Supermarkets in Ticino: which chains are there and which are missing
Six of the seven chains we compare operate in Ticino: Migros through its own cooperative Migros Ticino, plus Coop, Denner, Aldi Suisse, Lidl Schweiz and Otto's. Aligro is absent, none of its 14 sites is south of the Alps, and no Volg shop shows up in the canton. The Cooperativa Migros Ticino states 33 Migros supermarkets in its Key Facts 2025, and Otto's store finder shows four Ticino stores. Weekly deals start on Thursday, with a second round on Monday at Aldi Suisse and Lidl.

Six of the seven chains we compare operate in Ticino: Migros through its own regional cooperative Migros Ticino, plus Coop, Denner, Aldi Suisse, Lidl Schweiz and Otto's. Of the seven, one is missing: Aligro, which has no site south of the Alps. Outside those seven, Volg, the village shop network, is missing too: no Ticino branch shows up. The bigger difference, though, is not who is there but how the field is organised: the Migros in Chiasso or Biasca is not a Zurich branch, it is a Ticino cooperative with its seat in Sant'Antonino, its own assortment and its own accounts.

Which supermarket chains are in Ticino?
Six out of seven. The table sums up what each chain actually publishes on its own site: a number appears here only if it came from there.
| Chain | In Ticino | What the chain itself publishes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Migros (Cooperativa Migros Ticino) | Yes | 33 Migros supermarkets, 3 restaurants, 6 take away, 3 VOI Migros Partner, 2 outlets | Key Facts CMT 2025, migrosticino.ch, financial year 2025 |
| Coop | Yes | no store count per canton published | report.coop.ch, 2025 annual report, 6 September 2026 |
| Denner | Yes | no store count per canton published | denner.ch, store finder, September 2026 |
| Aldi Suisse | Yes | no store count per canton published | aldi-suisse.ch, September 2026 |
| Lidl Schweiz | Yes | no store count per canton published | lidl.ch, September 2026 |
| Otto's | Yes, 4 stores | Bioggio, Camorino, Grancia, Morbio; over 140 stores nationwide | store finder and "Chi siamo" on ottos.ch, 6 September 2026 |
| Aligro | No | 14 sites, none in Ticino | aligro.ch, 6 September 2026 |
| Volg | None found | around 600 village shops, with no cantonal breakdown | volg.ch, September 2026; tio.ch, 19 January 2017 |
A note on method: Coop, Denner, Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz all run outlets in Ticino, but none of the four publishes a cantonal total. coop.ch does not answer automated requests, and in the 2025 annual report on report.coop.ch, consulted on 6 September 2026, the landing view carries group figures only, with no breakdown per canton. The Denner finder paginates client-side, and the Aldi Suisse and Lidl finders only load in the browser. That is why the column stays empty rather than carrying a second-hand figure. For an exact address, the chain's own finder is the live source.
Migros Ticino: a cooperative that exists only here
Migros Ticino is one of the regional Migros cooperatives and the only one seated south of the Alps, at Via Serrai 1 in Sant'Antonino. According to its Key Facts for financial year 2025, the cooperative runs 33 Migros supermarkets, plus 3 restaurants, 6 take away outlets, 3 VOI Migros Partner shops and 2 outlets, on a combined sales area of over 40'000 square metres. Its territory, migrosticino.ch states on the page consulted on 6 September 2026, covers Ticino and the Moesano in canton Graubünden, and the Key Facts give no breakdown per canton: the 33 are the cooperative's total. Its largest own supermarket is SM S. Antonino at 5'138 m², the smallest SM Tesserete at 319 m². That is the whole range of formats, from a shopping-centre floor in the Bellinzonese to a village-shop size in the Capriasca.
For the same financial year the cooperative counted 103'001 people on its member register and 1'093 staff, 92 per cent of them resident in Ticino, plus 63 apprentices. It recorded 13'650'758 receipts, an average of 45'655 a day, with an average basket of CHF 25.37. Turnover came to CHF 368'436'000 and regional value added to CHF 179'000'000, that is CHF 48.58 for every 100 francs taken. Own brands accounted for 58 per cent of supermarket turnover, and the regional "Nostrani del Ticino" line carried 519 items from 47 producers. The cooperative itself is covered in our guide to Migros Ticino.
Who is missing in Ticino: Aligro, Volg and the chains that stop before the Gotthard
Aligro is the clearest case. The cash and carry lists 14 sites on aligro.ch, consulted on 6 September 2026: Chavannes, Geneva, Matran, Sion, Bern, Brüttisellen, Emmen, Frauenfeld, Gossau SG, Pratteln, Rapperswil-Jona, Sargans, Schlieren and Spreitenbach. None in Ticino. Anyone hunting bulk formats in the canton stays with ordinary retail and local wholesalers.
For Volg the record is less sharp but points the same way. In September 2026 volg.ch speaks of around 600 village shops and publishes no cantonal breakdown. The last public statement we could find on Ticino is from tio.ch, 19 January 2017: of the 941 Volg shops at the time, none was in Ticino, while many were in Graubünden. So we state no current figure. Which chains are absent from Switzerland as a whole, and what replaces them, is covered in supermarkets not in Switzerland.
Otto's in Ticino: four stores, three regions
Otto's is the chain whose cantonal map reads most precisely, because its store finder returns the sites directly. On 6 September 2026 it showed four: Bioggio (6934) and Grancia (6916) in the Luganese, Camorino (6528) in the Bellinzonese and Morbio (6834) in the Mendrisiotto. No branch appears in the Locarnese or the Tre Valli. According to the "Chi siamo" page on ottos.ch, consulted the same day, the company founded in 1978 by Otto Ineichen and seated in Sursee runs over 140 stores of between 150 and 3000 m² nationwide and employs more than 2600 people, across German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino.
When do the weekly deals start in Ticino?
On the same day as in the rest of Switzerland. There is no separate Ticino promotion calendar: the rhythm is national, it is the assortment that is regional.
| Chain | Weekly deals start | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Migros and Migros Ticino | Thursday | moved from Tuesday to Thursday on 5 February 2026 |
| Coop | Thursday to Wednesday | Coop press release via foodaktuell.ch, 21 January 2025 |
| Denner | Thursday | moved from Tuesday to Thursday on 5 February 2026 |
| Aldi Suisse | Monday and Thursday | on 6 September 2026 aldi-suisse.ch showed "Offerte a partire da giovedì, 03.09.2026" and "a partire da lunedì, 31.08.2026" |
| Lidl Schweiz | Monday and Thursday | on 6 September 2026 lidl.ch showed "da giovedì 3.9" and "da lunedì 7.9" |
In practice: on Thursday morning the whole field moves at once, and anyone who missed one chain's deal gets a second round on Monday at the two discounters, in the same week. Because prices change every Thursday, this guide quotes none and shows the current ones in Rappn.
How the network spreads across the regions
For grocery shopping the canton reads as five areas: Mendrisiotto, Luganese, Locarnese, Bellinzonese and Tre Valli. Density follows the population and the A2 motorway, which is exactly why coverage is not the same everywhere. At Otto's, the one chain whose site list is readable as it stands, two of the four stores are in the Luganese, one in the Bellinzonese and one in the Mendrisiotto. At Migros Ticino the same pattern shows at the extremes of its own floors: the largest supermarket in Sant'Antonino in the Bellinzonese, the smallest in Tesserete in the Lugano hinterland.
For the Tre Valli and the side valleys that means less choice per trip. What it does to the price level is covered in grocery prices in Ticino, and the comparison inside the city in grocery shopping in Lugano.
Why the Ticino store map looks different
Because the canton sits in a particular kind of competition. In its 2025 annual report Migros Ticino notes that the reference market grew by 1.9 per cent in Switzerland in 2025 against 1.5 per cent in Ticino, and that Ticino is the region most affected by shopping tourism, backed by two studies published by SUPSI and HSG in the second half of 2025. The cooperative itself recorded a 10.2 per cent drop in turnover in 2025, which it attributes to renovation closures, the exit from the specialist markets, shopping tourism, smaller average baskets and nationally lowered prices. Its supermarkets alone took CHF 321.5 million, 6.1 per cent less than the year before.
The same movement explains what has left the canton: in 2025 Migros Ticino completed its exit from the specialist markets and handed three DIY outlets to OBI and Bauhaus. For 2026 the report announces two new VOI Migros Partner neighbourhood stores. The map is not fixed, then, it moves every year.
What this changes for your shopping
It depends where in the canton you live and which chains sit on your route. An honest answer to "where is it cheaper this week" does not exist as a fixed ranking, only as a comparison of the deals currently running. That is exactly what Rappn does: all the current offers from Migros, Coop, Aldi Suisse, Lidl, Denner, Aligro and Otto's in one list, filtered to your canton, with the unit price next to the pack price, in four languages, with no account and free. Seeing the Ticino chains side by side saves leafing through five separate flyers. The city-level comparison continues in our Lugano price comparison.
