How to analyse your grocery spending with AI: what to ask and what not to share
An AI assistant can analyse your grocery spending if you give it a clean table of date, category and amount. Remove personal data first, as the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) advises; the Swiss data protection act in force since 1 September 2023 applies to AI too. Check its totals.

An AI assistant can analyse your grocery spending if you give it a clean table (date, category, amount) without personal data. But it does not reliably know this week’s Swiss promotions, and it can get a total wrong.

What can an AI assistant do with your grocery spending?
A general AI assistant is a chatbot that answers in plain language whatever you type or paste, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini or Le Chat (alphabetical, not a ranking). It adds up your spending by month and category, spots trends, groups similar purchases and turns the figures into a weekly plan.
It needs one row per receipt or item, with amounts in Swiss francs (CHF), ideally as a CSV file. A list typed from memory gives confident but wrong answers. Without AI, read how to analyse your grocery receipts and how to track grocery spending in Switzerland.
Rappn sorts your purchases into categories and shows your spending by month, and you can export your receipts as PDF or CSV.

Which data should you prepare, and what should you remove first?
| Data | Keep or remove | Why (source: FDPIC) |
|---|---|---|
| Date or month, category, amount in CHF | Keep | Enough for totals and trends |
| Generic item name | Keep | Separates food from the rest |
| Name, address, children’s names | Remove | They identify you |
| Card number, IBAN, loyalty number | Remove | Not needed for any sum |
| Store address, exact time | Generalise (“Zurich”, “evening”) | Combined, even data with names removed can point back to you |
| Pharmacy items | Remove | Health data are sensitive personal data |
Check in the settings whether your chats are kept and used to train the model. According to the FDPIC (8 May 2025), the data protection act gives you the right to know. Shopping across the border? Add a “currency” column.
Which 10 prompts help you analyse grocery spending with AI?
Use these grocery budget prompts one at a time: paste the data first, then fill in the square brackets.
- Work out the total for each month and tell me the three categories that grew most.
- We are a couple: Budgetberatung Schweiz sets a guideline of CHF 550 to 700 a month for food and non-alcoholic drinks, depending on net income, excluding restaurants and alcohol (2025/2026). Compare my months. Other households: grocery budget by household size. For the same spending, the FSO measured an average of CHF 638 a month across all households (2.07 people) in 2023.
- Separate food from other purchases and give me each group’s share.
- Which items do I buy almost weekly, and what do I spend on each on average?
- Here are the promotions I want to use: [paste]. Suggest seven dinners for [number] people within a total of CHF [amount]. Method: how to meal plan in Switzerland.
- Sort this shopping list by aisle, in the order I walk through a supermarket: [paste].
- Which products do I buy regularly that I could buy on promotion instead? See alerts when a product goes on promotion.
- Here are the prices I paid for 15 staples a year ago and today: [paste]. Give each item’s percentage change and the average. That is your personal grocery inflation.
- We take turns paying for groceries. Here is who paid what: [paste]. How much does one of us owe the other for an even split? Other rules: how to split grocery costs as a couple.
- Sum up the month in one plain paragraph.
Where AI goes wrong: 5 checks
An assistant sounds sure even when it is wrong, and the FDPIC notes that a chatbot may reproduce incorrect information.
- Wrong totals. Ask for the calculation line by line and compare it with your export.
- Invented promotions. Check promotions you did not paste in yourself against the store’s leaflet or app.
- Out-of-date knowledge. What a model knows stops at a cut-off date, while promotions change every week.
- Generic advice. Ask which line of your data supports the tip.
- Not a financial adviser. For a tight budget or debts, a counselling office helps (see the FAQ).
Your bank’s AI or a general chatbot: what is the difference?
| Where the AI works | What it sees | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant in your bank’s app, if it has one | One line per visit: store and total, not the items | Terms of use, privacy notice, whether you can switch it off |
| General chatbot | Only what you paste or upload | History, training, data removed first |
Only the receipt shows what you bought: your bank’s AI does not see it, and a chatbot sees it only if you paste in your receipts.
How to prepare your data with Rappn
Start today: gather one month of receipts in Rappn, a free Swiss app (iOS and Android) that compares the current promotions of seven Swiss retailers and turns receipts into a spending overview. Photograph a receipt, upload it from your gallery or enter a purchase by hand; the app sorts your purchases into categories and shows your spending by month. Then export your receipts as PDF or CSV and delete the CSV columns you do not need. Rappn covers only groceries: for rent and taxes, use a household budget template.
To analyse several months at once, the free Rappn app imports the receipts of three big Swiss supermarkets’ loyalty programmes, up to 12 months back, and you add the others by photo; it then shows your spending by category and by month. You need a Rappn account and must be an adult; the programmes’ terms still apply and the operator can restrict the link (how linking works).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you analyse grocery receipts with an AI chatbot?
Yes, if you give it the receipts as text or a table with date, category and amount: a general assistant can add up, group and compare months. Remove personal data first, as the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) recommends, and always recheck the totals.
Which data should I never share with an AI?
Never share your name, address, children’s names, payment card numbers, IBAN, loyalty number or pharmacy and drugstore lines. The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) regards health data as sensitive personal data. For grocery spending, date, category and amount are enough.
Does AI know this week’s promotions in Switzerland?
Not reliably: what a model knows stops at a cut-off date, while supermarket promotions change every week. Paste in the promotions you want it to use, and check prices and dates in the store’s leaflet or app before you buy.
Can AI give me financial advice?
A general assistant is not an adviser: it can summarise your data but not assess your financial situation. For a personal budget review, Budgetberatung Schweiz, the Swiss budget counselling association, lists counselling offices by canton on budgetberatung.ch. If repaying a debt will take you more than three months, it points you to a debt counselling office instead.
Can I export my spending from Rappn?
Yes: in Rappn you can export your receipts as PDF or CSV. The CSV file opens in a spreadsheet or can be pasted into an AI assistant; delete the columns you do not need for the calculation first.
