Chicken Prices in Switzerland: What a Kilo Costs by Cut and by Label

A kilo of chicken in Switzerland does not have one price, it has a range, and that range comes from two things: the cut and the label. On 12 September 2025 at Coop and Migros, budget-line chicken breast was CHF 1.50 per 100 grams and the same quantity with an organic label CHF 5.60, which is CHF 15.00 against CHF 56.00 per kilo (Blick analysis of 17 common meat items). At the other end of the scale sits the thigh: a kilo of plain chicken thighs at Aldi Suisse has cost CHF 5.49 permanently since 2 September 2024, a cut of 35 percent from the previous price (Blick, 1 September 2024). What does a kilo of chicken cost in Switzerland?

Depending on the cut and the label, anywhere from a few francs to well over fifty francs per kilo. The two documented figures come from two independent events. First, the Blick analysis of 12 September 2025, which compared 17 common meat types at Aldi Suisse, Coop, Denner, Lidl Schweiz and Migros with prices collected on a Thursday: budget-line breast cost CHF 1.50 per 100 grams at Coop and Migros, the same quantity organic CHF 5.60. Second, the Aldi Suisse price cut, permanent since Monday 2 September 2024, which reduced unprocessed fresh meat by up to 36 percent: a kilo of plain chicken thighs fell by 35 percent, to CHF 5.49 (Blick, 1 September 2024).

Those two data points show the real structure of the market. The gap between two chains on the same day is usually small: in the Blick survey of 12 September 2025, the top three of the five chains sat within 40 centimes on the whole meat basket. The gap between two cuts and between two labels is large, and it sits in the same shop, often side by side.

Chicken prices by cut: breast, thigh, whole bird

Breast is the most expensive cut, because it is the smallest and most sought-after muscle on the bird. Thighs, drumsticks and whole chickens sit well below it. The problem is not the gap, it is the ticketing: breast is priced per 100 grams, while thighs and whole birds are priced per kilo or per piece. If you only read the big number, you are comparing units, not prices.

The fourth row is deliberately thin: the Aldi Suisse release of 11 November 2025 gives a price for organic chicken breast but not the reference quantity, so only the percentage appears. Swiss chicken, imports, organic and IP-Suisse: what the label does to the price per kilo

At 15.89 kilos per head, poultry is the second most eaten meat in Switzerland, ahead of beef at 10.98 kilos, out of a total supply of 49.86 kilos of retail-ready meat per person (Agricultural Report 2025, 2024 figures). A meaningful share is imported: of the 15 kilos per head, 66.3 percent came from domestic production in 2022 according to Proviande (media release of 23 March 2023). Origin is the first price driver, the label the second.

One caveat: the STS label compass, a service of Swiss Animal Protection STS, ranks animal welfare, not prices. All we take from it is the ordering of the poultry labels, and next to it we put the two documented prices. The Blick analysis notes that organic meat sits 50 to 100 percent above the budget line and sometimes costs more than double; for chicken the two lines were more than a factor of three apart. Private label or brand: where the difference actually sits

For chicken in Switzerland, private label versus brand is mostly the question of which programme tier you are buying. The big chains sell poultry under their own lines, from the budget line to organic, and the gap between those lines is bigger than the gap between two chains on the same day: in the Blick survey of 12 September 2025, on individual items four of the five chains charged exactly the same price. What decides is which line goes into the basket, and whether this week is a promotion week for that cut. Prices in Switzerland change every Thursday, which is why this guide shows them live.

When is chicken on promotion?

On Thursday, and at the discounters on Monday as well. Coop moved its promotion start from Tuesday to Thursday in the week of 21 January 2025 (Coop release via foodaktuell.ch), and Migros and Denner followed on 5 February 2026. Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz run two rounds a week, Monday and Thursday (aldi-suisse.ch, lidl.ch). For poultry, Thursday morning is when the whole field moves at once.

• Promotion share: according to the meat market report of the Federal Office for Agriculture, more than half of fresh meat volume was sold as promotional goods in the July 2020 to June 2021 period, accounting for 47 percent of revenue; poultry exceeded 50 percent (via foodaktuell.ch and BauernZeitung).
• Discount depth: a sample of the Denner weekly promotions from late June 2026 showed meat discounts between 21 and 37 percent (denner.ch).
• Permanent cuts: two are documented and are not weekly promotions, the Aldi Suisse round of 2 September 2024 of up to 36 percent, and the round of 11 November 2025 of up to 30 percent, in which organic chicken breast fell by 26 percent.
• Weekend mechanic: the weekend offers at Migros, Coop and Denner run Thursday to Sunday, and fresh meat is a regular there (corporate.migros.ch, denner.ch).

Why the price per kilo matters and the pack price does not

Chicken is the category where the shelf ticket misleads most, because the same animal sits in the chiller in different units: breast per 100 grams, thigh per kilo, whole bird per piece, strips in trays. This is why the federal rules require, for measurable goods whose price is calculated according to the quantity sold, that the base price per kilogram or litre is shown (kmu.admin.ch, on price labelling). The price per kilo is already on the shelf label, printed smaller than the promotional price.

Then there is the crossed-out price. Since 1 January 2025, a comparison price may only appear next to the price actually payable if the item was offered at that price for at least 30 days beforehand (Art. 16 para. 1 PBV, via kmu.admin.ch). Where is chicken cheapest this week? It depends

It depends on the cut, the label and your canton. One chain can lead on thighs and trail on organic breast in the same week, and ranges differ by region. That is why this guide carries no table of weekly prices: every figure would be wrong by the following Thursday. What it carries instead is the structure, stable for months.
