Swiss Beer Brands: Which Chain Stocks What, and What a Litre Costs

With beer in Switzerland the first question is not price but listing: does this chain stock this brand at all? Migros sells no alcohol in its supermarkets, so the country's largest chain drops out of the comparison for Feldschlösschen, Quöllfrisch or Calanda before price is even discussed. At the other chains the same brand family runs between roughly CHF 2.30 and CHF 4.20 per litre depending on pack format, while the discounters' own labels start at CHF 1.33 and CHF 1.58 per litre. This guide maps the brands to their brewing groups and to the chains, and converts every pack to a price per litre.

Who brews which Swiss beer brand?

A large share of the names on the shelf belongs to two houses. Feldschlösschen Getränke AG is part of the Carlsberg group according to its own site, and the brand filter on feldschloesschen.swiss lists Feldschlösschen, Cardinal, Valaisanne, Warteck, Gurten and Hürlimann alongside Carlsberg, Tuborg, Kronenbourg, 1664, Grimbergen, Schneider Weisse and San Miguel. The company describes Feldschlösschen Original as the best-selling lager in Switzerland.

The second house is Heineken Switzerland AG. On heinekenswitzerland.com, Calanda, Eichhof, Haldengut, Ittinger and Ziegelhof sit next to Heineken, Erdinger, Moretti and Desperados. So comparing Calanda with Eichhof, or Moretti with Heineken, means comparing two brands from the same group. That explains no price, but it does explain why those names often turn up in the same promotion week and on the same metre of shelf.

Then there are the independents. Brauerei Locher AG in Appenzell has been brewing since 1886 per appenzellerbier.ch and is family-owned in the fifth generation; its best-known brand is Quöllfrisch. Brauerei Schützengarten AG in St. Gallen presents itself on schuetzengarten.ch as the oldest brewery in Switzerland and has remained independent to this day. In 2025, per the Swiss Brewers Association, 1'091 breweries reported output subject to beer duty.

Which chain stocks which beer brand?

Coop is missing from this table for a mechanical reason, not an editorial one: coop.ch answers automated requests with HTTP 403, and we do not write down an assortment we have not read ourselves. For Aligro no beer assortment page was readable. Both chains are still in the Rappn comparison, with whatever range applies when you look.

What does a litre cost by brand and pack?

Beer is the category where the pack price tells you least: 6 x 50 cl, 10 x 33 cl, 24 x 33 cl and 24 x 50 cl sit on the same shelf. The snapshot below, taken on 5 September 2026, converts every pack to a litre price. For Denner the regular price is used deliberately, not the promotional price of that week.

The table is not a chain ranking. It shows that the same brand in a 24-pack costs roughly half the litre price of a single bottle, and that the spread inside one brand can be wider than the spread between two brands. It is also a single date: beer prices move with the promotion cycle, which starts on Thursday at Migros, Coop and Denner, and additionally on Monday at Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz. What applies today you see in Rappn, instead of opening four online shops one after another.

Why there is no beer at Migros

This is not a seasonal range decision but a clause in the statutes dating from 1928. In June 2022 the cooperative members voted on whether beer and wine could enter the range. Per SRF on 16 June 2022, around 630'000 of 2.3 million members took part, a two-thirds majority was required, and none of the ten regional cooperatives reached it. Migros therefore stays alcohol-free.

For brand searches that has two consequences. First, a Migros promotion on Feldschlösschen or Quöllfrisch cannot exist, so looking for one is a dead end. SRF notes that Migros subsidiaries such as Denner and migrolino do carry a broad alcohol range, so the rule applies to the supermarkets, not to the group.

Quöllfrisch and Schützengarten: the independent lane

Quöllfrisch is the brand Swiss searches tie most tightly to a single chain, and the reason is distribution. On 5 September 2026 Appenzeller Quöllfrisch hell was listed at Denner as a 24-pack of 33 cl bottles at a regular price of CHF 29.30. At the two discounters we did not find the brand in the beer range. Looking for Quöllfrisch therefore means watching a few chains, not the whole market.

Schützengarten follows the same pattern: the Lagerbier hell was at Denner as a 24-pack of 50 cl bottles at a regular price of CHF 43.80. Per litre, both sit above the group brands in the same table, and both belong to houses that answer to nobody but themselves. That is the honest part of the answer to why independent Swiss beer is rarely the lowest litre price on the shelf.

Own labels: where the litre price is lowest

The lowest litre prices in this snapshot carried no brewery name, only a retailer name. Aldi Suisse stocks St. Gotthard and Karlskrone: on 5 September 2026 Karlskrone Lager cost CHF 0.79 for the 0.5-litre bottle, labelled at CHF 1.58 per litre, and St. Gotthard Lager CHF 0.69 for 0.5 litres, labelled at CHF 0.14 per 100 millilitres. At Lidl Schweiz a Schweizer Lagerbier in a 6 x 0.5-litre pack cost CHF 3.99, labelled at CHF 1.33 per litre.

These figures are not a quality verdict and are no substitute for a blind tasting. They are the structural finding: between the cheapest own-label litre and the dearest branded bottle in the same snapshot there is more than a factor of three, and pack format explains a good part of it. Which beer brand is cheapest? It depends on the pack and the chain

The honest answer: it depends on which brand you want, in which pack, and which chain stocks it. The most common reason a beer brand price comparison comes back empty is not a high price but a missing listing. That is why this guide opens with the assortment table rather than the price table.

For scale: per the Swiss Brewers Association, 4'661'624 hectolitres of beer were drunk in Switzerland in 2025, Swiss breweries produced 3'631'516 hectolitres, and 929'482 hectolitres arrived as imports from 94 countries. The association itself groups 43 brewing companies across 51 brewing sites, covering over 97 percent of domestic production. In a market where more than a thousand breweries report output, no single shelf carries everything.
