Three apps for the weekly shop: can one app do all of it?

Three apps for the deals, the shopping list and the card, when all of it fits in one: we hear that sentence often. Rappn puts the three jobs together. Deals, shopping list and loyalty cards in one app: what changes in the store

At the shelf it is a matter of seconds, not of feature lists. You are standing at the chiller, you want to know whether the item really is on offer this week, you want to tick it off, and at the till the card should be ready. If those three steps live in three apps, you switch screens three times, and the card comes out exactly when the person behind you is already unloading onto the belt. Put them together and it stays one surface: search, list and wallet in the same place.

Rappn is neither a till nor a shop. You pay at the checkout as always, there is no ordering and no delivery, and it does not manage your points. The app covers the three steps before that: see what is on offer, note what you need, and have the card ready.

Why do the deals, the list and the card sit in separate apps?

Because every chain builds its own surface and shows its own range inside it. That makes sense for the chain, and it turns awkward for you the moment you shop at more than one. According to our loyalty wallet guide, a Swiss household carries four to five loyalty cards on average, and the offers that concern you are spread across several chains. A neutral app has the opposite job: not to go deeper into one range, but to put the chains side by side. Which chain starts its weekly offers on which day?

At the large chains the prices change on Thursday, and in Rappn you see them live the same day, without leafing through flyers. Shop on a Monday and you meet the Monday cycle at Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz, not the Thursday round.

What does Rappn do, and what does it not do?

The wallet part needs one caveat: Rappn shows the barcode or QR code of your card on the screen. Whether a given till reads that code off a display depends on the scanner in that store, and we do not promise it across the board. At Aldi, Denner and Otto’s there is no loyalty programme at all, according to our wallet guide, so there is nothing to carry.

What does the weekly shop look like with one app?

Four steps, from Thursday morning to the till. One: open the offers, set your canton, read the seven chains side by side. Two: search a product and read the price per kilo, litre or piece, because the percentage on the label says nothing about how much is in the pack. Do you have to delete the chain apps?

No, and that is not our advice. Some things still live only with the chain in question, such as personalised vouchers or the points balance, and Rappn carries neither. Is one app worth it for the way you shop?
