Chips & Snacks Prices in Switzerland: Where to Buy in 2026
Zweifel Chips & Snacks AG (Spreitenbach, 100 % family-owned, 3rd gen) makes ~80 million bags / year — 9 per Swiss resident. CHF 315.5M revenue 2025, 250 named Swiss potato farmers, Swiss rapeseed oil since 2018. Zweifel REFUSES to supply Aldi / Lidl. Some Zweifel chips at Migros are actually co-produced by Bischofszell under the 2002 license deal. Lidl Snack Day, Coop Prix Garantie, Aldi Snack-Fun and Chio all come from the same Kelly's factory in Vienna. Wait 4-6 weeks for the Aktion cycle and the gap halves.

Is Zweifel really worth the price premium? Zweifel paprika chips typically cost about 30 per cent more than the equivalent Migros M-Classic or Coop bag of the same size. Migros Magazin ran the comparison in February 2025 and printed CHF 5.95 against CHF 4.60. Taste tests are mixed; brand loyalty in Swiss-German Switzerland is strong; the bigger story is that Bischofszell, Migros's own industrial bakery, actually produces some of the Zweifel chips sold in Migros stores under license, using Zweifel's recipe and Zweifel-supplied spice mixes. So the practical answer is: pay the premium when you specifically want Zweifel, watch for the regular Aktion cycle to halve the gap, and reach for M-Classic or Prix Garantie when you just want chips.

Zweifel, the Swiss chip institution (Spreitenbach, family-owned)
Zweifel Chips & Snacks AG, renamed from "Zweifel Pomy-Chips AG" in September 2024, is the Swiss chip business. One hundred per cent family-owned, third generation, headed by Christoph Zweifel since May 2020 (the first family member to lead the company in 29 years). Production is in Spreitenbach, canton Aargau, where Zweifel runs a single factory that processes 22'000 to 27'000 tonnes of potatoes a year into roughly 10'000 tonnes of chips and snacks, packaged in around 80 million bags annually. At a Swiss population of around 9.1 million, that is roughly nine bags of Zweifel per person per year. We are a chip nation that pretends not to be.
Other Zweifel facts that explain the brand premium: 90 to 95 per cent of potatoes are Swiss, sourced from about 250 named farmers whose names are printed on the bags. Frying oil switched from sunflower to Swiss rapeseed oil in 2018. Paprika chips, the bestseller, have been in the range since 1964. Revenue 2025 reached CHF 315.5 million, the tenth consecutive record. A CHF 40 million new Snackwerk in Spreitenbach is under construction, with production starting spring 2027.
Zweifel does not supply Aldi or Lidl. Both discounters have publicly asked for years. Aldi told SonntagsBlick: "We have been trying for years to be able to offer our customers Zweifel chips. So far, unfortunately, it has not worked." Lidl confirmed similar interest. Zweifel has held its line. So if you want Zweifel, you are buying at Migros, Coop, Denner or a small shop.

K-Tipp documented in March 2022 that a single producer often stands behind multiple aisle bags: Kelly's in Vienna, an Intersnack subsidiary, supplies Chio (the branded line), Lidl's Snack Day, Coop Prix Garantie, and historically Aldi's Snack-Fun chips. Different bags, same factory floor in many cases. So the question is rarely "is this chip good" (it is, technically) and more often "do I prefer the Zweifel-Swiss recipe with Swiss potatoes, or a perfectly serviceable EU-produced chip at half the price."
Salty snacks beyond chips (Kambly, pretzels, crackers, nuts)
The Swiss snack aisle is not just chips. The other heritage name is Kambly, the biscuit and salty-snack maker based in Trubschachen, canton Bern. Founded in 1910 by Oscar R. Kambly and now in the fourth generation: Dania Kambly has been chairwoman since May 2024, and her husband Nils Kambly has been CEO since June 2020. Kambly is also family-owned, exports to over 50 countries, supplies the Swiss Military biscuits (since 1959, available to civilians since 2010), and on the salty side distributes Cornu SA's Recette De Champagne range.
For pretzels and Salzstangen, expect mostly German and Austrian imports across all retailers, with narrow price gaps. For salted nuts, Intersnack Group has been the active challenger to Zweifel in Switzerland since 1994, primarily through specialty nut mixes.
Branded vs private label: does taste actually differ?
Where the supplier is the same, the recipe is often calibrated differently. Kelly's Vienna confirmed (via K-Tipp 2022) that Snack Day chips at Lidl are less salty than the Chio brand from the same factory, and cost about half as much. That is a deliberate brand-tiering choice, not a quality fault.
Where Zweifel is the supplier (most of its own products) the difference is not the chip itself but the supply chain: Swiss-grown potatoes, Swiss rapeseed oil, traceable farmer names on the bag, and the rotating innovation line (Cractiv, Vaya, Wave, Joy plant-based snacks).
Where M-Classic chips come from depends on the SKU. The Swissness ones (like Beef Chips, made from Swiss beef) are produced inside Migros's M-Industrie / Fresh Food & Beverage Group. The Zweifel-branded chips on the Migros shelf are co-produced under the 2002 license deal between Bischofszell and Zweifel. So in a Migros chip aisle you may be holding three bags, all from related production lines, at three different price tiers.
Aktion timing and multi-pack math
Three rules from working through the Aktion calendar in Switzerland:
- Branded chips cycle through Aktion every 4 to 6 weeks. Zweifel at full price is around CHF 5.50 to CHF 5.95 for a large bag; on Aktion that falls to CHF 3.95 to CHF 4.50. If you are not in a hurry, wait.
- Multi-packs are not automatically cheaper per gram. Compare unit prices (CHF per 100 g). Coop and Migros multi-pack family bags can be cheaper; multi-pack snack-size assortments often are not.
- Private label rarely goes on Aktion because the everyday price is already low. Do not wait. Buy when you need them.
Apéro-specific snacks
Chips, salted peanuts, olives, dried sausage and Bretzeli are the spine of a Swiss apéro. A six-person apéro typically needs 200 to 300 g of chips per person, so two large bags. At Aktion prices for Zweifel paprika that is around CHF 8 to CHF 9 for the chip portion alone. Private-label brings the same portion to CHF 4 to CHF 5. Brand visibility on the apéro table is a real signal in Switzerland; many Swiss hosts buy Zweifel for guests and M-Classic for the family. For the full apéro cost calculation, see Swiss apéro cost for 6 people, and pair the snack run with chocolate prices and wine + spirits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zweifel really worth the price premium?
For roughly a 30 per cent premium over M-Classic and Prix Garantie, you get Swiss-grown potatoes from 250 named farmers, Swiss rapeseed oil, and the country's flagship snack brand. Taste-test results are mixed; brand loyalty in Swiss-German Switzerland is strong. Reasonable answer: pay the premium when you want Zweifel specifically, time the regular Aktion to halve the gap, and reach for private label when you just want a bowl of chips.
Are M-Classic chips made by Zweifel?
Some of them, indirectly. Since the 2002 deal that let Zweifel into Migros stores, Bischofszell (Migros's M-Industrie food company, since June 2023 part of the Fresh Food & Beverage Group) has co-produced certain Zweifel-branded chips for the Migros channel using Zweifel's recipe and Zweifel-supplied spice mixes. Plain M-Classic chips are Migros own-brand, not Zweifel. Swissness-flagged M-Classic items like Beef Chips are made in Switzerland by M-Industrie.
Where can I buy Pringles cheapest in Switzerland?
Pringles is brand-only with no private-label clone in Switzerland. Prices are similar across Migros, Coop, Lidl, Aldi and Denner at full price, but the Aktion calendar at Lidl and Aldi tends to bring Pringles below the standard supermarket level several times a year.
Are Lidl and Aldi private-label chips actually decent?
Yes. K-Tipp documented in 2022 that Lidl's Snack Day chips, Coop Prix Garantie chips, Aldi's Snack-Fun chips and the branded Chio chips all come from the same Kelly's factory in Vienna, an Intersnack subsidiary. The recipes are calibrated slightly differently (Snack Day is less salty than Chio), and the private labels sell at roughly half the brand price. Quality is genuinely comparable.
When do supermarkets put chips on Aktion?
Branded chips, especially Zweifel and Pringles, cycle through Aktion every 4 to 6 weeks at Migros, Coop and Denner. Lidl and Aldi run weekly thematic flyers where chips can hit lower price points around weekends, sporting events (Euro, World Cup, hockey season) and grilling-season weekends.
Why does Zweifel not sell at Aldi or Lidl?
Aldi and Lidl have both publicly stated for years that they would like to carry Zweifel and Zweifel has consistently said no. The current Zweifel positioning is that brand integrity at Migros, Coop, Denner and the long-tail of small shops is more valuable than discounter distribution. Aldi told SonntagsBlick: "We have been trying for years to be able to offer our customers Zweifel chips. So far, unfortunately, it has not worked."
