Chain against chain: these guides put two retailers side by side and recalculate the same basket, line by line. They also compare own brands head to head, discounters against full range chains, and ask how wide the gap really is on a realistic week of shopping.

The distance between two chains is not a fixed number, it depends on the week and on the basket. Every guide therefore names its basket, its date and its source instead of handing down a general verdict. Seven Swiss chains are compared, for all 26 cantons, in four languages.
