Weekly Groceries Under CHF 100 for 2 People: The 7-Day Plan

CHF 100 a week for two is roughly CHF 433 a month, about a fifth below the lowest couple benchmark from Budgetberatung Schweiz (CHF 550 to CHF 700, version 2025/2026). This page gives you the structure — one breakfast, two batch-cooked lunches, four dinners, a staple list by aisle — and no invented basket total.

Weekly meal plan with a shopping list and staple ingredients for two people on a kitchen table

A weekly grocery shop under CHF 100 for two people works out at roughly CHF 433 a month — that is our own conversion, using 4.33 weeks per month. For comparison: the Swiss budget-advice federation Budgetberatung Schweiz allows CHF 550 to CHF 700 a month for food and non-alcoholic drinks in its «budget examples for couples» (version 2025/2026), depending on income level, and the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reports CHF 638 a month for the same line across all household types in its household budget survey HABE 2023. CHF 100 a week therefore sits about a fifth below the lowest published couple benchmark. You get there through the structure of the week — one repeated breakfast, one batch-cooked lunch, four dinners instead of seven — not through bargain hunting.

How much do groceries cost per week for 2 people in Switzerland?

There is no official weekly figure, but there are published monthly benchmarks a week can be derived from. The table puts both side by side so you can see where CHF 100 lands.

Two details matter, or the budget breaks. First, Budgetberatung Schweiz states explicitly in its notes that this line contains no amounts for restaurant meals, for entertaining guests, or for alcoholic drinks. Second, the same document puts body care, laundry and cleaning products in a separate «additional costs» line of CHF 50 to CHF 100 a month. Shampoo and toilet paper are therefore not part of the CHF 100. The FSO splits it the same way: alongside the CHF 638 for food, HABE 2023 shows a further CHF 558 a month for restaurants and accommodation.

The price base is currently quiet, which makes 2025/2026 benchmarks usable: the FSO consumer price index rose by an annual average of 1.1 per cent in 2024 and 0.2 per cent in 2025, after 2.8 per cent in 2022.

The 7-day plan: the underlying pattern

The structure does the work. Cook seven different dinners and you buy seven half-used ingredient sets, then throw part of them away. The pattern that works for two looks like this.

Breakfast: one version for the whole week. Porridge or muesli with milk or yoghurt and one fruit, with bread and eggs on two days. You buy large packs because you know you will finish them.

Lunch: two batch preparations. A big pan of a grain-and-vegetable base on Sunday (rice, bulgur or potatoes plus vegetables), a second one on Wednesday. That covers five weekday lunches, and it is the cheapest available answer to the take-away line, which the official benchmarks count separately anyway.

Dinner: four recipes, not seven. Two built on pulses or eggs, one with meat or fish, one pasta or oven dish. Add two leftovers evenings and one «store-cupboard evening» using whatever is still there.

The list: plan first, then list, then shop. In Rappn the list can be shared between the two of you so you do not both bring home the same chicken — duplicate buying is one of the causes foodwaste.ch names, alongside buying more than you need, buying packs that are too large, and forgetting food in the fridge.

What goes in the trolley? The staple list by aisle

This list deliberately carries no prices. Shelf prices change weekly and by branch; what you get here is the quantity and the thing to check.

AisleFor 7 days for twoWhat to check on the label
Dry goodsRice or bulgur, pasta, oats, lentils or chickpeas, flourPrice per kilo rather than per pack; the large pack is worth it here because nothing spoils
Dairy and eggsMilk, plain yoghurt in a large tub, hard cheese as a block, eggsPlain yoghurt by the kilo instead of single pots; cheese as a block instead of pre-sliced
Fruit and vegetablesStorage vegetables (carrots, onions, potatoes), one cabbage, two salads, fruit for 7 breakfastsRead the price per kilo; ready-prepared and pre-cut cost more per kilo
ProteinOne meat or fish item, otherwise pulses and eggsThe most expensive line of the week — quantity decides this, not the chain
Frozen and store cupboardPeas or spinach, tinned tomatoes, oil, spicesTop up rather than re-buy; only replace store-cupboard items in their promotion week
DrinksTap water, coffee or teaSoft drinks are the quietest line in the budget; work coffee out per kilo

«Which chain» has no honest blanket answer. What the tests show is a ranking across a whole basket, not across yours. In the K-Tipp basket of 28 August 2025, made up of 100 everyday articles with the cheapest item in the shop chosen each time, the total came to CHF 230.94 at Aldi, CHF 232.83 at Lidl, CHF 243.54 at Migros and CHF 250.70 at Coop; Coop was 8.6 per cent above Aldi. The editorial finding was not «switch shops» but that Migros and Coop have brought the prices of their budget lines into line with the discounters.

Which chain for what — and when?

ChainWeekly promotions startBudget lineWhat a dated test showed
MigrosThursday (since 5 February 2026)M-BudgetK-Tipp 14/2025: basket of 100 everyday articles CHF 243.54; budget line aligned with the discounters
CoopThursday (since 5 February 2026)Prix GarantieK-Tipp 14/2025: CHF 250.70, 8.6 per cent above Aldi
DennerThursday (since 5 February 2026)Own brandsNot tested in that basket. Per K-Tipp 20/2025, Denner followed within days when Aldi cut bread prices in October 2025
Aldi SuisseMonday and ThursdayOwn brandsK-Tipp 14/2025: CHF 230.94, the lowest basket in the test. saldo 05/2026: 40 organic items CHF 123.48
Lidl SchweizMonday and ThursdayOwn brandsK-Tipp 14/2025: CHF 232.83. saldo 05/2026: 40 organic items CHF 125.61

For the plan that means Thursday is the day you lock the week down: that is when the new weekly promotions start at Migros, Coop and Denner, and when the second wave lands at Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz. If you buy organic, the gap is wider than on conventional goods: on 18 March 2026 saldo compared 40 identical organic items in Zurich branches and arrived at CHF 123.48 at Aldi, CHF 125.61 at Lidl, CHF 152.38 at Coop and CHF 155.05 at Migros.

And here is the honest part: it depends. Those test figures are dated snapshots of somebody else's basket. Whether your six regular items are cheaper this week at one chain or another depends on what happens to be on promotion — and that changes every Thursday. That is exactly what Rappn is for: it brings over 10,000 live offers from seven chains (Migros, Coop, Aldi Suisse, Lidl, Denner, Aligro, Otto's) into one place, with unit-price comparison per kilo and litre. Rappn does not calculate a basket total for you — it shows you where the individual items on your list stand this week.

Why the plan beats switching shops

The gap between the most and least expensive basket in the K-Tipp test was around 20 francs across 100 articles. That is real, but it is a one-off shift. What recurs every week is the food you never eat. foodwaste.ch writes that catering and households together cause 35 per cent of food waste, and names packs that are too large and food forgotten in the fridge among the household causes. A plan that assigns every pack you buy to a specific day attacks precisely that.

The second lever is the budget line, and it is now well documented. Per K-Tipp of 24 November 2025, Aldi took the price of a 500-gram loaf below one franc in October 2025, and Coop, Denner, Lidl and Migros followed within days; in November Lidl announced lower prices on personal care products, and Migros and Coop adjusted their budget lines accordingly. Switching to the budget line captures much of that movement without changing branch.

So what does this mean for the two of you?

CHF 100 a week for two is demanding, but it is not a fantasy figure: it sits about a fifth below the lowest couple benchmark from Budgetberatung Schweiz. It works if three things hold — a repeated breakfast, batch-cooked lunches, and four dinners instead of seven. If you eat out regularly, count that separately, exactly as the official benchmarks do.

Next step: write out one week's plan, turn it into a shared shopping list, and check on Thursday in Rappn where the ten items on your list stand. Frequently Asked Questions

How much do groceries cost per week for 2 people in Switzerland?

There is no official weekly figure, but there are published monthly benchmarks. Budgetberatung Schweiz allows CHF 550, CHF 600, CHF 650 or CHF 700 a month for food and non-alcoholic drinks in its budget examples for couples (version 2025/2026), depending on income level. The Federal Statistical Office reports CHF 638 a month in the household budget survey HABE 2023, across all household types. Divided by 4.33 weeks that is roughly CHF 127 to CHF 162 a week for a couple — our calculation, not a surveyed figure.

Is CHF 100 a week realistic for two people?

CHF 100 a week works out at about CHF 433 a month, roughly a fifth below the lowest couple benchmark from Budgetberatung Schweiz (CHF 550). It becomes realistic through structure: one breakfast for the whole week, two batch preparations covering five lunches, four dinners instead of seven plus two leftovers evenings. We deliberately publish no guaranteed basket price, because shelf prices change weekly and by branch.

What does not belong in the weekly grocery budget?

Budgetberatung Schweiz states that the «food and non-alcoholic drinks» line contains no amounts for restaurant meals, for entertaining guests, or for alcoholic drinks. Body care, laundry and cleaning products sit in the same document under a separate «additional costs» line of CHF 50 to CHF 100 a month. The FSO splits it the same way: alongside CHF 638 for food, HABE 2023 shows a further CHF 558 a month for restaurants and accommodation.

Which day do weekly promotions start in Switzerland?

Migros, Coop and Denner have started their weekly promotions on Thursday since 5 February 2026. Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz release new offers on Monday and on Thursday. For a weekly plan that makes Thursday the sensible day to lock the list, because all five chains then have current offers on the shelf.

How many recipes do you need for a week for two?

Four dinners are enough if you plan two leftovers evenings and one store-cupboard evening. The reason is not convenience but the shop: seven different dishes means seven half-used ingredient sets. foodwaste.ch names buying more than you need, buying packs that are too large, and forgetting food in the fridge among the household causes of food waste.

Does switching chains or following the plan save more?

Both work, but at different frequencies. In the K-Tipp basket of 28 August 2025 with 100 everyday articles, the gap between the lowest and highest total was around 20 francs (Aldi CHF 230.94, Lidl CHF 232.83, Migros CHF 243.54, Coop CHF 250.70) — a one-off shift. The plan works every week, because it stops what you buy from going uneaten. K-Tipp also found that Migros and Coop have aligned their budget-line prices with the discounters.
