical office. Both publish average retail prices, but on different calendars and in different units, so the table below shows each figure in the unit its source uses, with our conversion in brackets.
| Item | United States, US city average (BLS, June 2026) | United Kingdom (ONS RPI average prices, last observation January 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Milk, whole | USD 4.317 per gallon (about USD 1.14 per litre) | 65.0 pence per pint of pasteurised milk (about GBP 1.14 per litre) |
| Eggs | USD 2.141 per dozen, grade A large | 331 pence per dozen |
| Bread, white | USD 1.814 per lb (about USD 4.00 per kilo) | 140 pence for a sliced 800 g loaf (about GBP 1.75 per kilo) |
| Butter | USD 3.816 per lb, stick (about USD 2.10 per 250 g) | 243 pence per 250 g block |
| Potatoes, white | USD 0.923 per lb (about USD 2.04 per kilo) | not used here |
Two caveats you should hold on to. First, the ONS RPI average price series above stop in January 2025 even though the dataset itself was re-released on 22 July 2026, so the UK column is older than the US column and should not be read as today's shelf price. Second, we deliberately print no converted CHF figure next to these. A single-day exchange rate would decide the answer, and that is exactly the sleight of hand that makes most "Switzerland vs America" comparisons unreliable.
On the Swiss side, the one item price we can cite from an official source at the same level of detail is eggs. The BLW Agrarbericht 2025 records Swiss retail consumer prices for 2024 of 40.23 centimes for a raw Swiss barn egg, down 0.36 centimes on the year, and 62.66 centimes for a raw Swiss free-range egg, up 0.63 centimes. Twelve barn eggs therefore worked out at about CHF 4.83 on those 2024 figures, by our own arithmetic.
Do Swiss wages cancel out the higher grocery prices?
Partly, and only partly. Eurostat also publishes a volume index of real expenditure per head — what households actually consume once price differences are stripped out. For actual individual consumption in 2025 Switzerland stands at 114 with the EU average at 100. So Swiss households do consume more in real terms than the EU average, but by roughly 14 percent, while paying about 56 percent more for food. That is the honest shape of it: higher incomes soften the food bill, they do not erase it.
We will not extend that calculation to the United States or the United Kingdom, because the same index does not cover them and stitching together wage data from three statistical systems would produce a number that looks precise and is not.
What should I budget for groceries when I move to Switzerland?
It depends, and the honest answer is that it depends on things no index can see: how much meat you buy, which canton you land in, whether you shop the weekly promotions or the standard shelf price, and how far you live from a discounter. The indices above tell you the size of the country-level gap. They cannot tell you what this week costs where you actually live. That part you can see live: Rappn shows more than 10,000 current offers from seven Swiss chains side by side, in four languages, with unit prices so you can compare a 500 g pack against a 750 g one, and it is free.
Two habits do most of the work in the first month. The first is timing. Since 5 February 2026 Migros, Coop and Denner all start their weekly Aktionen on Thursday, while Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz drop offers on Monday and Thursday. Planning the big shop around Thursday rather than Saturday changes what is on promotion when you walk in. The second is substitution by category: given the 219.0 meat index against 122.2 for fruits and nuts, shifting even a couple of meals a week away from meat moves your bill more than switching chains does.
| Chain | New weekly Aktionen start | Second offer day in the week | Live offers in Rappn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Migros | Thursday (since 5 February 2026) | — | Yes |
| Coop | Thursday (since 5 February 2026) | — | Yes |
| Denner | Thursday (since 5 February 2026) | — | Yes |
| Aldi Suisse | Thursday | Monday | Yes |
| Lidl Schweiz | Thursday | Monday | Yes |
| Aligro | — | — | Yes |
| Otto's | — | — | Yes |
So how should you use these numbers?
Use the Eurostat index for the decision you make once — whether the move works financially, and how much more to allow for food than you allow at home. Use the BLS and ONS series to sanity-check what you remember paying, rather than trusting your memory of a shop you last did months ago. And use live offers for the decision you make every week, because that is the only level at which the gap is actually negotiable.
If you want the neighbouring-country context as well, our page on Switzerland's price level versus its neighbours goes through the EU comparison in detail, grocery inflation in Switzerland in 2026 covers how the numbers are moving, and grocery shopping in Switzerland for visitors is the short version for a two-week stay.
Next step: before your first big Swiss shop, set price alerts in Rappn on the ten things you buy every week — the coffee, the milk, the pasta, the washing powder. You will learn the local price of your own basket in about three weeks, which is faster than any index can teach you. Rappn is free and is not paid by any chain.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much more expensive are groceries in Switzerland than in the EU?
In Eurostat's price level index for food and non-alcoholic beverages, Switzerland stands at 155.9 for the reference year 2025 against an EU average of 100, so about 56 percent higher. For context from the same survey: Iceland 155.8, essentially level with Switzerland, Norway 133.1, Luxembourg 122.4, Austria 109.5, France 106.8, Germany 102.4, Italy 101.1 and Romania 79.8.
Is there an official Switzerland vs US grocery price comparison?
No. Per Eurostat's Statistics Explained pages with data of 17 June 2026, the price level survey covers the EU Member States, the EFTA countries and the candidate countries, 36 in total. The United States and the United Kingdom are not among them, so no official percentage exists on that method. What is comparable is each country's own average price data, and those come in different currencies, units and reference periods.
Which groceries are most expensive in Switzerland compared with Europe?
Meat. In the Eurostat breakdown for 2025, Switzerland is at 219.0 for "live animals, meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals" against an EU average of 100. Cereals and cereal products follow at 159.8, milk, other dairy products and eggs at 144.0, vegetables and pulses at 137.9, and fruits and nuts at 122.2.
What do milk, eggs and bread cost in the US right now?
Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Average Price Data for the U.S. city average, June 2026 observation: whole milk USD 4.317 per gallon, grade A large eggs USD 2.141 per dozen, white bread USD 1.814 per pound and butter USD 3.816 per pound. Converted to metric that is about USD 1.14 per litre of milk and about USD 4.00 per kilo of bread; the conversion is ours, not the BLS's.
What do groceries cost in the UK for comparison?
The ONS RPI average price series, dataset MM23 released on 22 July 2026, end at January 2025. At that last observation: pasteurised milk 65.0 pence per pint, eggs 331 pence per dozen, a sliced 800 g white loaf 140 pence and a 250 g block of butter 243 pence. Because those figures are older than the US series quoted here, they should be read as a reference point rather than a current shelf price.
Do Swiss salaries make up for the higher grocery prices?
Only partly. Eurostat's volume index of real expenditure per capita for actual individual consumption puts Switzerland at 114 in 2025 with the EU average at 100. Real consumption is therefore about 14 percent above the EU average while food price levels are about 56 percent above it. That index does not cover the United States or the United Kingdom, so we make no claim about them.
