Lugano Market Days and the Weekly Markets of Ticino: Days, Hours and Squares

Lugano market days are Tuesday and Friday, from 7.30 to 14.30, between Via Carducci, Piazza San Rocco and Via Canova: that is what the city's own page for the food and flower market says (lugano.ch). On Saturday the same Quartiere Maghetti streets host the antiques and crafts market, from 8.00 to 17.00. Outside Lugano the calendar changes town by town: Bellinzona on Saturday, Locarno on Thursday in Piazza Grande, Mendrisio on Wednesday at Piazzale alla Valle, Chiasso on Friday along Corso San Gottardo. This guide puts the whole canton in one table with a source on every row, then shows how to pair market day with the supermarket deal cycle, which in Switzerland starts on Thursday.

Which day is market day in Ticino?

It depends on the town: there is no single canton-wide market day. Ticino spreads its markets across the week. If you live in Lugano you get two mornings of food market, in the Mendrisiotto one on Wednesday and one on Friday, and in the Bellinzona area the big one falls on Saturday. The table below collects what the municipalities and the tourism boards publish themselves, with the source next to every row.

Lugano market: food on Tuesday and Friday, antiques on Saturday

The City of Lugano runs two separate markets in the same part of the centre. The first is the food and flower market, on Tuesday and Friday from 7.30 to 14.30, between Via Carducci, Piazza San Rocco and Via Canova. The municipal page describes it as a market of "piccoli coltivatori che vendono direttamente quanto producono", small growers selling directly what they produce: eggs, cheese, salumi, preserves, fruit and vegetables, plus flowers (lugano.ch). Lugano Region, the regional tourism board, lists the same two days and the same hours (luganoregion.com).

The second is the antiques and crafts market: every Saturday from 8.00 to 17.00, in Via Canova, Via Vegezzi and Piazza San Rocco in the Quartiere Maghetti. It is not a grocery market but a market for antique, vintage and handmade pieces. If you come looking for fruit and vegetables in Lugano on a Saturday morning, you have picked the wrong day: the food market is Tuesday and Friday.

Bellinzona market: Saturday is the big one

The Bellinzona market runs every Saturday from 7.30 to 13.00, all year round, in the old town around Piazza Collegiata. Ticino Turismo and Bellinzona e Valli describe it as a market of regional seasonal produce, with valley cheeses, bread and home-made specialities alongside non-food stalls (ticino.ch, bellinzonaevalli.ch).

Alongside the Saturday there is a shorter midweek edition whose dates are reset every year. For 2026 the Bellinzona e Valli page lists Wednesdays from 1 April to 24 June, then 8 July to 26 August in reduced format from 10.00 to 17.00, then 2 September to 28 October, plus the Wednesdays of 2, 9, 16 and 23 December 2026, and the Sundays of 11 and 18 October 2026. Turning up on a Wednesday outside those windows means turning up on a day with no market.

Locarno, Mendrisio, Ascona and Chiasso: the rest of the calendar

In Locarno the market is on Thursday, all year, in Piazza Grande, and from April to October the city adds Wednesday as well (locarno.ch). The same page notes that during the Film Festival window, 29 July to 14 August 2026, the non-food part moves to Largo Zorzi while the food stalls stay at the back of Piazza Grande. The city page publishes no clock times and points to a separate schedule document, so this guide gives none.

In Mendrisio the market is on Wednesday at Piazzale alla Valle, from 9.00 to 14.00 per Ticino Turismo, with locally grown fruit and vegetables, honey, cheese, homemade goods and second-hand clothes (ticino.ch). In Ascona the weekly market is on Tuesday along the lakefront at Piazza G. Motta, running in 2026 from 7 April to 13 October: a seasonal market that can be cancelled in bad weather and that moves to the municipal car park forecourt during JazzAscona (ticino.ch). In Chiasso the market is on Friday from 8.00 to 17.00 along Corso San Gottardo, with food, clothing and handmade goods (ticino.ch).

Other Ticino municipalities hold smaller or seasonal markets. Only markets with a schedule published by a municipality or a tourism board made it into this table. If your village is missing, it almost always means we found nothing published, not that there is no market.

Is the market cheaper than the supermarket?

It depends, and not on one factor. Market prices are set by each stall, they move within the same morning and they are published nowhere. That is why this guide carries no stall price, not even an indicative one. Anyone who gives you a saving percentage without naming the product, the weight, the stall and the date is giving you a number you cannot check.

An honest comparison takes three steps. First, same product and same unit: a kilo of tomatoes against a kilo of tomatoes, not a punnet against a bunch. Second, the same week, because supermarket prices change every Thursday and Rappn shows the current ones. Third, write down the price you paid at the stall with the date and the weight, because that is the only line you can actually prove.

What actually differs between a market stall and a shelf

The most concrete difference is not the price, it is who decides the range. According to the city, the Lugano food market is made of small growers selling directly what they produce, so the offer is whatever has just been harvested, and it changes with the season rather than with a promotion plan. In Bellinzona the tourism pages talk about regional seasonal produce and valley cheeses, in Mendrisio about locally grown fruit and vegetables, honey and homemade goods.

In practice the season decides at the market, while in a supermarket many lines sit on the shelf all year. Pairing market day with deal day: Thursday is the hinge

Swiss supermarket promotions do not start at random. Migros, Coop and Denner start their weekly Aktionen on Thursday: Coop since the week of 21 January 2025, Migros and Denner since 5 February 2026. Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz publish two waves a week, on Monday and on Thursday.

Lay that over the market calendar and the Ticino plan gets simple. On Thursday, Locarno has its market in Piazza Grande at exactly the moment the new deals go live at every major chain: fresh from the stall and new on the shelf land on the same day. In Lugano the same pairing falls on Friday, with the Via Canova market and deals already running since the day before. In Bellinzona it is Saturday, with the deals on their third day of validity.

Before you go: holidays, weather and events move the market

An open-air market is not a shop, it has more reasons to skip a day. Lugano Region explicitly asks visitors to confirm the market on public holidays and when other events are running (luganoregion.com). For Ascona, Ticino Turismo writes that the market may be cancelled in bad weather, and names the fallback location on the municipal car park forecourt for the JazzAscona dates: Tuesday 16, 23 and 30 June and Tuesday 7 July (ticino.ch). In Locarno, as noted, the Festival moves the non-food part to Largo Zorzi.
