Swiss Supermarket Deals: Which Chain Starts on Which Day

All three full-range Swiss supermarkets now start their weekly Aktionen on Thursday, but not since the same date. Coop moved from Tuesday to Thursday in the week of 21 January 2025, and Migros and Denner followed on 5 February 2026. Aldi Suisse and Lidl Schweiz run two waves a week, one starting Monday and one starting Thursday. Aligro and Otto’s publish no fixed start day at all. So if you are still searching for deals starting next Tuesday, you are searching for a calendar that no longer exists in that form.

Which supermarket starts its deals on which day?

Thursday is now the shared start day of Migros, Coop and Denner, and Monday is the second start day of the two discounters. What matters is not only the weekday but since when it applies, and that is exactly where old habits and some flyer portals still get it wrong.

The table also answers the question most people are really asking: no, there is no single day on which the whole country gets cheaper at once. There are two moments of movement a week, Monday at the discounters and Thursday at practically everyone.

What changed on 5 February 2026

Migros announced the change on 26 January 2026 in its corporate newsroom: from 5 February 2026 Migros Aktionen start on Thursday and are valid until Wednesday of the following week. The stated reason is that more and more customers come in for their larger shop between Thursday and Saturday. At the same time the Migros magazine, with the Migros week as an insert, is now delivered on Wednesday, one day before the start.

Denner communicated on the same day and switched on 5 February 2026. Its weekly deals have run Thursday to Wednesday since then, having previously run Tuesday to Monday. The Denner flyer is now distributed on Wednesday inside the Migros magazine, where it used to arrive on Monday. According to the same release, the weekend deals grow from two days to four.

Coop was more than a year ahead. Per foodaktuell.ch of 21 January 2025, the chain moved its price promotions from Tuesday to Thursday with validity until Wednesday, pulled its weekend hits forward from Friday to Thursday while still ending on Sunday, added new start-of-week hits, and moved its own newspaper to Thursday. Watson reported the same step on 15 January 2025, noting that the paper shifted from Tuesday to Thursday.

Deals starting next Tuesday: why the old phrasing survives

Because it was correct for years. Until January 2025 the promotion week began on Tuesday at Coop, and until 5 February 2026 at Migros and Denner. If you built your shop around Tuesday for a decade, you keep typing that habit into the search box, and part of the flyer and comparison web never updated its text. The phrasing is not a mistake by the person searching, it is an echo of the old system.

In practice, when you search for deals starting next Tuesday you almost always mean one of two things: the deals that start on the coming Thursday, or the discounter wave that began on Monday and is still valid on Tuesday. You find both by checking the period rather than the weekday. Prices change every Thursday, which is why Rappn shows you today, not a week that has already expired.

What Folgewoche, the following week, actually means

Folgewoche is not marketing language, it is Migros wording: the deals are valid until Wednesday of the following week. Because a promotion week starts on Thursday, it sits across the calendar week. The first four days fall in the current calendar week and the last three in the next one. A deal that started on Thursday is therefore still valid on the Monday after, even though the calendar already shows a new week.

That gives one word two very different search intents. Looking for next week’s deals means either the tail of the current wave, which spills into the new calendar week, or the wave that will start on the coming Thursday. When the flyer, the newspaper and the preview appear

The start day tells you when the price applies. The flyer tells you when you get to see it. Where those two days sit apart is shown in the table above, and that gap is where the planning advantage sits.

Two caveats matter here. First, the Lidl and Aldi rows are dated observations and not a published rule: neither chain states publicly how many days ahead a wave goes up. Second, the earliest look at the new week confirmed by a published source arrives from Migros and Denner in the letterbox on Wednesday. The full channel picture is in Swiss supermarket catalogues.

How to read the validity line

The weekday is the rule of thumb, the period is the truth. A dated example: on 6 September 2026, denner.ch showed two blocks directly under one another, the weekend deals with the period 03.09 to 06.09.2026 and the weekly deals with 03.09 to 09.09.2026. Both started on the same Thursday, but one block ended on Sunday and the other only on Wednesday. Read only the start day and you take them for the same offer.

Three habits work at every chain. First, look for the line carrying the two dates, not the headline. Second, weekend formats are almost always shorter than the weekly deal, and at Coop the weekend hits have run Thursday to Sunday since January 2025 (foodaktuell.ch, 21 January 2025). Third, a note such as while stocks last can shorten the period at any time, especially on the discounters’ non-food items. Aligro and Otto’s: neither publishes a fixed start day. On 6 September 2026 aligro.ch showed the period 7.9 to 12.9, and ottos.ch lists weekly hits and catalogues with no weekday stated. Here you read the period rather than guess the day.

So what does this mean for your shop?

It depends on which chains are near you. If you have Migros, Coop or Denner in town, Thursday morning is the moment when all three switch on their new deals at once. If a discounter is nearby too, Monday gives you a second window and you do not have to wait for Thursday. And if you shop on Tuesday, at the full-range chains you are buying the prices of a week that expires in two days.
