Weekend grocery deals in Switzerland: Wochenend-Knaller, Weekend Hits and Super Wochenende explained

Four of Switzerland's seven big grocery chains run explicit weekend formats: Migros and Denner with their Wochenend-Knaller from Thursday to Sunday, Coop with its Weekend Hits from Thursday to Sunday, and Lidl with the Super Wochenende, which starts Thursday or Friday depending on the week. Rappn shows every weekend offer currently valid, live and filterable by canton.

Which Swiss chains run real weekend-only deals?

Weekend deals are short-lived discounts that run for a few days around the weekend, on top of the normal promotion week. Four chains use a clearly named format of their own, while the others cover the weekend through their regular weekly cycle:

ChainWeekend formatValidGood to know

DennerWochenend-KnallerThursday to SundayFour days instead of two since 5 February 2026, previously Friday and Saturday only (source: Denner press release)
CoopWeekend Hits (Wochenend-Hits)Thursday to SundayPlus short-lived Super-Wochenende and Hammer prices (source: Coop press release, foodaktuell.ch)
LidlSuper Wochenendeuntil Sunday, starting Thursday or Friday depending on the weekEach round gets its own flyer pages (per lidl.ch)
Aldi Suisseno separate weekend labelrounds from Monday and ThursdayThe Thursday round covers the weekend (per aldi-suisse.ch)
Aligrono separate weekend dealspromotion week Monday to SaturdaySaturday is the last validity day of the week (per aligro.ch)
Otto'sweekly hits with no fixed end datewhile stocks lastOn the weekend, whatever is still in stock is still on offer (per ottos.ch)

A Knaller sticker is advertising, not a price verdict. Whether the advertised weekend price really is the best in your region only becomes clear when you compare across chains, because the same pack of chicken can be on promotion at two chains during the same weekend. That cross-check is exactly what Rappn does.

Since February 2026, the deal weekend starts on Thursday

Coop moved its promotion week to Thursday through Wednesday back in January 2025 (source: Coop press release, foodaktuell.ch). Migros and Denner followed on 5 February 2026. Denner used the switch to extend its Wochenend-Knaller from two to four days, now Thursday to Sunday instead of Friday and Saturday, explicitly citing better product availability on weekends as the goal (source: Denner press release). At Migros the Wochenend-Knaller kept running Thursday to Sunday, unchanged (source: Migros press release).

The logic is the same everywhere: the biggest shopping trips increasingly happen on weekends, so the promo goods should be on the shelf exactly then. In practice this means the full weekend range is unlocked from Thursday, and shopping on Thursday or Friday gives you the best pick of popular fresh deals before the Saturday rush.

For what is valid today, weekday by weekday, see the guide to grocery deals today in Switzerland. For recurring discount patterns across the year, see the Swiss supermarket promotion calendar.

Meat and fresh food: what dominates weekend promos

No chain guarantees a fixed assortment pattern, but the direction is clear: weekend formats lean heavily towards fresh products. At Coop the Weekend Hits often cover meat, fruit and vegetables, and the Wochenend-Knaller at Migros and Denner also frequently feature meat, poultry and fish for the weekend dinner or the grill. The reason is obvious: short-shelf-life goods should be in store exactly when most cooking happens.

Meat is where the cross-chain comparison pays off most, because several chains run parallel weekend promotions on similar products. If you are specifically after meat deals, filter Rappn by the meat category and you see the current weekend offers of all seven chains side by side, including price per kilo. For how the Denner cycle works in detail, see the guide to Denner deals this week.

Saturday timing and the Sunday shutdown

Saturday is the big shopping day for most households, but it ends earlier than newcomers expect: most Swiss supermarkets close between 16:00 and 18:00 on Saturdays depending on the location, bigger city-centre branches often until 20:00, and small village shops sometimes earlier. Shopping in the morning gives you the best pick of fresh weekend deals. Towards closing time your chances of short-dated fresh items being marked down rise, but that is never guaranteed.

On Sunday, nearly all supermarkets are closed. Standalone branches of Aldi, Lidl, Denner, Aligro and Otto's generally stay shut, and what remains open are essentially the train station and airport branches of Migros and Coop plus convenience formats, with a few exceptions such as Ticino and tourist zones. So the weekend deals that formally run until Sunday are mostly usable on Sunday at station branches, where the normal chain prices generally apply. If you moved here from a country with Sunday trading, this is the single biggest adjustment. All the details are in the guide to Sunday grocery shopping in Switzerland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Swiss supermarkets run weekend deals?

Migros and Denner run Wochenend-Knaller from Thursday to Sunday, Coop has its Weekend Hits from Thursday to Sunday, and Lidl runs the Super Wochenende until Sunday. Aldi Suisse has no separate weekend label, but its Thursday round covers the weekend. Rappn shows all current offers live.

When do the Denner Wochenend-Knaller start?

Since 5 February 2026 the Denner Wochenend-Knaller run from Thursday to Sunday, four days instead of two. They previously applied only on Friday and Saturday. Denner cites better product availability on weekends as the reason for the extension (source: Denner press release).

Are weekend deals valid on Sunday too?

Formally yes, most weekend formats run until Sunday. In practice nearly all branches are closed on Sundays, and standalone Aldi, Lidl, Denner, Aligro and Otto's stores generally stay shut. You can mostly use the Sunday validity at train station and airport branches of Migros and Coop.

What is most often discounted on weekends?

Experience shows fresh products dominate: meat, poultry and fish for the weekend dinner or the grill, plus fruit and vegetables. No chain guarantees a fixed pattern though, which is why comparing across all chains, for example by price per kilo in Rappn, pays off.

How late can I shop on Saturday in Switzerland?

Most supermarkets close between 16:00 and 18:00 on Saturdays depending on the location, bigger city-centre branches often until 20:00, and small village shops sometimes earlier. Since Sunday is largely closed, Saturday afternoon is effectively the weekend's last full shopping window.

Does Lidl have its own weekend format?

Yes, Lidl bundles its weekend discounts under the name Super Wochenende. The rounds run until Sunday, and the start day varies between Thursday and Friday depending on the week (per lidl.ch). You can see the currently valid Lidl offers live in Rappn.
